About and visit notes

In the heart of Brooklyn, where vibrant cultures and diverse communities converge, a small but dedicated bakery stands out for its unique approach to classic baked goods. MEIR'S HEIMISHE BAKERY, located at 1321 Avenue J, is a local gem that has carved out a niche by offering delicious pastries that cater to health-conscious customers. This bakery is far from a large, commercial chain; it's a small, authentic establishment with a focused menu and a commitment to providing options that are both flavorful and mindful of dietary needs. The name "Heimishe" itself, a Yiddish word meaning homey and informal, perfectly captures the bakery's humble and straightforward charm, making it a familiar and comforting spot for many in the neighborhood.

What immediately sets Meir's apart is its dedication to offering products that are not only tasty but also align with specific health goals. A key highlight, as noted by a customer, is their low-carb, fat-free, and no-sugar-added muffins. This is a significant draw for locals who are looking for a "no guilt snack" that doesn't compromise on flavor. In a city where it can be a challenge to find delicious baked goods that fit into a dietary regimen, Meir's Heimishe Bakery provides a much-needed and appreciated alternative. While one customer noted that the low-carb muffin "couldn't compete with its high carb cousins," they still found it to be a "good" option, which is a high compliment for a specialty product. This honest and factual approach to their baked goods is what builds trust with the community.

The atmosphere of the bakery is as unique as its offerings. It’s a small space, with "only two small tables," which creates an intimate and unhurried environment. This is a welcome change from the large, often impersonal cafes that dot the city. The staff also adds to the distinct character of the place. A customer described the owner as "gruff" and "a little different," yet still received a "friendly hello" and helpful information about the fresh muffins. This dynamic, complemented by the "very nice Latina woman who works in the kitchen," creates a memorable and authentic New York experience. It's a reminder that a business's character is often defined by the people who run it, and Meir's Heimishe Bakery offers a genuine, no-frills interaction that many locals appreciate.

Despite its size, the bakery boasts a surprising variety of baked goods. The reviews mention not only the popular low-carb muffins but also that "the other pastries looked good," and the bakery has "many baked goods from which to choose." This wide selection ensures that there is something for everyone, whether you're strictly following a dietary plan or just looking for a delicious, freshly baked treat. Another customer who tried a banana muffin was so impressed that they "finished it!" before they could even take a picture for a review, and stated it was "warm and great!" This kind of enthusiastic feedback shows that the bakery’s products, particularly the muffins, are a definite hit. The consistent quality and warmth of their products are what make customers want to return.

I stopped in on a whim this morning after reading their sign about their low (4gr) carb, fat free, no sugar added muffins. As someone else's review noted, the owner at the counter is rather gruff and let's just say a little different but countered by the very nice Latina woman who works in the kitchen. He gave me a friendly hello and told me that the low carb muffins were still warm from the oven (mine was fresh but not warm). There are only two small tables in the bakery but being Tuesday mid morning I had a table to myself and he had no problem with me bringing in my 7-Eleven coffee. My blueberry muffin was good for a no guilt snack but it couldn't compete with its high carb cousins! :-).The other pastries looked good and although it is a small bakery, it has many baked goods from which to choose.3.5 stars

Just stopped by because I saw they had muffins in the display. got a banana muffin and it was warm and great! I suggest to try this place if you at least like muffins. Will likely stop by again, thanks to the man in front who served me

There is a simple regular Jewish bakery. I liked that they had gluten-free muffins and sugar-free cookies.

This bakery used to be the best for muffins. Now the blueberry muffin only has a couple blueberries on top and nothing inside. The edges are TOUGH you can see it’s an older muffin…. Shame

Our experience was poor. Presumably the owner served us. After we exchanged pleasantries, we asked about the babka. I ordered a 1/4 lb and he gave me more than a 1/2 lb -- over twice more than I asked. (Babka is expensive at almost $13 per pound.) The exchange felt pressured. He placed the item on the scale very quickly and prevented us from verifying the weight. What struck me as dishonest, when we got home we realized he served me two separate pieces. He could have easily given me one piece and would have satisfied my original order request. Instead, he gave me two pieces and charged twice as much! Most importantly, the babka was neither fresh nor satisfying. Bad service. Bad quality. Bad business. Do not recommend.
