I was going to give 4 stars because it was a long wait on the sidewalk, and during that wait a guy was picking up a bagel, asked to have it sliced, and they told him that would be a 50 cent charge. They finally relented and sliced his bagel, but it seemed like a pretty cheesy move for a company getting good money for their bagels. My breakfast sandwich was extremely good though, as was the coffee. Since google only allows a 5-point rating and I didn't want to dock them 20% I gave them a 5. Lose the slicing fee though Schlok's; it makes you look like cheapskates...Edit to respond to the owners reply: Yes, the optics aren't amazing. Do the math; the negative hit you take every time you charge someone to slice a bagel far, far outweighs the cost of the time and labor it takes to do the slicing. There were two other people on that sidewalk when this guy (who had ordered and paid online and didn't have 50 cents with him) had that lengthy discussion with the poor embarrassed employee who was holding out for the fee. None of us could believe it. Seriously, invest in a bagel-slicing robot or something (there's gotta be such a thing) because google reviews are gold (your reviews are why I chose your store over the myriad others in SF). Risking a bad review from someone upset about being charged half a buck to slice a bagel is the epitome of "penny wise, pound foolish"...

About and visit notes
Introduction / Overview
Schlok's Bagels & Lox has rapidly cemented its reputation within the highly competitive San Francisco food scene as a destination for what many locals and transplants consider "a damn good bagel." Born from a popular pop-up during the 2020 pandemic, this establishment, co-founded by a Michelin-trained chef and a New York-bagel enthusiast, represents a successful blend of classic East Coast bagel-making techniques with a distinct, quality-focused California twist. The name itself, a combination of the owners' names (James Lok and Zack Schwab), quickly became synonymous with a superior product, selling out within minutes during its early weekend runs.
Located on Fell Street in the North Panhandle (NoPa) area, Schlok's is not just a bagel shop; it's a small business that is fiercely committed to a craft. Their bagels are meticulously prepared: cold-proofed overnight, boiled, and baked on burlap-lined wooden boards in a revolving tray oven. This traditional method results in a product that is chewy, dense, soft on the inside, and boasts a slightly crunchy crust—a texture often cited as the closest the Bay Area offers to a true New York-style bagel, though the owners prefer the term "California bagel" as a nod to their own refined methods and use of local, organic ingredients.
Crucially, Schlok's stands out for its vertical integration, particularly with its namesake: the lox. Unlike many shops that purchase pre-sliced, vacuum-sealed salmon, Schlok's cures and smokes its salmon in-house using real cherrywood smoke and no artificial additives. This house-curing process ensures an unparalleled level of freshness and quality, making their smoked and dill-cured salmon a key element that elevates their signature sandwiches and separates them from the competition. While operating primarily as a takeout window at the Fell Street location, it has established itself as an essential stop for a quick, high-quality breakfast or brunch in the city.
Location and Accessibility
The original Schlok's Bagels & Lox is located at 1263 Fell St, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA. This highly visible location sits near the border of several popular San Francisco neighborhoods, including NoPa and the Haight-Ashbury area, making it accessible to a diverse and large customer base.
The Fell Street shop operates primarily as a takeout window, ideal for the California "Quick Visit" crowd who are looking to grab their order and continue on their day. Service options are robust for a small operation, including Curbside pickup, In-store pickup, Delivery, and traditional Takeout. For those driving, the availability of a Free parking lot is an extremely valued amenity in this dense urban section of San Francisco. Furthermore, Schlok's demonstrates a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, offering a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible parking lot. This commitment extends to being an openly LGBTQ+ friendly and Transgender safespace, fostering a welcoming environment for all community members.

Features / Highlights
Schlok's differentiates itself in the busy California bagel market through several key features focused on craftsmanship and quality.
- Commitment to Old-School Technique: The bagels are cold-proofed overnight, then boiled and baked on burlap boards. This process, which includes controlling the mineral balance of the boiling water, ensures a dense, chewy interior, a thin, crisp crust, and an overall superior texture that critics often compare favorably to New York’s best.
- House-Cured and Smoked Lox: This is arguably the biggest differentiator. Schlok's cures and smokes its salmon in-house with cherrywood, providing a buttery, translucent lox that is fresher and higher quality than the mass-market, vacuum-sealed product found elsewhere.
- Unique and Creative Schmears: The schmear menu is extensive and inventive, featuring unique combinations like Habanero Schmear, Baked Tomato Schmear, and a separate Chopped Smoked Lox Schmear. They are also known for layering toppings like green onions and capers visibly on top of the cream cheese, which enhances both flavor and presentation.
- Award-Winning Quality: Schlok's Bagels & Lox has received numerous accolades from major California publications, including being named among the "Top Bagels in the Bay Area" and "Some of SF's Best Bagels," validating its reputation as a leading artisanal bagel maker.
- Community and Inclusivity Focus: As a stated LGBTQ+ friendly and Transgender safespace, the business demonstrates a commitment to building a welcoming and inclusive community, which is a strong cultural fit for San Francisco patrons.

What is worth choosing
Schlok's Bagels & Lox is an absolute must-try for any California resident or visitor who appreciates the art of bagel-making and seeks a genuinely premium breakfast experience. This is not the place for a mass-produced, soft, bread-ring-style bagel. Schlok’s delivers a bagel that is dense, chewy, and appropriately crusty—a texture that satisfies the purist and converts the California bagel skeptic.
What makes Schlok's truly stand out is its relentless commitment to quality and the "house-made" philosophy. Choosing Schlok’s means you are choosing house-cured lox that is sliced fresh daily and is significantly more flavorful and texturally appealing than standard offerings. It also means you are choosing inventive, rich schmears like the Habanero or Chopped Smoked Lox that turn a simple spread into a culinary experience. The dedication to quality is apparent in their use of organic ingredients and even their efforts to filter and balance the water used for boiling, ensuring the proper "toothsomeness" in every bite.
While the local review mentions a small controversy regarding a slicing fee—a cost-saving measure that, while perhaps unappealing, underscores their focus on efficiency and the value of a fresh bagel—the food quality overwhelmingly outweighs minor service quibbles. The intense flavors of their bagel sandwiches, praised for being "very tasty" with a "nice and spicy" kick in the case of the jalapeño cream cheese, justify the wait and the price point. For the Californian seeking the closest thing to a classic East Coast bagel paired with truly superior, house-cured salmon, Schlok's Bagels & Lox on Fell Street offers an unmissable and award-winning option.

Sep 14 · Bay Area ReviewsI ordered online . It was quick and easy to do .Arrived just as I Rcvd text it was ready . I was worried about a line because so many people were waiting but I got my food immediately! Great service, friendly, fast , efficient offered everything I may need (and did) like napkins and a spread knife . But the food , well it was THE BEST BAGEL and spread I have EVER tried . I believe I will visit them every single day I am here on my weekend getaway. I had the everything bagels and habanero spread . I picked up a ripe Avocado on the walk home , toasted my bagel and it was heavenly .An egg on top would have sent me over the edge with flavor , but o was trying not to wake those still sleeping lol!
