Tompkins Square Bagels Introduce
For any true New Yorker, the quest for the perfect bagel is a lifelong pursuit. It's not just breakfast; it's a culinary institution, a cultural touchstone, and a fiercely debated topic. While the original Tompkins Square Bagels has long been a beloved downtown staple, the opening of their Upper East Side location at 1159 3rd Ave brings that same highly sought-after bagel experience closer to many more residents. This expansion means New Yorkers living uptown no longer have to trek downtown to savor what many consider to be some of the city's finest, freshly made bagels.
Tompkins Square Bagels has earned its reputation through a dedication to the craft of bagel making, visible even in their open-kitchen concept where customers can witness the boiling and baking process firsthand. More than just a simple bagel shop, this establishment prides itself on offering a diverse menu that caters to a wide range of tastes and dietary preferences, from traditional lox and cream cheese to innovative vegan and gluten-free options. This article aims to provide a comprehensive look at the Tompkins Square Bagels Upper East Side location, detailing its convenient spot, the array of services it provides, and the specific features that make it a compelling choice for any New Yorker seeking an authentic and satisfying bagel experience.
Tompkins Square Bagels' Upper East Side outpost is ideally situated at **1159 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10065, USA**. This prime location on Third Avenue places it in the bustling heart of a vibrant residential and commercial district, making it incredibly convenient for thousands of New Yorkers. The Upper East Side is renowned for its accessibility, and this particular address benefits greatly from it. For those relying on public transportation, the bakery is within easy walking distance of multiple subway lines. The 6 train has stations along Lexington Avenue (e.g., at 86th St, 77th St, 68th St-Hunter College), and the Q train, with its stations on Second Avenue (e.g., at 86th St, 72nd St), provides excellent north-south connectivity. Numerous MTA bus lines also run along Third Avenue and cross-town streets, ensuring that whether you're coming from another part of the Upper East Side or commuting from different boroughs, reaching Tompkins Square Bagels is a straightforward affair. While street parking in this dense urban environment can be challenging, as is typical for Manhattan, the extensive public transport network makes it an ideal spot for a quick breakfast or lunch pickup. Its clean storefront and strategic location make it a visible and welcoming addition to the neighborhood's culinary offerings.

- **Efficient Order Process (despite perceived redundancy):** While the multi-step ordering system might seem unconventional (order taker, then pay, then pick up), it appears to be efficient, enabling customers to get their orders relatively quickly (e.g., in 10 minutes).
- **Clean Storefront:** Maintains a presentable and clean environment, which is always a positive for customer experience in a food establishment.
- **UES Location Convenience:** Brings the popular downtown brand to the Upper East Side, offering convenience to uptown residents who previously had to travel further.
Address: 1159 3rd Ave, New York, NY 10065, USA
While a phone number was not explicitly provided in the snippets for this specific location of Tompkins Square Bagels, typical for many New York City establishments, customers often rely on online search engines or their official website for the most up-to-date contact information, including phone numbers, online ordering portals, and current operating hours. For the most efficient service, particularly for large or complex orders, checking their official website for direct contact or online ordering options is recommended.
For New Yorkers, Tompkins Square Bagels' Upper East Side location is a highly suitable and welcome addition to the neighborhood's culinary landscape, particularly for those passionate about authentic bagels. Its appeal stems from a combination of classic New York bagel tradition and a modern understanding of diverse dietary needs, all wrapped up in a convenient uptown package. The fact that a beloved downtown establishment has expanded its reach means that more New Yorkers can now access high-quality bagels without a long commute, a significant advantage in our fast-paced city.
The core strength of Tompkins Square Bagels lies in its commitment to the bagel itself. The open kitchen, allowing customers to witness the boiling and baking process, speaks to a dedication to traditional methods that result in bagels with "good texture." This transparency and focus on artisanal quality resonate deeply with New Yorkers who appreciate authenticity in their food. Furthermore, the extensive range of cream cheese flavors, various lox options (including intriguing ones like maple bourbon), and the ability to customize sandwiches ensure that every customer can find their ideal combination, whether they prefer a classic poppyseed with plain cream cheese or something more adventurous.
Perhaps most importantly, Tompkins Square Bagels stands out for its **inclusivity**. The provision of both **vegan cream cheese** and **gluten-free friendly bagels** is a game-changer for many New Yorkers with specific dietary requirements. This thoughtful approach ensures that a broader segment of the community can enjoy the quintessential New York bagel experience, a rarity in many traditional bagel shops. The option to order online for seamless in-store pickup further enhances convenience, catering to the busy schedules of city residents.
While one review noted some perceived rudeness from a staff member and an unconventional ordering process, the overall efficiency and the quality of the product often outweigh these minor concerns for many New Yorkers focused on getting their delicious bagel fix. The general sentiment that "it will do" (even if not someone's absolute favorite) often translates to a reliable, solid choice for daily consumption. In conclusion, Tompkins Square Bagels on the Upper East Side is more than just a bagel shop; it's a testament to New York's enduring bagel culture, offering high-quality, inclusive, and convenient options that make it a highly suitable and cherished spot for locals.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I have always wanted to try their bagel, but I’ve been lazy to go downtown. Good thing they opened one in UES. It’s a nice location with clean store front. However, for some reason, water was dripping constantly from the ceiling by the kitchen. It’s nice that they have an open kitchen, and was able to see them boiling and baking the bagels. Watching them frying eggs and putting sandwiches together.First, you will have to wait in line, and someone comes over to take the order and put it down on a piece of paper. Then, you hold on to that paper and wait some more to pay. Lastly, wait some more for them to call your name to pick up your order. The whole process seems redundant and ridiculous, but I did manage to get my bagel in 10 minutes or so. I guess they know what they are doing. Side note, the person taking orders was rude.I got a poppyseed bagel, toasted, with lox, plain cream cheese and capers. The bagel was great. It had good texture, and covered with poppyseed, as it should be. The lox was okay. Their lox was presliced in the fridge. I do see that they have some interesting flavors of lox, like maple bourbon. Maybe I’ll try that next time. Although the Nova was a bit fishier than usual. The caper gave it a nice salty and tangy flavor. I should have tried other flavors of cream cheese. Horseradish and dill/cucumber sounds like a good pair with lox.Overall, it was a nice bagel. Not my favorite spot, but it will do.
June 28 · Bradley CGreat place, I came for the egg everything bagel and vegan cream cheese option. This place is perfect because it is dairy free and gluten free friendly. The bagel was so good I finished the whole thing in one sitting. I ordered online and picked up in store which made the experience so seamless and easy!
June 24 · Lauren KellyThis was my first NYC bagel shop I’ve been in, so I was overwhelmed with all of my choices. There were plenty of employees there that were happy to help me with all of my questions.I ended up asking for whatever was freshest, which they told me they had a batch of raisin coming out in 10 minutes.I waited and it was definitely worth it. It was delicious and fairly priced. The scallion and bacon cream cheese perfectly complimented the sweetness of the raisins.
July 05 · Daniel DahlhausenI got an egg everything bagel with lox spread, cucumbers and onions. The bagel was perfect, crisp outside and chewy in the inside. It tasted amazing and I could tell that it was freshly made. The lox spread however, was lacking in both quantity and lox pieces. It tasted almost like regular cream cheese which I think is a little unfair for the price point. The service was good and swift, I was in and out in about 5 minutes!
May 11 · Big Marvel and ChickenThe bagel was burned (had requested lightly toasted). Seating in backyard was nice. Service was friendly and efficient.
