About and visit notes

For New York residents, a great bakery is more than just a place to buy sweets—it’s a community cornerstone, a repository of tradition, and the essential stop for every major life celebration. In Staten Island, one name has been synonymous with exceptional Italian craftsmanship and quality baked goods for over half a century: Alfonso's Pastry Shoppe. Since its founding in 1970, this establishment has woven itself into the fabric of the borough, carrying forward the rich culinary heritage of its founder, Alfonso Campitiello.

Alfonso’s journey began in Italy, where he honed his skills working alongside regional chefs. This dedication to perfection continued when he arrived in America, leading him to prestigious roles such as baking at the renowned Plaza Hotel and serving as the pastry chef for The Hampshire House. This high-level experience laid the foundation for the bakery's unwavering commitment to quality. The original shop opened on Manor Road in 1970, later moving to Victory Boulevard in 1978, and has since expanded to a second location on Amboy Road, ensuring that this cherished legacy is accessible to more Staten Islanders and visitors alike.

Today, Alfonso's is proudly run by the next generation, preserving the old-world techniques and traditions while embracing the latest cake trends. Stepping into Alfonso's Pastry Shoppe on Amboy Road is to immerse yourself in a world of sweet, authentic Italian flavors. Whether you're picking up a loaf of fresh bread for Sunday dinner, grabbing a quick, decadent treat, or commissioning a show-stopping custom cake, the shoppe offers a delightful experience built on tradition, warmth, and exceptional taste.

The bakery is famous throughout New York for its vast selection, covering everything from classic Italian biscuits to sophisticated layer cakes. Locals repeatedly turn to Alfonso's for their cannolis—often cited as some of the best in the area—their flaky sfogliatelle, and their vibrant rainbow cookies. The continuous stream of loyal customers is a testament to the quality and consistency that this family-owned business strives to maintain, making it a reliable choice for families celebrating milestones like graduations, confirmations, engagements, and birthdays.

This particular location, nestled on Amboy Road, serves the South Shore community of Staten Island with the same dedication to quality that has defined the brand since its inception. While the original Victory Boulevard location holds decades of history, the Amboy Road shop carries the torch forward, ensuring that more New Yorkers have access to their incredible array of fresh, daily-baked goods.

The immense selection is perhaps the most impressive aspect of Alfonso's Pastry Shoppe. The sheer variety ensures that every customer finds their perfect indulgence. From simple, yet perfect, Italian loaves to elaborate, multi-tiered cakes, the offerings reflect a mastery of both Italian and contemporary baking. The commitment to providing fresh products is a core value, driving the team to constantly bake and restock their shelves. While some long-time patrons have noted inconsistencies in product freshness during off-peak hours, the overall consensus remains that for specialty items and celebratory cakes, Alfonso’s delivers a quality product that New Yorkers expect.

It is important for local patrons to remember that a business with such a long history often evolves. Current owner, Anthony Campitiello, continues to honor his father Alfonso’s dream, ensuring that the essence of the Italian bakery tradition lives on. The shop is a place where you can find products specifically catering to various dietary needs, such as gluten-free and sugar-free options, illustrating their commitment to serving the entire community.

When planning your next family gathering, holiday meal, or simple Sunday treat, keep Alfonso’s Pastry Shoppe in mind. Their classic Italian specialties are a taste of history, and their modern cake designs ensure they stay current with today’s demands. It’s a true New York staple, celebrating the sweetest moments of life, one fresh pastry at a time.

The place is a neighborhood staple and I refrained from writing this review for a couple days because the kids that work in there are sweethearts, but I’ve been burned more then once now…for starters it seems like whoever is running the place whether it’s a manager or the owner I couldn’t tell you but regardless he’s a miserable person thankfully, he isn’t in there too often so you don’t have to see that depressed mug or hear him talk to the girls like crap too often & the bulldog walking around like she’s in the iron workers union, like she’s back there building a high rise, calm down you’re baking cookies… sometimes I go in & there’s either one of them walking around And talking like They are doing you a favor serving you there semi stale products at three times the amount they should be charging…. Listen, I have no problem spending good money on goods & services as long as you get what you’re paying for… But these guys definitely push the limits of “fresh” on some of their items & When you’re having guests it’s embarrassing if stuff is beyond a day or two old and lost it’s zest so to speak… anyway, I’ve been biting my tongue for month's. My wife keeps sending me there even though I tell her I hate spending money there but after this past weekend, I’m done, enough is enough. I’ll take the ride to a further bakery At least I know I’m getting fresh stuff from people that appreciate your business and not act like they just did you a solid slinging you some sour cheese cake and gravel topped crumb cake. Respectfully, Get your acts together and stop being complacent…

Has been a part of the neighborhood for years. The products they produce are well made and we never had an issue. The fresh breads are great. We particularly love the Meat Bread.Prices are extremely high (40 dollars for a 2 pound of cookie tray). A 5 pound tray had a price of 98 bucks!!!! INSANE Personally I think bakery prices are way too high recently,The staff are very friendly and helpful.Owner or manager seems very hands on and looking for improvements.
