About and visit notes

If you live in the Upstate of South Carolina, or are just passing through the vibrant city of Greenville, a stop at Rise Bakery is quickly becoming a local ritual. More than just a place to grab a morning pastry, Rise Bakery represents a passionate dedication to the age-old craft of artisan baking, combined with a modern commitment to community and local sourcing.

Located in the heart of the burgeoning Village of West Greenville arts district, Rise Bakery has transformed a hobby born during a global pause into a beloved neighborhood institution. They specialize in naturally leavened bread—often referred to as sourdough—and old-world, European-style pastries, all made 100% from scratch. This focus on traditional techniques and high-quality, locally-sourced ingredients is what sets this bakery apart and has earned it a fiercely loyal following among South Carolina residents seeking authenticity and flavor.

The story of Rise Bakery began during the COVID-19 lockdowns when founder Julian Loue, seeking a new pursuit, took up baking. What started as sharing loaves with neighbors quickly grew into a micro-bakery operating out of his garage. The demand was so strong—with loyal customers lining up outside his home—that the hobby blossomed into a full-fledged business. After a successful run at the Travelers Rest Farmers Market, the natural next step was a brick-and-mortar storefront, which opened in March 2022 in the Village of West Greenville. This journey from cottage bakery to community staple highlights the grassroots, quality-driven foundation of the business.

For locals in Greenville and the surrounding Upstate, Rise Bakery is a true destination. The moment you walk through the door, you’re greeted by the unmistakable aroma of fermenting dough and fresh butter—a sensory experience that immediately signals a commitment to quality. Whether you’re stopping in for a quick breakfast, picking up a loaf for a family dinner, or simply looking for a quality cup of coffee, the friendly and professional atmosphere ensures a welcoming experience for all members of the community.

I picked up 2 loaves of the Bacon, Parmesan bread as gifts at the Travelers Rest Farmers Market. It looked great but I didn’t get to try it. The folks who got the bread could not stop talking about how good it was. So…..the next Saturday, I went back specifically for the same bread and picked up two more loaves. This time, I enjoyed it for breakfast with garden ripe tomatoes and sunny side up eggs. Now I know what the fuss was all about! Simply a delicious, hearty bread, made with love and purpose.Thank you Rise Bakery.I’ll be back!Kevin McGraw

On a spur of the moment venture into the villages to get pottery next door, we stopped in at Rise Bakery. My wife was super excited to get amazing artisan bread at very reasonable prices. The vibe is laid back and welcoming. I’m eager to come back in a morning sometime and see things at their peak.

I love rise. it’s a quick spot to grab a delicious baked treat and a great coffee. it’s a quick in and out experience but the whole time spent inside is welcoming and bright. I live in the area and come here from time to time, typically it’s a causal experience. Today I was served by Kayla, she was amazing help and showed genuine human kindness. Thank you Kayla, ps the caramel is amazing! Just thought she deserved a shout out for making my late morning go very smoothly.

I love RISE. they’re artisanal pastries and fresh baked bread is so good. And they have Challah bread on Fridays which you can’t really find (authentic) in the area. Owner and staff are super nice and friendly. I usually get coffee nearby at Reunion or Village Grind and always make it a priority to stop in here cause I know there’s always something I’ll enjoy! Good vibes all around and food is delicious!!
