Jen's Artisan Breads and Boards II Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Jen's Artisan Breads and Boards II, often affectionately referred to by its German name, "Bäckerei," is a truly unique culinary surprise nestled in the charming and historically rich town of Oregon, Illinois. Located in a beautiful historical building at 410 W Washington St, this second location of Jen's Artisan Breads specializes in bringing authentic, old-world baking techniques to the modern consumer in Ogle County and beyond. The distinctive "dark and moody" aesthetic of the Oregon storefront offers a completely different, cozy café vibe compared to its main Mt. Morris baking facility.
The mission of this bakery is simple yet profound: to bring a healthy loaf of bread, bursting with flavor, to the community. This goal is achieved through an unwavering commitment to quality and process. Jen’s signature approach involves slow fermentation, minimal commercial yeast, and the exclusive use of unbleached, unbromated flour, filtered water, and fresh, often locally sourced, ingredients. This careful process not only develops a rich, complex flavor but also makes the bread easier to digest due to a lower glycemic level.
While the Mt. Morris location handles the primary baking and wholesale operations, the Oregon Bäckerei serves as a cozy retail storefront and café, a convenient spot for commuters and locals to quickly grab specialty pastries, coffee, and freshly baked loaves. From European-style almond croissants—praised for their "hand folded layers made with real butter"—to cream puffs that customers have described as "heaven so early," Jen's Artisan Breads and Boards II sets a "new standard" for baked goods in the Illinois region.
