Schubert's Bakery: A San Francisco Legacy of Sweet Perfection
For over a century, Schubert's Bakery has been a cherished institution in the heart of San Francisco, serving the Bay Area with handcrafted, European-style cakes and pastries of the highest quality. Established in 1911 by German immigrant Oswald R. Schubert, this beloved bakery has stood the test of time, perfecting its classic recipes while continually delighting generations of California customers. From their legendary Swedish Princess Cake to the rich, decadent Black Forest, Schubert’s is more than just a bakery—it’s a living piece of San Francisco history, designated as a legacy business by the city's Office of Small Business.

If you're a local resident or a visitor in California looking for a truly authentic, timeless confectionery experience, a visit to this classic San Francisco pastry shop is an absolute must. The current owners, the Wenzel Brothers, who are fourth-generation bakers from Germany, continue to uphold the traditions and standards set over a hundred years ago, ensuring every slice is a taste of perfection.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I ordered the strawberry shortcake for my daughters 2nd birthday and was delighted to pick up this beautifully decorated cake. She was so excited when we presented her cake and she loved the bee, lady bug, and butterfly decorations, which were an extra special touch added by the bakery! The cake was delicious with a soft cake, fresh strawberries, and a subtly sweet whipped cream. Thank you Schubert's for helping make my daughters birthday special!
July 08 · Brita Spano VillanuevaWe dont eat sugar and we dont eat cake but we 100% eat Schubert! My hubby and I prefer no avoid sugar and wheat but when it comes to this bakery its a deal braker :) they are so fun, they even gave me an extra piece of cake to try. Love Schuberts!
September 08 · Marissa DelacruzWe stopped by Schubert's on a whim and tried their pretzel croissant and custard croissant. The croissants were ok. However, we saw a lot of locals coming in to pick up cakes so I wonder if they are more known for their cakes. They had the cakes in a variety of different sizes. I would have tried a Princess Cake but they didn't have that as an individual serving.
December 30 · Vivian AnneVisited San Francisco for my birthday - this bakery caught my eye because I'm from the NYC area and wanted something to satisfy my sweet tooth. I was NOT disappointed!!! Everything looked so delicious so I was definitely glad I didn't order just an opera cake as I had originally planned. The lemon cake was light and lemony without being overpowering - the opera cake was among the best - the tiramisu left me wanting a lot more. The staff was friendly and helpful. I had a lot of questions and didn't feel rushed despite it being busy - even the customers I encountered were as polite as the staff. Did I mention the mocha cake was the highlight of my birthday. The display was well organized and it was an overall pleasant experience. I have definite plans to go back on my next visit!!!
August 27 · Jay'sq MomHands down the best! Very helpful service and great treats. We have tried many different options and love the Black Forest cake, strawberry shortcake, chocolate eclairs, raspberry cake, and some puff that she gave us to try. The fruit tarts are delicious, but eat them right away.
