About and visit notes

Welcome, Virginia residents, to an in-depth exploration of a truly unique and cherished local business: Gustave Boulangerie & Brasserie. Located in the heart of the beloved Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, this establishment is far more than just a typical bakery. It is a dual-concept venue, masterfully combining the exquisite artistry of a traditional French Bakery—or boulangerie and pâtisserie—with the relaxed, communal atmosphere of a Beer garden and brasserie. This blend creates an authentic Parisian experience right here on Mt Vernon Ave, providing a crucial and delightful hub for the local community.

The core identity of Gustave is built around impeccable quality and French culinary tradition. As one customer aptly noted, it feels "Literally a bakery from France transplanted into the United States," where the fresh baked items are "exactly what you would get if you were sitting at a café in Paris." The menu is a testament to this authenticity, featuring an encyclopedic selection of French favorites. Under the Viennoiseries category, you’ll find classics like the buttery Croissant Beurre, the sweet Pain Aux Raisins, and unique items such as the Cronut and various savory options like the Ham And Cheese Croissant and Leek Feuillete. Their Patisserie section is equally impressive, offering gorgeous desserts like Eclair Chocolat, Tartelette Citron, and the multi-layered Millefeuille Vanille.

However, Gustave is not just about sweets. The Baguetterie offers staple breads like the classic Baguette and Sourdough Loaf, while the Sandwicherie/Saladerie provides satisfying lunch options such as Jambon Beurre Parisien, Tuna Nicois, and a variety of delicious croissant sandwiches. Furthermore, their extensive offerings range from a full Breakfast menu featuring Croissant Madame and Shakshuka Traditional, to a delightful Apero (appetizer) menu with items like Charcuterie Plate and Bavarian Pretzel, perfectly complementing their Beer garden side. This comprehensive and high-quality menu ensures that Gustave Boulangerie & Brasserie can serve the community from the first morning coffee to a relaxing evening gathering, making it a true all-day destination.

The location of Gustave Boulangerie & Brasserie is a central part of its charm and appeal to Virginia residents. Lots of options to choose. Very good sandwiches (sad I never took any picture), good quality bread and fresh ingredients. Pastries are delicious. I also appreciate that they offer many mini versions to choose. Coffee is very average compared to St Elmo’s across the street. Seats may be hard to find for dine-in on weekends, but there are plenty of places to sit outside in this area.

One of the authentic French Bakeries in the area that provide quality products. Service was great, but they were definitely busy on a Sunday mid-morning. Waiting line blends in with the ordering line and the space can get tight in there. Bring patience. Unless you have a large party or have kids, inside seating area or out front are probably the best option for you. Sandbox and outdoor spaces can get really crowded with kids and parents on playdates. 🤗Fair prices for the area, especially if you value fresh products with better ingredients not the flash frozen stuff served by competitors.

Bonjour! Of all the breakfast options in and around Del Ray/Old Town, our regulars are Gustave's, Junction, and Tatte's (with the ol' Grape & Bean in Rosemont an honorable mention). Gustave's is basically a smaller scaled version of Tatte's: great pastries, coffees, and fussy Mediterranean plates (in a good way... a step up from diner fare), albeit with a smaller footprint and slightly fewer options. Still, the miniaturization affords faster service and smaller crowds (at least between 7 and 8:30 AM), and the space is every bit as bright, cheery, and inviting.Junction has the heartier diner-y Mexicali offerings and Vietnamese coffee (and cream-filled cruffins!), but it's more of a Fall-Winter-rainy day cavern. Tatte's is upscale, clean, and clinical. Gustave's is an all olive oil, orange-lemony Spring and Summer hangout, with a biergarten built for neighborhood hangouts with pets. (The biergarten by Matt & Tony's -- a local place ideal for networking lunches or surprise-impressing out-of-town family dinners, especially if they might like to try something from the bar -- is likewise popular, albeit with less of a picnic vibe.)[Posted at the request of a member of the staff... I mean, if you're just hanging out, occupying table space, leaving a review is the least you can do, right?]

Gustave's accommodated our memorial service for a departed loved one in the outdoor pavilion. It was an emotional event but everyone was attentive, kind and professional. The food was fantastic! Every item I tried off this smorgasbord we ordered was delicious. Excellent coffee, delicious and creative non-alcoholic juice sparklers, and plenty of options for the drinkers. The quiche was delicious, excellent cheese selection, beautiful and delicious pastries. Only complaint was somehow the salad ended up too salty, obviously a mistake because everything was perfectly seasoned. Therefore I still gave it five stars for food because they went over and above on everything else.We talked to the owner afterwards and he was pleasant, friendly and passionate about what they are doing, and he talked about all the great events they have coming up. Goats?! Yes, please!! Over the next few days we observed them full and bustling with kids and families, adults enjoying themselves, even some kind of petting zoo event with bunnies! Wish we had gotten to go more on my brief trip, Gustave's really looks like a social hub for the area!
