Introduction / Overview

For Californians with a discerning sweet tooth and an appreciation for world-class, authentic desserts,

Baklavastory.

in San Francisco’s Mission District offers a truly unparalleled experience. This is not your average pastry shop; it is a dedicated artisan bakery that specializes in one thing—traditional Turkish baklava—and executes it with a level of passion and precision that has earned it a stellar reputation. Locals and those familiar with authentic Middle Eastern sweets often describe Baklavastory’s product as being not just the best in the Bay Area, but superior to much of what can be found internationally, even in its country of origin.

What sets Baklavastory apart in the competitive California culinary landscape is an absolute, non-negotiable commitment to freshness. Trays are not made days in advance; they are baked in small batches, guaranteeing that every piece served is incredibly fresh, often still warm, and achieves the coveted 'light as air' texture. This focus contrasts sharply with commercial varieties that can be overly sweet or sticky. The product here is delicate, perfectly balanced, and characterized by a perfect blend of sweetness, crispness, and the rich flavor of high-quality nuts.

The bakery operates not only as a retail destination for individuals but also serves the broader community and corporate sector, offering exquisite dessert options for everything from quick cravings to large-scale events and impressive corporate gifting. It truly embodies the spirit of a specialized, craft food business that prioritizes quality ingredients—such as pistachios sourced directly from Antep, Turkey, and clarified butter made from Turkish milk—to deliver an authentic taste of luxury to the California market.

What is Worth Choosing

When visiting Baklavastory, the primary choice is one of the various tray sizes, each promising the same exceptional quality. The most popular options are centered around the "Princess Cut" baklava, available in different quantities:

  • Princess Cut - Small (12Pcs) - $25.00: This size is perfect for an intimate gathering, a personal treat, or a thoughtful, high-quality sample for a friend. It allows a first-time customer to experience the world-class taste without committing to a large tray.
  • Princess Cut - Medium (35Pcs) - $65.00 or Princess Cut - Large (70pcs) - $95.00: These trays are the ideal choice for corporate events, parties, or large family gatherings. Given the highly promotional nature of the product for gifting, the large trays offer a significant quantity of what many consider the best dessert they’ve ever had, guaranteed to impress guests.
  • Daisy Pie - $65.00 (12 Large Pieces): An excellent alternative to the traditional Princess Cut, this choice offers a different presentation and texture, appealing to those who enjoy a variation on the classic. Although the Princess Cut is the most frequently reviewed item, the Daisy Pie provides a delicious, equally high-quality option.

Regardless of the cut you choose, the key decision is the filling: pistachio or walnut. The Pistachio Baklava is a must-try, as the bakery goes to great lengths to source high-grade nuts from Antep. The bright, rich flavor of these pistachios is a true standout. However, the Walnut Baklava also receives rave reviews for its perfect sweet contrast and crunchy texture. For the ultimate tasting experience, a mixed tray is the recommended choice to fully appreciate the master-level balance of lightness, crunch, and non-sticky sweetness that has Californians calling this bakery an absolute gem. Customers often note that the experience is so satisfying, it "completely ruins my diet," and recommend visitors to "run do not walk to this place."

As a Turk, I’ve tried baklava everywhere I could find it in the US, and this place truly stands out. It's even better than many places back in Turkey. The quality and flavor are exceptional. Everything is freshly made daily, even hourly. I honestly don’t like coming here because it completely ruins my diet. I just hope they never compromise on the freshness and taste. Love that place!!

Run do not walk to this place! When I say this is hands-down, one of the best things I have ever eaten, I mean it this baklava is light as air with the perfect touch of sweetness and crunch from which ever nut you choose, which they had a selection of walnut and pistachio. My friend and I are sitting and devouring the whole tray and I don’t feel guilty about it at all because literally literally this is the best baklava actually, the best dessert I have ever had! The customer service is on another level two I came in and my friend waited outside since she had a big stroller and without me saying anything the man at the front went out and gave her a piece to try as well.Such an inviting little place. Lastly, this is truly so good. I literally called to tell them it made my day. Please support this business and their delicious treats

Absolutely delicious! The baklava from Baklavastory is by far the best I’ve had outside of Turkey. Perfectly flaky layers, just the right amount of sweetness, and a rich, nutty flavor that melts in your mouth. You can tell it’s made with love and tradition. Highly recommend!

As soon as you walk-in, they have a sample of fresh baklava ready for you. Hard to say no to delicious, flakey and most importantly, not too sweet baklava. They sell pistachio or walnut, by the tray only (12 pieces). I actually preferred the walnut, but didn’t have time to wait. Almost ate the whole tray the first day. Without a doubt, the best in SF.

This is the best baklava I have EVER had - great example of doing one thing and doing it PERFECTLY. Beyond the perfection of the pistachio and walnut recipes, Tolgay (the owner) welcomes everyone into his shop with a smile and free samples (aka a full piece of baklava!). He sources the pistachios from Turkey himself and it’s clear that he and his team put so much love and thought into each piece. Worth the trip and wait - don’t walk but run to this place!
