About and visit notes

For many New Yorkers, a bagel is more than just breakfast—it's an essential part of the local culture and a subject of serious debate. In Westchester County, the conversation about where to find the best bagels often includes a mention of Scarsdale Bagels. This unassuming shop on Garth Road has garnered a dedicated following for its unique take on the classic New York staple. It stands out in a crowded market by focusing on a specific, traditional style that appeals to purists and those who appreciate the craft of bagel making. The experience at Scarsdale Bagels is defined by its simplicity and its commitment to a particular kind of bagel, one that is celebrated by its loyal customer base.

The essence of Scarsdale Bagels is captured in a customer's review who declared them to be "the best bagels in Westchester." This level of loyalty is born from a deep appreciation for the product itself. The bagels are described as "hand made" and "no toasting needed," a testament to their freshness and quality. Unlike many contemporary bagel shops that have expanded their menus to include an array of breakfast sandwiches and hot food, Scarsdale Bagels maintains a more classic, focused approach. This simplicity is part of its charm. While one customer noted that they "do not serve hot sandwiches such as eggs and bacon," and only offer a limited number of cream cheese flavors, another finds this laser focus to be a strength. The philosophy seems to be: do one thing, and do it exceptionally well. This traditional approach harks back to an earlier era of bagel shops, where the bagel itself was the star of the show.

A visit to Scarsdale Bagels is an experience in transparency and tradition. The a review mentions that the "place is clean, you can see the entire operation from the lobby," which provides a sense of trust and authenticity. Seeing the bagels being made from scratch by "bagel makers" and not "deli employees" reinforces the shop's dedication to its craft. The focus is on the bagel itself: "quite small compared to a typical NY bagel, more dense than fluffy." This dense texture is a key characteristic that sets them apart from the competition, and for many, it is precisely what they are looking for. The cost-effectiveness is also a significant draw, with a customer noting that "$3.70 for a bagel with cream cheese and tomato is a steal," especially in the often-pricey New York metropolitan area.

While some customers might desire more variety, particularly in hot sandwiches or an expanded selection of cream cheeses, the shop's core demographic seems to be perfectly content with its offerings. The atmosphere is one of a no-frills, get-your-bagel-and-go establishment, which is a hallmark of many great New York food spots. The emphasis is squarely on the quality of the main product. The staff, while one review mentioned an "unhappy" server, is also described as "wonderful" by another, indicating that the overall experience is generally positive and professional. The business’s cash-only policy is an important detail for first-time visitors, as it speaks to its old-school, local-focused nature. This is a place that values tradition and straightforward transactions.

Scarsdale Bagels has carved out a distinct identity for itself by not conforming to every modern trend. Bagel is quite small compared to a typical NY bagel, more dense than fluffy. The amount of cream cheese was very light in my opinion. This store does not serve hot sandwiches such as eggs and bacon, only cream cheese butter and jelly. Not much to offer as far as cream cheese only plain and 2 other flavors. The woman who made my bagel seemed quite unhappy. The man who cashed me out was nice. $3.70 for a bagel with cream cheese and tomato is a steal. CASH ONLY.

These are the best bagels in Westchester. Hand made, ready to eat, no toasting needed. If these were the only bagels I could have for the rest of my life I’d be happy. The place is clean, you can see the entire operation from the lobby, and the staff is wonderful. I want my bagels to be from bagel makes, not from deli employees.

Stopped by hoping for a classic toasted everything bagel with egg and cheese—only to find out they don’t toast bagels, don’t offer eggs or cheese, and only carry whole or skim milk. I went with a bagel and cream cheese instead, but the spread was so light I had to check if it was there. Cute spot, but missing some breakfast essentials!

Small bagels, tasty, but small. Look at how little cream cheese they put on. Same amount for the other bagels we ordered. Total ripoff! Also, lox can only be purchased pre-packaged and they take only cash. No point in this place existing honestly, much better options near by.

Stopped on a recommendation from 2 different local families. Yes, it is just a bagel shop, not a restaurant. But the bagels were fresh, and tasted great. $7.50 for 6, and ca$h only.Took my garlic bagel home, added vegan chive cream cheese and ebtb seasoning and some fruits and veg. Was great.
