Introduction / Overview

For those in the Pennsylvania area, especially around Philadelphia, the quest for a truly exceptional bagel often leads to a debate: New York versus a different style. Stepping into the ring with a distinctive, time-honored baking method is Spread Bagelry, a local favorite that has proudly brought the art of the Montreal-style bagel to the City of Brotherly Love. Spread Bagelry is more than just a bagel shop; it's a dedicated breakfast restaurant and cafe that has cultivated a strong following due to its unique product and vibrant atmosphere. This establishment is particularly known as one of Philadelphia's pioneers in authentic Montreal bagels, providing a unique alternative to the traditional steamed and boiled bagels typically found in the Northeast.

What sets Spread Bagelry apart is a baking process that is a craft in itself. Each bagel is hand-rolled, a sign of attention to detail and traditional preparation. They are then briefly boiled in honey water, which imparts a subtle sweetness and helps create their distinctive crust. Finally, the bagels are baked in a custom-built, wood-fired brick oven, a process that delivers a chewier texture, a golden-brown crust, and a hint of smoky flavor that is characteristic of the authentic Montreal style. This method results in a bagel that is often described as slightly sweeter, denser, and with a crispier exterior compared to its New York cousin. Baked in small batches throughout the day, customers can consistently expect a fresh, warm bagel no matter when they stop by.

Beyond the bagels themselves, Spread Bagelry offers a robust menu of fresh, high-quality offerings. From their in-house prepared spreads made with farm-fresh ingredients to their wide range of creative and classic sandwiches for both breakfast and lunch, the shop has carved out a niche as a reliable spot for a quick, delicious, and unique meal. The South Street location in Philadelphia serves as a perfect anchor for locals and visitors alike seeking this specific, wood-fired bagel experience.

Features / Highlights

Spread Bagelry stands out in the competitive Philadelphia food scene through several key features that highlight its commitment to quality and unique style.

  • Authentic Montreal-Style Bagels: This is the defining feature. The process of hand-rolling, boiling in honey water, and baking in a wood-fired brick oven yields a bagel that is sweet, slightly smoky, chewier, and denser—a distinct difference from the more widely available New York style.

  • Wood-Fired Oven: The use of a custom-built, wood-fired oven is central to the shop's identity and taste profile. It’s a traditional technique that not only provides an unparalleled texture and flavor to the bagels but also contributes to the establishment’s overall artisanal feel.

  • "The Philly Special" Sandwich: A must-try item that pays homage to the city. This sandwich features Brisket, seared red onion, spinach, and Cooper Sharp cheese, offering a hearty, local-inspired lunch or breakfast option that showcases the versatility of their bagels.

  • Diverse and Creative Spreads: The commitment to fresh, homemade spreads is a major draw. Options like Pistachio Honey and Vanilla Matcha Cream Cheese allow customers to experiment beyond the traditional, creating a custom experience on their freshly baked bagel.

  • Focus on Freshness: The bagels are baked in small batches continuously throughout the day, guaranteeing that customers are almost always getting a bagel that is still warm or incredibly fresh from the oven, maximizing the unique textural qualities of the Montreal style.

What is worth choosing

For Philadelphia locals and visitors, Spread Bagelry is well worth choosing for a few compelling reasons. First and foremost is the opportunity to experience the Montreal-style bagel right here in Pennsylvania. It's a culinary journey—a bagel that is less reliant on being toasted (though you can if you prefer!) and more focused on the natural, slightly sweet, and smoky flavor derived from the honey water boil and the wood-fired bake. If you are looking to try something different from the standard New York bagel, this is your destination.

Beyond the plain bagel, the Nova Classic Sandwich and the Whitefish Classic Sandwich are quintessential choices, pairing the subtle sweetness of the bagel with high-quality smoked fish and cream cheese—a timeless combination for a perfect savory breakfast or brunch. For those seeking a hearty, hot option, the Cure Sandwich (featuring eggs, smoked bacon, oven brisket, and jalapeño cream cheese) or the city-specific The Philly Special are excellent ways to enjoy the unique bagel as a foundation for a substantial, flavorful meal. Even a simple choice like the Wood Oven Tuna Melt on a Rosemary Olive Oil Bagel, as noted by a satisfied customer, can be a mentionable and enjoyable experience, demonstrating the depth of flavor that the wood oven imparts. Whether it’s the welcoming atmosphere, the courteous and friendly service, or the sheer novelty and quality of a truly authentic Montreal bagel, Spread Bagelry is a unique and vibrant spot that continues to contribute to the rich tapestry of Philadelphia's local food culture. It provides an ideal quick visit option for a high-quality, memorable start to your day or an outstanding midday meal.

The customer service was satisfactory. The server was very friendly and courteous. The ambiance of the establishment is always pleasant. I ordered a tuna salad on an everything bagel. I noticed that the sandwich came with tomato and provolone cheese, but I requested that the tomato be omitted. But wanted avocado When the sandwich arrived, it was visually appealing. However, I encountered a dilemma when attempting to consume it. Upon opening the sandwich, I realized that it was composed of two large scoops of tuna fish, each covering half of the bagel. The tuna was topped with provolone cheese, which was a delightful addition. The issue arose when I discovered that the tuna salad lacked egg, which I typically expect in a tuna salad sandwich. Furthermore, there were diced carrots dispersed throughout the tuna fish, which I found to be an unusual and unappetizing ingredient. It appeared that the tuna fish salad contained a significant amount of carrots, which was not to my liking. I believe that customers should be informed about the presence of carrots in the tuna fish salad and should be given the option to remove them. Although I tried the salad, I found the taste and texture of the carrots to be unpleasant and distracting from the tuna fish. Furthermore, the inclusion of carrots raises concerns about potential allergies or dietary restrictions that customers may have. To ensure customer satisfaction and avoid any negative experiences, I respectfully suggest that carrots be made an optional ingredient in the tuna fish salad or that customers be clearly informed about their presence. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I wish I could review the actual food but instead I will only review the service. When I walked in to the store I looked at the menu for a couple of seconds and decided what I wanted. When I walked up to the register I was not greeted but noticed a worker on their cell phone. When she finally looked up I nodded at her, expecting her to take my order but instead she look backed down at her phone and continued scrolling. At that moment I knew I would not be supporting this business, and walked right out. Keep in mind it was not busy at all, only one other family of 4 were in the store. I was disappointed considering I just wanted to purchase a singular bagel.

Underrated. Bagel have a unique touch of sweetness and come right out of the wood fired oven. Sandwiches are much more robust than they need to be. Super friendly.

Unfortunately I was met with pure rudeness and disrespect at this spread location. Originally I was preparing for a race down the street at Snipes and bought a water to use the bathroom. Originally I was given the bathroom code which I used to simply tie my hair. Many people at the race used the restroom without a problem but when U returned to use the restroom the manager on duty denied me access because I wasn’t a customer. I assured her I bought something earlier. Unfortunately the cashier and her just gave me the most appalling attitude. I would hope that discrimination wasn’t the case but it’s the only thing that makes sense. I am not the average white customer and I do look young unfortunately. Still this isn’t a reason that racism should be tolerated. I hope and pray that they don’t continue to treat other people like this.
