Pop's Bun Shop Introduce
Pop's Bun Shop: Bringing a Unique and Delicious Bakery Experience to Pennsylvania
Introduction / Overview
For residents of Pennsylvania with a sophisticated palate for artisanal baked goods, Pop's Bun Shop stands out as a true culinary gem in Philadelphia. More than just a local bakery, this shop has carved out a niche by specializing in an array of sweet and savory buns, notably the traditional Czech pastry known as the Kolache (or the savory version, klobásník), alongside classic comfort treats like Sticky Buns and Cinnamon Rolls. The shop is owned by a passionate husband-and-wife duo, John and Karen, who have mastered the art of baking with a light and fluffy yeasted dough.
Pop's Bun Shop operates as a small, corner bakery, creating an intimate and sought-after experience that is focused entirely on the quality of their product. This focus means they bake their products in small, fresh batches and stay open until they sell out, which speaks volumes about their commitment to freshness and their growing local popularity. The limited operating hours (Thursday-Saturday from 9 AM – 1 PM) and the high demand often mean a line forms down the block, a testament to the irresistible nature of their creations. This truly is the perfect spot for a quick visit to satisfy a morning sweet craving or grab a unique breakfast item on the weekend.
The menu, though small and focused, is packed with flavor and variety, featuring rotating seasonal favorites and beloved staples. Customers consistently praise the perfectly balanced sweetness of the treats, describing them as light and not overly sweet. Service is friendly and personal, with the owners themselves often serving customers from their walk-up window. Pop's Bun Shop offers simple and modern payment options, accepting both Credit cards and Debit cards for convenience.
Location and Accessibility
Pop's Bun Shop is strategically located near one of Philadelphia's most famous culinary landmarks, the Italian Market. This prime location in the Bella Vista neighborhood makes it an essential stop for anyone visiting or living in the area. The physical address is:
800 S 9th St, Philadelphia, PA 19147, USA
The shop is positioned right on the northern end of the vibrant Italian Market, placing it within a dynamic food hub that includes other well-known bakeries and food establishments. For those driving, the area offers the benefit of free street parking, which is helpful in a busy city neighborhood. However, visitors should be aware that the shop operates from a tiny 300 sq. foot space with a simple walk-up window for ordering. There is no indoor seating; the service option is strictly Takeout. This focus on efficiency ensures that locals can grab their buns and go, but newcomers should plan to queue, especially on busy weekend mornings. Its proximity to other popular food spots makes it easy to incorporate a visit to Pop's Bun Shop into a larger morning market run.
Services Offered
Reflecting its small, specialized nature, Pop's Bun Shop offers a streamlined service model focused entirely on the quality of its fresh baked goods:

Features / Highlights
Pop's Bun Shop has garnered significant attention from the local Pennsylvania media and community for several key highlights that make it a uniquely appealing destination:
- The Cinnamon Roll: Consistently highlighted by customers as "absolutely divine" and a must-try. Reviewers often note the perfect balance of sweetness and a wonderfully creamy frosting.
- Authentic Kolache: They specialize in this Czech pastry, which provides a unique offering in the Philadelphia bakery scene. They offer both traditional sweet fillings (often fruit or curd) and savory versions, which are essentially breakfast or brunch encased in a light, pillowy dough.
- Light and Fluffy Dough: The foundation of all their products is a light, airy, and fluffy yeasted dough that is noted for being perfectly chewy without being overly sweet or heavy.
- Savory Selections: Their savory Kolache, such as the Sausage & Gravy or the Egg, Cheese & Tomato Chutney buns, offer a satisfying, Southern-style breakfast experience perfect for a morning grab-and-go. They sometimes experiment with new flavors like spinach, egg, and feta with sweet chili jam.
- Friendly and Attentive Service: Despite the frequent lines, customers appreciate the warm, friendly service provided by the owners, which contributes to the small, welcoming neighborhood feel.
- High Demand and Exclusivity: The fact that they sell out quickly underscores the quality and freshness of their items, motivating local patrons to make an early morning visit.

What is Worth Choosing
For any Pennsylvanian seeking a truly unique and high-quality breakfast or treat, Pop's Bun Shop is unequivocally worth the visit. The main draw is the bakery's dedication to its specific, artisanal menu, executed with excellence.
The single item most worth choosing, according to the vast majority of local reviews, is the Cinnamon Roll. Its perfect balance of a light, soft bun and a creamy, delicious, not-too-sweet frosting makes it a standout treat that many customers commit to returning for. For those who enjoy a bit of crunch, the Sticky Bun with nuts is also a great choice.
However, the real uniqueness of Pop's Bun Shop lies in the Kolache. These stuffed, baked buns, made from their signature light and fluffy dough, offer an experience rarely found outside of specific cultural communities. We highly recommend trying one of each kind. Start your day with a savory Kolache like the Egg, Cheese & Tomato Chutney—a complete, satisfying meal wrapped in a delicate bun. For dessert, or a mid-morning pick-me-up, the seasonal sweet flavors, such as the bright and tart Raspberry Lemon Curd Kolache, are a delightful experience. Be advised, though, that with the Kolache, the filling tends to be centered, leaving the edges as plain, fluffy dough, a common style for this pastry.
Because items are baked in small batches and often sell out well before the 1 PM closing time, the single most crucial piece of advice for local users is to plan an early visit. Getting there close to the 9 AM opening time on a Thursday or Friday will ensure you have the best chance to try their full range of sought-after offerings before they are crossed off the menu.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We got the cinnamon roll, the sticky bun, and the raspberry and lemon curd kolache. The cinnamon was absolutely divine. The frosting tasted amazing and was perfectly sweet and creamy. The lemon flavor of the filling was perfect, but the pastry as a whole would be better if it was spread across the entire top because the outside is just dough. Same for the raspberry kolache. The sticky bun with nuts was also great. If I were to come back it would definitely be for the cinnamon roll.
June 14 · nom nom foodieNote: Limited hours (Thursday-Saturday from 9 AM - 1 PM)We came across Pop’s Bun Shop when they were close to closing (around 12 PM) and they had run out of most of their popular buns. We tried the cinnamon and lemon curd buns. Both were delicious, light, and not too sweet! The lady serving us was very friendly and helped answer all our questions. No seating - just queue at the window to order.
June 11 · Michelle TWent for the first today and tried almost one of everything with my friends. A few folks in line at 10am on a Saturday, but did not wait long at all. Can't go wrong, but our favorites were the egg/cheese/tomato kolache and the raspberry kolache. Great customer service too!
September 13 · Emma CarolineThis place is great. Not very expensive. The buns are filling. The sweet ones are great. The savory ones are great. Cinnamon buns were fantastic, so were the blueberry ones.
May 28 · JacKAfter weeks of seeing the lines at Pop's, we got to devour 2 of their delicious bun varieties. Their cinnamon roll and sticky bun with nuts were the best we've ever tasted! We followed their tip to heat the buns in the microwave for 20 seconds right before eating. The warmth makesthe buns melt in your mouth. Their prices are reasonable and they take cash or cards for payment. It's takeout only. They are now open Thursday-Saturday 9am til 1pm or they run out. The owners explained that they need the week days to prep and have the dough develop. We are looking forward to trying their savory bun varieties next time
