Introduction / Overview

Nestled in the heart of La Grange, Illinois, Balkan Bakery stands out as a true culinary gem, offering local residents an authentic and comprehensive taste of Southeast Europe. This establishment is much more than a typical bakery; it functions as a multi-faceted European specialty store, encompassing a Bakery, Cafe, Convenience store, Dessert shop, Ice cream shop, and Liquor store. It proudly identifies as a women-owned, small business, deeply rooted in family tradition, with recipes—passed down from Kosovo and Serbia—that are honored and evolved under the current ownership. For the Chicago area and surrounding Illinois suburbs, Balkan Bakery has become the go-to destination for high-quality, made-from-scratch Balkan favorites, saving patrons the long trip overseas.

The bakery’s main draw is its commitment to authenticity, starting with the star attraction: Burek. This savory pastry, made with hand-stretched, crispy filo dough and available with classic fillings like ground beef, feta cheese, mushroom, potato, or spinach, is often cited by customers as the "BEST IN AREA" and worth traveling for. Beyond the savory, the display cases dazzle with a rich variety of cakes and sweets, including traditional Balkan delights like Krem Pita (custard puff pastry), Šampita (meringue), Jaffa Cake slices (chocolate and apricot), and the famous Bajadera praline cookies. While one customer noted a negative experience with the freshness of a pre-packed item, the overwhelming majority of reviews, including those citing the "excellent customer service" and "super clean" kitchen, affirm the high standard of daily fresh items and professional management.

The scope of the business ensures that it meets many needs beyond simple baked goods. Patrons can stop in for Breakfast and enjoy a coffee with warm Burek, grab artisan Gelato for an afternoon treat, or explore the European imports section for specialty cheeses, cured meats, and authentic Balkan beverages. This dual identity as both a phenomenal scratch bakery and a dedicated European market makes it an invaluable cultural resource for the diverse communities across Illinois. The friendly, professional atmosphere, coupled with both indoor and outdoor dining spaces, positions Balkan Bakery as a welcoming community hub that encourages both a Quick visit and a leisurely Dine-in experience.

Burek is realy good and daily fresh. I stopped by and bought a lots of items for my family in NW suburbs. But I wanted some sweet treats and bought kremipa, šampita and tulumbe. They looked wonderful and fresh in the display refidgerator, but the lady that worked there quickly pulled out pre-packed clams boxes of items I had ordered, I even agreed to by two of each-instead of one as it was my first intention, because they were packed in pair. I brought them home and wanted to have a sweet treat with coffee with my wife and son. Krempitas were SPOILED and sour!!! We had to throw them right away. Šampita was edible but old and stale with grainy mouthfeel - we tried and tossed it. Tulumba's were also old and stale, very hard when chew instead of airy and fluffy. They should take better care of stock rotation and discard perishable items that are old and stale and spoiled. I always had a high opinion and good experience with Balkan Bakery until now. I hope they won't spoil their reputation by selling spoiled cakes.

I have been wanting to stop at these bakery for a long time and I finally did. My mother and I decided to stop and get something for breakfast. I was extremely surprised when walking in because I thought it was just a bakery. It is more like a small store. It has all sorts of items food, drinks, household items personal items, greeting cards etc. my mother and I ordered the spinach and feta burek and I the mushroom burek. I'm not sure how this item is supposed to be since this is the first time I have had one but it I enjoyed it and so did my Mom. I also bought a slice of the orange and chocolate cake. This too was yummy! We will definitely go back and try a coffee and another dessert. I think the burek will be something I can buy and have for my lunch. The lady greeted us and was very helpful explaining the different flavors of items. Overall, I'm glad we stopped in and we will definitely go back.

Whenever I’m craving ajvar, planning to make ćevapi for dinner, or just need a quick bite—this place is my go to. The shelves are always stocked, and the bakery counter never misses. Everything tastes just like how my grandma made it back 🏡 home.
