Miette Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Miette Patisserie, a beloved institution in the San Francisco Bay Area, is a true destination for those with a sweet tooth who appreciate the marriage of classic European elegance and fresh, high-quality California ingredients. The name "Miette" itself, meaning "little crumb" in French, hints at the bakery’s attention to detail and reverence for the smallest, sweetest things in life. Founded in 2001 by lifelong baker Meg Ray, the vision was to create everyday indulgences that captured the beauty of traditional European pastries while staying true to the unrefined, wholesome ingredients sourced locally in California.
Located in the iconic Ferry Building Marketplace, Miette’s shop is often described as a dainty, jewel-box escape, a slice of Parisian life transplanted onto the San Francisco Bay. The charming, pastel-colored decor, with its pale pink walls and gleaming glass display cases, is immediately captivating, drawing visitors in to admire the lovingly crafted cakes, cookies, and confections. This location embodies the patisserie side of the business, presenting an array of exquisitely presented baked goods that are as beautiful to look at as they are delicious to eat.
Miette is renowned for its commitment to ingredient quality, sourcing key components from trusted local producers, such as organic butter from Straus Family Creamery, flour from Guisto’s, eggs from Petaluma, and chocolate from the family-run Guittard Chocolate Company. This dedication ensures that every bite, from a delicate Parisian Macaron to a rich layer cake, reflects the vibrant taste and integrity of the Golden State’s produce. The bakery successfully blends American nostalgia, often seen in its popular cake and cookie flavors, with refined French technique, resulting in a unique and utterly charming array of treats.
Miette has earned significant praise over the years, including being rated as one of the top ten pastry shops in the world by a prominent publication. For California residents and visitors alike, Miette is more than just a bakery; it is an experience of delightful discovery and a perfect example of the Bay Area's world-class culinary scene.

What is Worth Choosing
For anyone visiting Miette at the San Francisco Ferry Building, the array of choices can be delightfully overwhelming, but several items stand out as essential selections. The core of Miette’s appeal lies in its perfected classics and commitment to flavor integrity, making their signature items highly recommended.
One must-try is the selection of Cakes and Cupcakes. The Gingerbread Cake With Cream Cheese Frosting and its smaller counterpart, the Gingerbread Cupcake With Cream Cheese Frosting ($5.25), are often highlighted by customers for their moist texture and perfectly spiced flavor profile, beautifully complemented by the tangy frosting. The Vanilla Tomboy ($50.00) and Strawberry Tomboy 6" ($50.00) cakes represent Miette's whimsical and classic layer cake offerings—simple, pure, and flawlessly executed. For chocolate aficionados, the rich Scharffen Berger Cake ($60.00) or the personal-sized Mini Scharffen Berger Cake ($10.00) are an indulgent treat, showcasing high-quality chocolate.
The Cookies are another category that draws consistently positive feedback, particularly for the quality and reliable flavor. The Chocolate Chip Cookies ($12.00) are a testament to the bakery’s enduring quality, as noted by a long-time customer who praised the consistent, great taste over many years. For a uniquely Bay Area flavor, the Lavender Shortbread ($12.00) offers a delicate and aromatic experience. The Gingersnaps ($14.00) also have a strong reputation, having been listed on a local magazine's list of top foods to try in San Francisco.
Macarons are one of the bakery's signature best-sellers. Available in sets like the Box Of 8 Macarons (Seasonal) ($26.00), these Parisian-style treats are celebrated for their authentic texture, though flavors can vary seasonally. While some feedback suggests the flavor distinctions can be subtle, they remain a top-selling item, showcasing the bakery's French patisserie technique.
Finally, don't overlook the Miette Candy and handmade confections. The Handmade Caramels ($18.00) and Fleur De Sel Caramels ($18.00) are gourmet delights, and the Marshmallows ($8.00) are perfect for a nostalgic sweet moment. The decorative, delicate Floral Meringues ($8.00) make for a beautiful and light indulgence.
In summary, whether you are seeking a grand cake for a special occasion or a simple, perfectly baked cookie for an afternoon treat, Miette’s selection of classic, high-quality, and beautifully presented baked goods and confections makes it a standout choice for discerning dessert lovers in California. The combination of French inspiration and organic, local California ingredients ensures that every purchase is a delightful and flavorful experience.
Miette Food & drink
Miette Candy
- Floral Meringues $8.00
Our meringues are meltingly crisp and light and piped in delicate shades of pink, green and yellow. They are flavored with a hint of essential oil in the flavors of rose, lemon verbena, and Meyer lemon.
- Fleur De Sel Caramels $18.00
The secret to their perfection is no secret. Like all of our products, it starts with the quality of a few simple ingredients. In this case, the foundation is the triumvirate of Straus family creamery organic heavy cream, whole milk and butter. The other key ingredient is evaporated cane juice instead of refined white sugar. We love the amber molasses flavor.
- Marshmallows $8.00
The Miette marshmallow is moist, creamy, and speckled with bits of vanilla bean. It makes an outstanding S'more and sits perfectly in a cup of dark european-style hot chocolate. 6 marshmallows per bag.
- Hazelnut Dragées $12.00
Our hazelnut drageés begin with juicy, fresh, organic hazelnuts and we toast them until golden brown. We coat them with a micro-thin layer of crunchy caramel and then cover them in bittersweet 72%25 Valrhona chocolate and dust them in unsweetened cocoa powder. The rich, unique taste of hazelnut runs wild in this combination of sweet, smooth, bitter, and crunchy.
