About and visit notes

Hello, fellow Mainers! If you're on a quest for truly exceptional bagels and a breakfast experience that will "send you to Bagel Heaven," then it's time to discover Dutchman's in Brunswick. This isn't just another bagel shop; it's a culinary revelation, bringing a fresh, modern approach to a beloved classic right here in our community. From their uniquely crafted, wood-fired bagels to their inventive sandwich creations and fantastic coffee, Dutchman's has quickly carved out a reputation as a must-visit spot. For those of us who appreciate quality, flavor, and a vibrant local business, Dutchman's offers an experience that goes beyond the ordinary. This article will guide you through what makes Dutchman's a standout, exploring its delectable offerings, its intriguing location, and the passionate team behind its growing success. Get ready to learn why this Brunswick gem is becoming a favorite for locals and visitors driving through our beautiful state.

Dutchman's has quickly emerged as a game-changer in the Maine bagel scene, particularly for those of us north of Portland. While many traditional bagel places in the region might offer "just ok" bagels and less-than-stellar coffee, Dutchman's is described as "thoroughly modern" and a refreshing departure. This isn't a place content with mediocrity; instead, it focuses on elevating the bagel experience through innovative flavors and high-quality ingredients. Owners Jeremy and Marina Kratzer have poured their expertise and passion into creating a product that is consistently praised for its deliciousness. As one ecstatic customer raved, comparing their experience to "Bagel Heaven," Dutchman's delivers on its promise of exceptional taste.

What sets Dutchman's apart is their unique approach to bagel making. They specialize in wood-fired bagels that are hand-shaped and honey-boiled, offering a distinctive texture and flavor profile that stands out. Jeremy Kratzer, a "bagel journeyman" with experience from notable bagel spots like The Purple House in Yarmouth and Rose Foods in Portland, has developed a style that is "not quite Montreal, and it's not quite New York, it's somewhere in between." This innovative technique, using residual heat from a wood-fired pizza oven (a testament to their resourcefulness in a shared space), results in bagels that are both chewy and airy. This commitment to craft and quality has clearly resonated with the local community, as evidenced by their rapidly growing popularity since starting as a pop-up in late 2022. Dutchman's represents a new standard for bagels in Maine, combining traditional methods with modern flair and an unwavering dedication to deliciousness.

Dutchman's is located at 14 Main St, Brunswick, ME 04011, USA. This address places it within the historic Fort Andross mill building, a significant landmark in downtown Brunswick. While the building itself is quite large, customers note that the bagel shop is located "in the back," and finding the entrance might require "a quick back and forth over the bridge." This adds a touch of discovery to the visit, a small adventure that leads to a delicious reward.

Despite its slightly hidden entrance, the location within Fort Andross offers several advantages. The physical space is described as "huge with plenty of seating and views into the interior courtyard," providing a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for diners. This ample seating is a welcome change from smaller, often cramped coffee and bagel shops. Furthermore, being on Main Street in Brunswick makes it a convenient stop for locals going about their day, as well as an excellent option for travelers "driving north or south" through Maine, offering a high-quality break from typical roadside fare. The combination of a unique, spacious interior and its strategic location within a historic complex makes Dutchman's accessible and appealing for a diverse range of customers seeking a superior bagel experience. Their consistent operating hours, generally Wednesday through Sunday from 8 AM to 1 PM, provide reliable windows for locals to plan their visits.

Dutchman's boasts several remarkable features and highlights that collectively contribute to its burgeoning reputation and appeal among Mainers.

  • Authentic Wood-Fired Bagels: This is a core differentiator. The hand-shaped, honey-boiled, and wood-fired baking process (using residual heat from a pizza oven) results in a unique texture and flavor that customers rave about, setting them apart from other bagel shops in the region. This method imparts a distinctive "crispy and chewy" quality.
  • Innovative and Delicious Menu: Beyond classic bagels, their creative bagel sandwich combinations, such as the "mind-blowing" Dutch Royal and the "delicious" Egg & Cheese #3, are frequently highlighted. Their varied cream cheese flavors also add to the appeal.
  • High-Quality Coffee Program: Unlike many traditional bagel shops where coffee is an afterthought, Dutchman's features an "espresso bar" with "really tasty" coffee, including Time & Tide drip coffee and a range of espresso-based drinks, appealing to serious coffee lovers.
  • Spacious and Inviting Atmosphere: Located in the "huge mill building" of Fort Andross, the shop offers "plenty of seating and views into the interior courtyard," creating a comfortable and modern dining environment that encourages lingering.
  • Passionate and Talented Owners (Jeremy & Marina Kratzer): Customers consistently praise the owners for their skill and dedication, with comments like "Jeremy & Marina KNOW HOW TO MAKE THE BEST BAGELS IN OUR WORLD." Jeremy's background in both Montreal and New York bagel making contributes to their unique "in-between" style.
  • Exceptional Customer Experience: The review from "Chefs Perry & Diane" exemplifies the highly positive customer interactions, highlighting their repeated visits and enthusiastic endorsements, emphasizing the overall enjoyment of the food and service.
  • Local Recognition and Rapid Growth: Starting as a popular pop-up in late 2022, Dutchman's quickly established a loyal following, demonstrating strong community support and a clear demand for their product, cementing its status as "Brunswick, Maine's hottest new bagel shop."
  • Sustainable Practices: Jeremy Kratzer quietly incorporates sustainable practices by using leftover heat from the wood-fired oven for baking, rather than lighting a new fire each week, showing a thoughtful approach to their operations.

