About and visit notes

For New Yorkers, a great bagel isn't just breakfast—it's a way of life. It’s a part of the city’s identity, and everyone has their favorite spot. But what if you could have the best of two worlds? Black Seed Bagels brings a truly unique offering to the city's bagel scene, combining classic New York techniques with a touch of Montreal tradition to create something special. Located right in the heart of Rockefeller Center, this shop is a beacon for those who appreciate quality, flavor, and a fresh perspective on a beloved food.

Black Seed Bagels stands out by using a hybrid baking method. The bagels are hand-rolled and boiled in water sweetened with honey, a nod to the Montreal style. But instead of the usual steam oven, they're baked in a wood-fired oven. This technique gives them a distinctive texture and a subtle smoky flavor that sets them apart from the competition. The result is a bagel with a perfect chew, a hint of sweetness, and a delightfully crisp crust. Customers rave about the fresh taste and impeccable quality, noting that every bite is a culinary experience. Whether you’re a long-time New Yorker or just visiting, Black Seed offers a taste that is both familiar and excitingly new.

This shop isn’t just about bagels; it’s about the full experience. The service is consistently noted as friendly and welcoming, making every visit a pleasant one. The menu goes far beyond the basics, with a wide variety of spreads, sandwiches, and other delicious treats. From classic schmears to creative combinations, there’s something to satisfy every craving. It’s a place where tradition meets innovation, and where a simple bagel becomes a memorable meal. The focus on high-quality ingredients, from locally sourced smoked fish to house-made cream cheese, further elevates the experience. This dedication to craft and quality has earned Black Seed a loyal following and a reputation as a must-visit destination for anyone serious about bagels.

The shop's commitment to quality extends to its ingredients. They use King Arthur high gluten flour, cage-free eggs from the Hudson Valley, and locally sourced smoked fish from ACME Smoked Fish in Brooklyn. The cream cheese is sourced from Ben's in upstate New York, and the honey used for boiling the bagels is also from New York State. This emphasis on local and high-quality products ensures that every bagel and sandwich is made with the best possible ingredients. In addition to their main menu, they also offer catering services, making them a great option for office meetings, events, or large family gatherings. You can also find their bagels frozen at select Whole Foods Markets and on Fresh Direct, so you can enjoy them at home even when you can't make it to the shop. The shop also supports local nonprofits by donating a portion of the proceeds from certain products, showing a strong commitment to the New York community.

The interior of the shop is designed to be a bright and welcoming space, with natural wood and white subway tile creating a clean, modern aesthetic. The open layout and friendly atmosphere make it a perfect place to grab a quick bite and a coffee. The smell of freshly baked bagels from the wood-fired oven is a sensory delight that greets you as soon as you walk in. While the space is small, it’s thoughtfully designed to handle the steady stream of customers. The efficiency of the staff ensures that even during busy times, the wait is manageable. The to-go window is a convenient feature for those on the move, allowing you to grab your order and head back to your busy day without delay. The shop's commitment to community is also evident in its sustainability practices, such as upcycling unsold bagels into bagel chips and donating a portion of profits from specific items to local charities.

Whether you're craving a simple plain bagel with cream cheese, or an inventive sandwich with smoked salmon and unique toppings, Black Seed Bagels has you covered. Their menu includes both traditional and creative options, so there's always something new to try. Customers particularly enjoy the variety of cream cheese flavors, including the spicy hot honey cream cheese that one reviewer called "seriously so good" with a plain bagel and pickles. For those with dietary restrictions, the shop also offers a gluten-free bagel made from gluten-free wheat and a variety of vegan spreads, including tofu cream cheese. The shop's commitment to catering to different tastes and needs is a testament to its customer-focused approach. The menu also includes a range of other items, from breakfast sandwiches to classic deli sandwiches, pizza bagels, and sweets like chocolate chip cookies.

Absolutely the best bagels in town! Black Seed Bagels in Rockefeller Center is a real highlight. The bagels are fresh, perfectly baked and simply heavenly. The range of different toppings and flavors is huge, but every bite feels like a small culinary experience. I can particularly recommend the vegetarian bagel - a true masterpiece! The service is friendly and the location couldn't be better. Definitely a must for all bagel lovers. I will definitely be back!

Black Seed Bagels is amazing. The first time I went, I got a cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese and it was so fresh and delicious. The bagel had the perfect chew and the cream cheese was super smooth. I had to go back and try something different so I got a plain bagel with hot honey cream cheese and pickles. It sounds wild but it was seriously so good. The sweet and spicy with the tangy pickles just worked. Everything I’ve had here has been awesome. Also, the workers are super nice! Definitely recommend.

We had breakfast bagels here this week & mine (BLT), was excellent, the other 3 people in my party had plain bagels with butter & they were all burnt, just about edible & if we hadn’t already left the building I would have returned them and asked for replacements. Mine was good though!

Lovely bagels in a great spot. But you need to go down the stairs inside the building to find it (it's not as easy as some other cafes nearby!). But worth it. Clearly locals get their bagels here too
