Balloon Roof Baking Company, nestled in the Fife area, is one such destination that has quickly garnered a reputation for its commitment to old-world baking craft and superior ingredients. More than just a shop, it represents a passionate dedication to the art of bread and pastry making, focusing on slow fermentation, traditional methods, and achieving the perfect balance of texture and flavor in every item.
Balloon Roof Baking Company distinguishes itself by specializing in naturally leavened sourdough bread. Their signature loaves are a testament to the fact that the simple ingredients of flour, water, and salt, when handled with expertise and patience, can yield something truly extraordinary. They champion a method that favors whole grains and avoids commercial yeast, preservatives, and bleached or bromated flour—a significant draw for health-conscious consumers in the Washington region. The final product is consistently a dark-mahogany loaf with a thin, crisp crust and a moist, open crumb.
While their bread forms the foundation of their reputation, the selection of specialty pastries and sweet treats transforms a visit into a gourmet experience. Customers consistently rave about their exquisite, often-rotating pastry offerings, which frequently include highly sought-after items like canelés, cruffins, and savory focaccia. This blend of masterfully crafted bread and inventive, delicious pastries ensures that Balloon Roof Baking Company caters to both the daily necessity of fresh bread and the occasional desire for a truly decadent treat. It is a local bakery that exemplifies quality and craft for the discerning tastes of the Pacific Northwest.

When local consumers opt for this Fife bakery, they are investing in craftsmanship that distinguishes it from large-scale commercial operations.
The most compelling reason to choose Balloon Roof is the fundamental philosophy of their bread-making: it’s all about the sourdough. The focus on a slow, natural fermentation process, hand-forming, and baking to a superior crust-to-crumb ratio yields bread that is complex in flavor, easy to digest, and undeniably fresh. For those who understand and appreciate authentic bread, the absence of commercial yeast and chemical additives is a significant guarantee of quality and purity that is hard to find locally. Their breads, such as the Kalamata loaf, are not just ingredients, but culinary experiences in themselves.
Beyond the bread, the high-end specialty pastries are a major draw. The bakery’s ability to execute challenging items like the Canelé and the innovative Cruffin at a high level of quality provides a truly unique gourmet offering in the area. Customers report that "everything I've ever gotten here has been delicious," highlighting the consistency and success across their entire product line. This means a single visit can satisfy both the need for daily artisan bread and a craving for an exceptional, indulgent treat.
Furthermore, the business model—focused on direct sales and farmers market presence—reinforces the commitment to freshness and customer connection. By not using distributors, every loaf is baked hot and delivered fresh, often the same day it was made. For the local Washington customer, this means unparalleled freshness and the opportunity to support a dedicated local artisan who prioritizes product integrity and a genuinely sweet, friendly service experience. Balloon Roof Baking Company offers a taste of true European-style bakery excellence right here in Fife.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Always delicious food, and everyone's sweet! If you haven't had canelés before, get a box. And the spiced brownie, and a savory focaccia, and definitely one of the cruffins... Basically, everything I've ever gotten here has been delicious.
June 28 · Ciaran B (DigitalisC)I’ve been eyeing this cruffin at the farmers market, and I finally ordered the crème brûlée cruffin — oh my goodness! It was scrumptious and perfectly flaky.
August 19 · Jennifer TrinhI LOVE LOVE LOVE this bakery, I am so happy I found them at the farmers market in Lakewood. When winter comes I will be going to their store directly. Everything and everyone is amazing and the bread and all the other baked goods are out of this world. They do the farmers market in Proctor also. I dont like Proctor so I go to the other one. Thank you Balloon Roof. Yes I am a real customer
August 10 · Glen TallmanTheir baked goods are worth the trip! However everything sells out quickly, It is only open to public briefly a couple days a week-- so it's not a service oriented place, just counter service/takeout. They should have a coffee shop or 1 nearby-- because i guarantee you will want to dive right away into your amazing baked goods!!BEST bagels, cinnamon rolls, and tasty variety of artisan breads. Our family immediately went nuts sampling the things we brought home-- and everything was a winner! Don-- the baker/owner is worth following his creations!! I miss that he is no longer in Tacoma, but they are at most of the farmers markets! (check theirwebsite).
July 22 · Chris NorlundPassing through Fife we stopped here for breakfast. We ordered a cinnamon roll, a babka, a squash focaccia, two chocolate chip cookies and a loaf of roasted onion Gruyère. The young lady working the counter did an excellent job advising us on our order and everything tasted amazing… we will definitely be coming back- only earlier so we don’t miss the most popular items. I think the cookie and the babka were probably our favorite items.