- English Toffee $20.00
We think the magic of our English toffee is the ultra-thin layer of caramel-toffee. It's always crisp and snappy. We coat the toffee with dark 66% Valrhona chocolate and sprinkle it with toasted almonds.we use Straus family creamery butter, organic cane sugar and each batch is handmade. It's an amazing combination of textures and flavors.
- Almond Dragées $12.00
We start with fresh organic California almonds and toast them till golden brown. Then we coat them with a micro-thin layer of crisp caramel. Then they are coated with 72%25 Valrhona chocolate and dusted in unsweetened cocoa powder. The result is a delicious union of flavors and textures that deserves a torch song of its own.
- Handmade Caramels $18.00
Our caramels are made fresh daily with butter and cream from Straus family creamery and organic cane sugar. As they're cooling, the caramels receive a hefty sprinkling of maldon sea salt and are hand-wrapped in waxed paper. Each bag contain four Fleur de sel caramels and four chocolate caramels.
- Ballpark Brittle $16.00
Cookies
- Gingersnaps $14.00
The Miette gingersnap is fired up with three forms of ginger – ground, candied, and fresh – and balanced with Straus family creamery organic butter for a snap that is both crisp and chewy. Spiced with a peppery blend of nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon, and clove, and sweetened with both honey and molasses. Each cookie is punched out in a pretty scalloped circle and dusted with crunchy organic sugar.
- Lemon Shortbread $12.00
This cookie takes The Tart, fresh flavor of lemons and contrasts it beautifully with the richness of butter. The zest for these cookies comes from the year-round supply of organic lemons we have in California.
- Chocolate Sablés $12.00
Pierre hermé of Paris is the inspiration behind this cookie. The Miette version replicates the same experience of biting into a crisp, sandy cookie with bits of pure, soft chocolate. This recipe calls for both cocoa and chocolate. When you bring these two ingredients together, you get a resounding chocolate taste, much more complex than if you were to use just one or the other.
- Walnut Shortbread $12.00
We toast the walnuts to heighten their wonderfully earthy taste, and then grind them into a coarse flour. Just before baking, the cookies get a sprinkling of maldon sea salt.
- Graham Cracker $14.00
Our graham Cracker is a snappy reinvention of the classic, made irresistible with lots of butter and honey. Opened around the campfire, it makes an excellent S'more! 10 oz tub, hand-packed with 10 cookies.
- Peanut Butter Cookie $12.00
Our peanut butter cookies are unusually crisp, yet melt in your mouth with a shortbread-like texture. We grind organic peanuts and add more-than-a-pinch of salt to accentuate the flavor. We mark each cookie with the traditional cross-hatch on top.
- Lavender Shortbread $12.00
Bite-sized and delicate, this buttery shortbread cookie has a restrained floral taste that will remind you of summer. The lavender is picked from the fields at eatwell farms in Dixon, California.
- Chocolate Chip Cookies $12.00
There are so many great versions of this all-American favorite, and here's ours: petite chocolate chips, crushed toasted walnuts and coarsely-ground oatmeal incorporated into a crisp, buttery cookie.
- Brown Butter Shortbread $12.00
A classic butter cookie with a rich, complex flavor made from browning Straus butter to a deep chestnut color and adding a hint of vanilla. It's the latest addition to our cookie line and showcases our philosophy that the best flavors come from a few simple, quality ingredients.
- Chocolate Wafers $14.00
This cookie is based on the chocolate wafer cookie that is used to make the famous icebox cake. The Miette version is crisp and buttery, with an intense cocoa flavor that is highlighted with both sweet and salty accents. We use cocoa powder that is especially dark, and it makes the cookie almost black. Each cookie is cut by hand, sprinkled with sugar, and baked to crispy perfection.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This Branch is located inside the Ferry building of SF.Firstly visited in 2014 and loved their homemade recipe cookies, which we bought at that time and really tasted great! In 2025, I revisited them and picked the “chocolate chip cookies” and they sustained the same great taste with the evident quality. Thanks to all concerned for keeping up, and hope to grab another pack of that great cookies in future visits.
August 11 · Ahmed JaberEverything looks so beautiful, the packaging is very cute, but the cookies taste stale… The Turkish delight is tasty, the cupcake is also very delicious, but the cookies and macarons disappointed me… In the macarons you can’t even feel the flavor variations, it’s like you’re just eating plain sugar and nothing else
August 15 · An RoWent here to get macaron and Turkish delight. The rose flavoured Turkish delights were good. Dulche de leche macaron was overly sweet. Couldn’t feel the dulche de leche flavour.
April 26 · Sushmita KadamVery happy with the treats we got from Miette! The Turkish delight is so good! The raspberry and peach flavors were my favorite - super smooth and simple flavors - I wish I had gone back for more! The cookies were really good. $14 a box was a little pricey, but I considered it a treat and tried to make them last. Both varieties we tried (brown butter and peanut butter were very yummy. Crumbly, sweet, short bread goodness :)The peach gummies were really good too. All the items kept very well to take home and were just as tasty up to 3 weeks later - then they were all gone! Will be returning whenever in the area.Store was clean and organized, super cute and a pleasant bakery. The cupcakes also looked really good. 😋
September 30 · Jordyn PikeThe lines in the ferry building are always long, but if you are looking for a sweet treat, this is the line to wait in! It actually goes quickly - and truly worth a few minutes wait. We’ve been coming almost since they opened in 2001! That’s how much we love them! We always get the pot de crème - a little glass dish of chocolate decadence! But this time we had the buttermilk panna cotta topped with fresh strawberries - and for a lighter treat, the smooth silkiness of this was perfect! Not as heavy, but definitely hit the spot. The macaroons are also delicious! Such a cute spot, for a moment you almost feel transported to a charming little European bakery. It’s a never pass it by kind of place!
