Macrina Bakery & Cafe Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For residents of Washington state, the name Macrina Bakery & Cafe is synonymous with a decades-long commitment to the art of baking. Established in Seattle, Macrina has grown from a single location to become one of the region’s most respected artisan bakeries, celebrated for its rustic European-style breads, sophisticated pastries, and robust café menu. This particular location at 1943 1st Ave S sits in the dynamic SODO (South of Downtown) neighborhood, perfectly positioned to serve both the bustling professional community and local residents seeking a moment of culinary excellence.
Macrina’s philosophy, inspired by the 4th-century Greek mystic St. Macrina, emphasizes community, sharing, and a simple, self-sufficient life, which translates directly into their product. The founders' passion for bread is evident in every loaf, baked using time-honored techniques and often featuring regionally sourced grains. This is more than just a bakery; it is a full-service experience that functions as a breakfast restaurant, brunch destination, and cafe, making it an essential stop for any Washingtonian seeking high-quality food in a welcoming, beautiful space. From a quick coffee and an Almond Pinwheel to a full weekend brunch, Macrina has cemented its status as a local institution since its founding in 1993. Their dedication has earned them numerous local and national accolades, including recognition from prestigious sources like Fodor’s and Condé Nast Traveler.
The menu at Macrina is extensive and diverse, ensuring there is a compelling option for every palate and time of day. Morning offerings range from the rich and flaky Chocolate Cornetto to hearty sandwiches like the Sausage Breakfast Biscuit. For lunch, patrons can enjoy freshly prepared items such as the Grilled Cheese or the Organic Greens Salad. The bakery's core specialty, however, remains its bread—a foundation built on full-flavored, naturally leavened sourdoughs and traditional loaves that celebrate Northwest ingredients like apples, potatoes, and cranberries. The entire operation is a tribute to quality ingredients and artisanal craftsmanship.

What is Worth Choosing
For residents and visitors of Washington, Macrina Bakery & Cafe is worth choosing for its exceptional dedication to quality, its deep community roots, and the sheer variety of its offerings. The choice to patronize Macrina is a vote for supporting a local institution that champions Northwest ingredients and artisanal methods.
Specifically, Macrina is the perfect choice for users prioritizing ingredients and craftsmanship. Their close relationship with the Bread Lab and local farmers ensures that the flours used in items like their sourdough and bagels are flavorful, nutritious, and sustainably grown right here in Washington state. The complexity of items like the Roly Poly—described by a customer as a slightly denser, richly swirled croissant with a hint of cream cheese frosting—demonstrates the skilled, high-level baking that sets them apart from conventional bakeries. Even with polarizing items, like the Cinnamon Roll that some patrons find too innovative, the quality of the dough, noted as a “slightly dense croissant,” speaks to the foundation of their high-end French and Italian-influenced baking traditions.
Furthermore, Macrina is an excellent choice for a full culinary experience. As a brunch restaurant, the option to order a Morning BLT Sandwich with perfectly toasted bread, or one of their acclaimed breakfast sandwiches, elevates the stop beyond a mere pastry run. The availability of Delivery and Takeout options further enhances its value, making it a convenient choice for busy mornings or planned gatherings. In essence, choosing Macrina Bakery & Cafe means selecting a piece of Seattle’s distinguished culinary history, built on integrity, local sourcing, and the undeniable joy of artisan baking. It is a choice that ensures a quality meal, a comfortable environment, and support for a business that gives back to the Washington community.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I think I have been patronizing the Macrina Bakery in SODO for over 10 years! I stopped in a while ago to try one item; the cinnamon roll. My opinion: confusing and the product simply did not work.I understand bakery have to be innovative but a few things are wrong here.1) The "cinnamon roll" I bought was not a cinnamon roll which is misleading. I believe the customer should know what they are buying through a name. Isn't that the purpose of a name?2) The cinnamon roll is not a cinnamon roll which lessens the experience. I felt sorry for this cinnroll like it had been neutered and assimilated into a world which is not its own; forfeiting all its downhome qualities in the process; e.g. the gooey center, the fluffiness3) I would not say this "cinnamon roll" is a crossover, I would say it is masquerade.4) I feel like cream cheese frosting on a cinnamon roll is cheating an is not always better. This cream cheese frosting was a little runny. I feel like the cinnamon roll is not flat enough to hold the frosting well enough which is why people traditionally use icing.Cinnamon flavor: 2/10Dough: slightly dense croissantCenter Filling & Goo: 1/10Frosting: 5/10Suggestion: Call this product something else that reflects what the customer will experience.
April 17 · Uoo HKNKBeautiful space, delicious food. We ordered a Roly Poly sweet roll, it was like a croissant but a bit more dense with raisins and a not to sweet swirl with a dab of cream cheese frosting. We also ordered the Morning BLT. It had two over medium eggs, bacon, tomato and lettuce. The bread was perfectly toasted. I got a raspberry rhubarb upside down cake to go and a loaf of their squash bread. I'd definitely stop back in if in the area. I wanted to try so many more things.
April 02 · Shannon MaxeyIf you’re looking to treat yourself, the bakery has a delicious selection. Prices are WAY high though. Chocolate croissant 🥐 almost 6 dollars plus tip? 😬🫤. It was good…but not sure it was worth the price. Not a big fan of the “automatic tipping trend” where the cashier flips around the payment terminal watching to see what you select as a tip. It’s not like the cashier made the croissant. But they did do a marvelous job, grabbing it with tongs and putting it in a bag 😋
April 02 · M EdwardsA best local artisan bakery service that sells baked good, cakes, pastries and coffee in Seattle. It’s a frequent stop when we do group bike rides.Always found the staff very friendly and service is pretty fast even in busy times. There’s seating indoors and outdoor. Lots of merchandise including locally roasted coffee beans.Selection of pastries both savory and sweet is large and keeps rotating to include seasonal flavors. All items we tried were appeasing. Fresh ingredients, locally sourced and served so nicely. Love lattes, perfect blend of caffeine and milk/froth.Their breakfast/lunch menu is also good accommodating many options from vegetarians, vegan, and meat. Avocado toast is my favorite! A must try if you’re passing by!
June 16 · Aplih AMacrina Bakery & Cafe stands as a rare example of quality in a world filled with mass-produced, flavorless options. Their artisan breads and gourmet treats are crafted with care and skill, offering a refreshing alternative to the convenience-driven food industry. The welcoming, comfortable atmosphere complements the high standard of their offerings, creating a space where quality is prioritized over trends. If you value excellence and craftsmanship, Macrina Bakery & Cafe is a place that deserves your attention. It’s a testament to what’s possible when time and effort are invested in doing things right.