Dutchman's is an absolutely perfect fit for locals in Maine, particularly those in the Brunswick area and traveling through the region, for several compelling reasons that resonate with our local tastes and preferences. Firstly, it fills a notable gap in the local bagel landscape. As one customer aptly pointed out, many existing bagel options north of Portland offer "just ok" bagels and "terrible" coffee. Dutchman's, with its "thoroughly modern" approach, wood-fired bagels, and "really tasty" espresso bar, directly addresses this need for high-quality, authentic bagel experiences. For Mainers who appreciate a truly well-made bagel – one that perfectly balances chewiness and airiness – Dutchman's is a game-changer, providing a superior alternative to mass-produced varieties.

Secondly, the creativity and quality of their menu offerings make it a compelling choice for regular visits. Whether you're craving a classic toasted Everything bagel with veggie cream cheese or a substantial breakfast like the "mind-blowing" Dutch Royal sandwich, there's something to satisfy every palate. This innovative menu keeps things exciting and offers more than just a quick bite; it's a breakfast or lunch experience worth savoring. The rave reviews from locals, declaring it the "Best Breakfast I've ever had," underscore its ability to consistently exceed expectations, turning first-time visitors into loyal patrons planning "Round 3 Next Week!!"

Furthermore, its location within the historic Fort Andross mill building adds a unique layer of charm and convenience. The spacious interior with ample seating provides a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, perfect for meeting friends, catching up on work, or simply enjoying a quiet moment with a delicious bagel and coffee. While initially a "hidden" gem, its proximity to main roads in Brunswick makes it highly accessible for both daily commuters and those on weekend drives through Maine. This combination of a welcoming environment and easy access makes it a practical and enjoyable destination for the community.

Finally, supporting Dutchman's means investing in a local business driven by passion and craftsmanship. Owners Jeremy and Marina are dedicated to their craft, evident in their unique wood-fired baking method and commitment to quality ingredients. Their quick growth from a pop-up to a beloved staple demonstrates strong community endorsement and the positive impact local businesses have on the character and economy of our towns. For these reasons—its superior product, innovative menu, inviting atmosphere, and strong local roots—Dutchman's is not just a place to grab a bagel; it's a vital and cherished part of the Brunswick community, offering an exceptional experience that truly makes it "the best bagels in our world."

Most if not all of the bagel options North of Portland are trad bagel places: been around forever, lots of flavored coffee, bagels are just ok, coffee is terrible. Dutchman, on the other hand is throughly modern: interesting bagel flavors, espresso bar, good 🥯 sandwiches. Its located in the huge mill building, but in the back, finding the entrance required a quick back and forth over the bridge. The physical space is huge with plenty of seating and views into the interior court yard. Bagel sandwich was delicious and ☕️ was really tasty. Great option if you are driving north or south.

We ordered several platters (which came with assorted bagels and a selection of awesome cream cheese flavors) for our wedding weekend. I don't have pictures of this amazing spread because it was devoured by our families and wedding party. These bagels were incredible; we will definitely be getting Dutchman's bagels whenever we are back in Brunswick!

Dutchman's Wood-Fired Bagels in Brunswick is the place to go if you’re looking for a bagel. Located in the annex of the Nomad Pizzeria it shares the same charm and wood-fired oven.A year later, our second visit was as good as the first, maintaining the top-notch quality we remembered. We had two bagels:- The Garden State on an everything bagel with dill cream cheese and lox- A Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a poppy seed bagel.Key points:- Both bagels were incredible, flawless even.- The Garden State had perfectly ripe heirloom tomatoes.- The Bodega sauce on the B/E/C really took the sandwich up a notch. *bam*- Perfectly toasted and just soft enough on the inside.- Don’t forget to check out their bagel special of the dayThey also offer coffee and espresso drinks.Finding a decent bagel place is always tougher than you'd expect. But Dutchman's has nailed it and continues to do a fantastic job. This place should definitely be on your list. Visit once, and I bet you'll go back again next time you're in town.

Absolutely incredible experience at Dutchman’s! I ordered the lox bagel on an everything bagel—perfectly toasted—with cream cheese, capers, and onions, and it was out of this world. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. The service was just as outstanding—Emily Squared (yes, two awesome Emilys!) made my morning with their warmth and hospitality. They pointed me to Marina, who is the heart and soul of this place. Her passion for Dutchman’s shines through in every detail, and you can genuinely feel how much she cares about her team, her customers, and the entire experience. As the owner of Morning Moose Coffee, I know what it takes to create a space where people feel valued and welcomed—and Dutchman’s absolutely delivers. If you’re in the area, don’t miss this spot. The food is amazing, the people are even better, and you’ll leave feeling like family. This place TOTALLY made my morning! My second time here and CERTAINLY won’t be my last.
