Introduction / Overview

Maryland’s vibrant culinary landscape is enriched by establishments that seamlessly blend artistry, tradition, and heart. Praline Bakery & Bistro, located in the heart of Bethesda, stands out as one such destination—a dual-concept venue that functions as both an elegant French bakery and a refined, yet welcoming, European-style bistro. For those seeking an authentic taste of France right here in Montgomery County, Praline is an indispensable local jewel.

The co-owners, Susan and Patrick, bring a distinguished pedigree to every plate and pastry. Having worked together as pastry chefs at the White House since 2000, their commitment to scratch-made excellence using only the finest ingredients is the foundation of their success. This level of expertise ensures that whether you’re indulging in a buttery croissant, a meticulously crafted macaron, or a multi-tiered wedding cake, the quality is truly exceptional.

Praline’s experience is two-fold. The ground floor captivates patrons with a stunning display of pastries, breads, and colorful sweet treats—a visual feast reminiscent of a Parisian patisserie. The second floor, however, is home to a spacious, inviting bistro. As noted by loyal customers, this space offers a hidden culinary oasis, featuring a distinctly French menu that includes traditional favorites like Onion Soup Gratinée and Escargots, alongside heartier dishes such as Cast Iron Seared Prime New-York steak and Pan Seared Salmon.

Open for Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Praline caters to every need, from a Quick visit to pick up fresh bread to a relaxed, multi-course evening meal. The entire operation maintains a friendly, attentive atmosphere, making it a favorite spot for dates, family gatherings, or simply treating oneself to a great dessert in the Bethesda area.

What is Worth Choosing

Praline Bakery & Bistro is unquestionably worth choosing for Maryland residents who value authentic culinary excellence, convenience, and a high-quality dining experience. The main reason to frequent Praline is the rare combination of an elite-tier bakery and a dedicated, traditional French bistro under one roof. The co-owners' background as former White House pastry chefs is not just a marketing point—it’s a direct reflection of the meticulous care and superior ingredients found in every item, from the flakiest croissant to the most complex layer cake. This guarantees a culinary experience that rises above typical local fare.

For special occasions, the fact that Praline specializes as a Wedding bakery is a powerful endorsement of their ability to handle custom, high-stakes orders with artistry and reliability. Whether planning a wedding, graduation, or a large birthday party, their expertise ensures a memorable, scratch-made centerpiece.

For everyday dining, the bistro’s ability to execute a diverse menu, from a delicious morning omelette or 'Eggs Your Way' to a perfectly cooked dinner entree like the Cast Iron Seared Prime New-York steak, makes it a reliable choice for any time of day. The positive customer reviews, which highlight the "delectable" food, the accommodating staff who successfully served a large group, and the pleasure of dining on the open-air patio, all reinforce Praline’s reputation as an authentic, high-value establishment. The added convenience of free and accessible parking in a prime Bethesda location seals the deal, removing a common frustration associated with urban dining. Praline is more than a place to eat; it’s a delightful, intimate escape to a Parisian culinary haven right here in Maryland.

At first glance, Praline Bakery & Bistro, located in The Shops at Sumner Place in Bethesda, may look like just another storefront. But stepping inside reveals a hidden gem that beautifully blends French charm with warm, neighborhood hospitality. On the first floor, you’ll find an elegant bakery filled with colorful macarons, beautifully crafted tarts, éclairs, buttery croissants, fresh breads, and other pastries that could easily belong in a Parisian patisserie. The staff are welcoming and attentive, making the experience feel both personal and refined. The real surprise awaits upstairs, where the bistro offers a spacious, inviting atmosphere perfect for a date, family lunch, or a relaxed gathering with friends. The menu is distinctly French, featuring traditional dishes such as French Onion Soup, Escargots, Steak Frites, Poulet Grand-Mère, Salmon Paillard, and savory buckwheat crêpes, all carefully prepared and elegantly plated. Even the desserts—like Crème Brûlée and Tarte Tatin—stay true to their French roots. While there are a few contemporary additions like the Praline Burger, everything is crafted with a French culinary approach that keeps the menu cohesive. In addition to the cozy indoor dining area, the second floor features an open-air terrace with tables and umbrellas—perfect for enjoying fresh air in a more relaxed setting. Personally, I would suggest adding a few plants for increased privacy between tables, but overall, the space is lovely and well thought out.One of the key advantages of this location is the free parking available on-site, a major plus in the Bethesda area. Whether you're planning a full meal or just stopping by to pick up pastries, it makes the visit even more convenient. In short, discovering Praline Bakery & Bistro was a delightful and memorable experience. What looks like a simple shop from the outside reveals a true culinary oasis inside, rich in flavor, tradition, and heart. Don’t hesitate to visit, especially if you’re craving a little taste of France right here in Maryland.

Our group enjoyed a delicious lunch on their patio on a glorious day in late May. The place had the staff to seat and serve a group of nearly twenty, and to provide excellent service throughout. My mushroom, spinach and cheese omelette was delectable with a good size spring mix salad accompaniment. Others enjoyed their Nicoise and Praline salads, the baked salmon with ratatouille, and their Lorraine and veggie quiches.

Terrible place!! Stay away!!This is a popular spot among locals but it’s aged and service sucks. The Bistro upstairs might be better but it’s full service and doesn’t open until 11am. Until then, you’re left with weak coffee, fridge cold & not fully baked quiches, mediocre pastries and hopeless staff. Don’t expect to get a plate (even a paper one) for your “breakfast” or even a cup of water after you shell out almost ten bucks for a crappy “quiche” that’s inedible as is. If this is meant to go, why have seating?! Confusing! I’ll not be going back! Ever!

Absolutely love this local gem. Brought a number of friends who had never been there, to eat outside on the patio on a lovely night - everyone was very impressed with the service and quality of food. They said 'What a find!' Shout out to our delightful server Stephanie, who was so polite, patient and just charming. We all will be back !PS - and you will not find a better pastry anywhere !

The food was good but they said they didn’t have water for paying customers, only bottles for purchase. Then after a while someone begrudgingly brought water for our toddler but not for the rest of us. The heat index outside was over 100 degrees. Very strange. We didn’t just walk in and ask for water, we ordered and paid for our food order. Either they’re desperate for the additional $3 per bottle, were trying to get a bigger tip, or just lacked basic customer service skills. They’re only getting 4 stars because we used to be regulars and this was atypical a few years ago, otherwise it would be 2 or 3 stars.
