About and visit notes

Welcome to the heart of Methuen, Massachusetts, where a local culinary institution has been delighting taste buds for decades: George's Bakery. This isn't just another bakery; it's a vibrant hub for authentic Lebanese and Middle Eastern flavors, offering everything from freshly baked pita bread to savory prepared foods and a fascinating array of international ingredients. For those in Massachusetts seeking a truly unique and delicious experience, George's Bakery stands out as a must-visit destination.

George's Bakery began its remarkable journey in the early 1920s when George Cherabie, a young man who emigrated from Lebanon, set out to introduce the rich flavors of his homeland to American palates. He started by hand-making small batches of bread, baking them in intensely heated ovens. During the Great Depression, he even delivered bread to families who couldn't afford to pay, earning immense respect in the community. The legacy continued through generations, with his nephew George Cherabie, and later his daughter Georgette and son-in-law Emile Maroun, expanding the offerings to include imported groceries, olives, cheeses, grains, nuts, seeds, and more baked products. In 1998, George's Bakery, alongside their tahini manufacturing plant (Sunshine International Foods), moved to their current, larger location in Methuen. Today, George, Emile Jr., and Jennifer Maroun, the fourth generation of the family, continue to uphold the tradition, offering a vast selection of Mediterranean and Middle Eastern foods that evoke cherished memories and inspire new culinary adventures. Their commitment to fresh, high-quality products and authentic flavor profiles has made them a beloved staple in the Massachusetts community.

A college friend from the area told me that this place is the ONLY place to get fresh pita bread. It’s not a fancy place but has a nice offering of Lebanese and other middle eastern ingredients and food. Know that the medium for the pita bread is the size of a small pizza (!) I purchased 2 wheat and 2 white pita as well as their spinach pies. My whole order was $30 (!) I plan to freeze most of it to enjoy this fall. Last, the staff who work there are super friendly and helpful, which I really appreciated.

In addition to a reasonably priced wide assortments of Lebanese products including fresh pastries, homemade food, bread and wine, they also have lunch sandwiches. I got the Fresh Kibbee Wrap and the Chicken Shawarma Wrap. $12.95 each. Absolutely delish!

So glad I found this place. I have been dying for good pita and theirs are fantastic. Fatayer like my teta used to make, and great prices on lentils, zaatar, and other hard to find ingredients. It’s a bit of a drive for me to get here, but worth it every time.

We grew up with this bakery originally on Hampshire St, and are so happy they are still around and in their larger grocery store. A wide variety to choose from.Their bread is the best. We literally take our periodic fieldtrips down to shop, for our home, family parties, or to share. The staff is so kind.Stop by and enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

Great spot for Mediterranean pantry items, baked goods, and prepared foods. Grab some meat pies and a bunch of salads and you've got lunches for a week. Plus the sweets... I highly suggest getting a mixed dessert box. Save at least one sweet to have with the next day's breakfast.
