Southwest Bread Introduce
Southern California's food scene is celebrated for its commitment to fresh, quality ingredients and innovative culinary concepts, and nowhere is this more evident than in the rise of artisanal bakeries dedicated to traditional techniques. For residents across the Los Angeles area and the South Bay, a true hidden gem elevating the art of bread-making is Southwest Bread in El Segundo. This charming local spot has earned a reputation for its deep, dedicated passion for sourdough, offering a unique take on classic baked goods that has quickly made it a community favorite.
Southwest Bread is not just another neighborhood cafe; it is a predominantly savory bakehouse built on the foundation of naturally leavened, long-ferment sourdough. This focus on slow, traditional baking processes ensures that every item—from a simple loaf to their signature specialty items—delivers a superior depth of flavor and texture that commercial bread simply cannot match. Baker and owner Courtney Zbinden was driven by the idea of creating a distinctly savory bakehouse that pushes the limits of what can be achieved with sourdough. This specialization caters perfectly to the discerning California consumer who prioritizes healthy, gut-friendly options, as long-fermented sourdough can often be easier to digest for those with gluten sensitivities, without sacrificing that incredible, rustic flavor profile.
The bakery’s unique offerings, particularly the stuffed sourdough rolls and the highly-praised bagels, have garnered immense popularity, cementing its status as an essential stop in the El Segundo food map. California locals appreciate the transparency and dedication that goes into a product that requires a three-day process from start to finish. This is artisan baking at its best, blending time-honored tradition with creative, scratch-made fillings for a truly exceptional experience.
The bakery is conveniently located in the heart of El Segundo, a vibrant city known for its quaint downtown area and proximity to the coast, making it an easy stop for both local residents and those traveling through the South Bay.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I got an everything bagel with cream cheese, as well as a date night sourdough roll. The everything bagel was one of the best bagels I have ever had. It was bursting with flavor, with great texture on the outside and warm on the inside. The date night roll was amazing as well, it was packed with flavor and a great thing to have stashed away in my lunchbox for later in the day.
November 01 · Jonathan SanthouseThe best bagel I’ve ever ever ever had. So flavorful and the texture is just amazing. If you like sourdough you have to try this bagel asap. The team is very nice and helpful. The scallion cream cheese is a dream.Bought some bread to go.Lots of free street parking
July 13 · Kayla FFantastic! Very lovely people own and work in this outstanding bakery. Everything is utterly delicious. They do sell out by about 2:30 though. It’s reasonably priced too. My only gripe is that the payment machine-thingie doesn’t an option for tips so you have to leave a cash tip.
June 12 · petria seymourI come here every weekend for a bagel and a sandwhich. Prices are affordable and I love the food.Their stuffed rolls are also excellent!
August 09 · Isiah BrennerEggs were like a paste, ham was not salty, chipotle was bland and didn't taste like anything. Everything bagel had no flavor. Literally had a breakfast sandwich that didn't taste but had varied textures of paste. It took a long time for a microwaved sandwich. Everyone was nice enough but the food had not flavor. Maybe this is a vegan, salt free, spice free place? We threw out our food.
