La Mexicana Bakery Introduce
For California residents in the San Gabriel Valley (SGV) and beyond, La Mexicana Bakery stands as a long-standing institution and a culinary landmark in El Monte. More than just a simple bakery, this local favorite is a vibrant hub dedicated to the craft of authentic Mexican baking and traditional cuisine, having served the community for decades. Patrons who have been coming since the mid-2000s, and even those who boast of 15 years of loyalty, consistently hail it as the essential destination for the freshest and best Mexican bread in the region.
The core of La Mexicana’s appeal lies in its impressive and daily-refreshed selection of pan dulce, or Mexican sweet bread. Walking in, you are greeted by an array of nearly 50 types of traditional baked goods, each item a testament to Mexican culinary heritage. From the quintessential, circular conchas with their colorful sugar toppings—available in classic vanilla, chocolate, and pink strawberry—to the long, perfect loaves used for making tortas, the focus is overwhelmingly on authentic, freshly baked products. The bakery’s success is built on this foundation of fresh bread and a variety of delicious pastries, all intended to pair perfectly with a hot cup of coffee or milk.
Beyond the bread baskets, La Mexicana Bakery often operates as a dual concept, combining the panadería (bakery) with a taquería or full-service Mexican food counter. This combination offers a comprehensive, one-stop shop where locals can pick up breakfast pastries, order a custom cake, and take home a prepared meal or fresh-made tortillas. While customer feedback sometimes notes a desire for clearer pricing and improved customer interaction, the quality of the bread itself remains an overwhelmingly positive and consistent point of praise, cementing its reputation as a vital cultural and culinary establishment.
La Mexicana Bakery is strategically located in El Monte, CA, making it a highly accessible destination within the expansive San Gabriel Valley.
The official address for the bakery is 10147 Garvey Ave, El Monte, CA 91733, USA. This location places it conveniently on Garvey Avenue, a main artery in the city. The store is known for its impressive operating hours, typically open early and closing late, often running from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM seven days a week. The payment system is modern and inclusive, accepting major options to serve all local residents, including Debit Cards, NFC Mobile Payments, and crucially, SNAP/EBT benefits, highlighting its role as an essential community provider.

Choosing to visit La Mexicana Bakery is choosing a piece of authentic Southern California Mexican heritage. Based on the overwhelming consensus of local patrons, there are several standout items that are absolutely worth choosing on your visit.
First and foremost, you must prioritize the Pan Dulce, or Mexican sweet bread. Locals testify that this is the best Mexican bread available, and the best way to experience it is to fill a tray with a variety. Be sure to pick up the signature Conchas (in vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry flavors) for their soft, airy dough and crumbly, sweet topping. Also look for Empanadas de Camote (sweet potato turnover) and a few Elotes, the cinnamon bread filled with vanilla paste. You may need to ask for the price, as the system is often informal, but the quality of the bread is guaranteed.
For a savory treat or a full meal, you should not leave without a Torta. The bakery's own long white bread loaves are the secret ingredient, providing the perfect structure for a hearty Mexican sandwich. For those looking for a traditional dish, the Tamales come highly recommended. They are described as delicious and "extremely large," offering three filling options—pork in red salsa, chicken in green salsa, and rajas (jalapeño and cheese). Ordering them "preparados" (prepared) with sour cream and salsa is a popular local tradition.
Finally, if you are planning a celebration, place a 72-hour custom order for their Tres Leches Cake. This iconic, moist cake is a specialty and is the perfect finale to any California family gathering. Whether you are grabbing a quick coffee and pan dulce before starting your day or catering a large event, La Mexicana Bakery offers a taste of true, local Mexican tradition.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The bread is very good I will admit I’ve been buying bread here for more than 15 years and I can’t find any other place as good. With that being said I don’t appreciate the attitude of the lady’s who now work there. They have no manners and they are super aggressive when handling your bread 😤. I also don’t like the fact that there aren’t any set prices for any of the breads??? How are we supposed to know what they are charging? They also don’t provide any type of receipts, nor do they ask if I wanted one. very disappointed in the way the place is being run.
January 30 · corii gomezIf you want fresh pan dulce, this is the spot. I've been coming here since 2006... and I can say this is the place for the best Mexican Bread. Love this place!!
May 24 · SandraThis place closes its doors at 9am to clean. Lost a few customers as I waited 20 minutes outside. The bread is good but I honestly have never waited so long just so they can laugh and "clean" up the place.
February 02 · Carlos PerezWhen have you has a tres leches cake dry on the edges!?!? I called and they told me to go back... I go and they say that's how they make them, he says the middle is moist and I was like ok so we can only eat the middle and discard the.edges!?!? Peaches dry and he said they were good, I compared it with another cake and they looked fresh... Really???We've gotten eay too many cakes from there and never have ee had any issues until now amd after he poked on the cake from the middle to show me it was moist then he just says he can't do anything!!!So what are we supposed to do?? Just eat the middle part and discard basically a whole cake that wasn't cheap at all🙄🙄Awful customer service and worst cake ever!!!!!
May 17 · Ali MrzTiny bakery or shall I say Panaderia? The bolillo is terrific here. So is the sweet bread. The Borracho is my favorite. The one thing I do NOT like is that they always sell out of the stuff I like. The ladies that work here are as sweet as the bread.
