ZUbakery Introduce
zu bakery james beard
In the vibrant culinary landscape of Portland, Maine, ZUbakery stands as a testament to exceptional baking and dedication to craft. Recently honored with a prestigious James Beard Award in 2024 for "Outstanding Bakery," ZUbakery has quickly become a must-visit destination for locals and visitors alike. Founded by Barak Olins, the bakery, which moved to its current Clark Street location in Portland's West End in 2022, is renowned for its wood-fired ovens and a commitment to producing French-style pastries and exquisite breads that truly redefine expectations.
What sets ZUbakery apart is not just its accolades, but its unique approach to baking. Unlike many bakeries that aim to have all items ready at opening, ZUbakery embraces a philosophy of baking throughout the day. This means that while early birds might secure warm pastries, later arrivals are often rewarded with freshly baked breads, focaccia, or even savory pizzettas hot from the oven. This dynamic schedule, as noted by customer reviews, ensures the freshest possible product, though it also means that popular items can sell out quickly. The dedication to milling their own flour and using high-quality ingredients, including organic options, underscores their commitment to flavor and integrity.
Customers consistently rave about the quality of ZUbakery's offerings. From the "tasty" brioche rolls and granola to the "very nice and flavorful" pizzetta and generally "very good" bread, the passion and skill of the bakers shine through. While the line can form "fast and early," the friendly staff and the promise of exceptional, freshly baked goods make the experience worthwhile. ZUbakery is not just a place to buy bread; it's an immersive experience in artisanal baking, offering a taste of true craftsmanship in the heart of Portland, Maine.
ZUbakery is perfectly positioned at 81 Clark St, Portland, ME 04102, USA, in the charming and historic West End neighborhood of Portland. This area is celebrated for its beautiful Victorian architecture, tree-lined streets, and a strong sense of community, making ZUbakery a natural fit within its local environment. The West End is well-connected to other parts of Portland, making the bakery accessible for residents across the city and beyond.
For those arriving by car, street parking is generally available and, as noted by customers, "easy to find" in the vicinity of the bakery. While Portland can sometimes present parking challenges, the West End often offers more manageable street parking compared to the denser Old Port district. The location on Clark Street allows for a pleasant stroll through a quintessential Portland neighborhood, adding to the overall experience of visiting this award-winning establishment. For locals, its presence in the West End means convenient access to high-quality baked goods, making it a regular stop for many who live or work nearby.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We wanted to check out both the new James Beard award winners while we were in Portland so after making it through the line at Norimoto we headed over to Zu. We got in line at 10:30 on a Saturday morning and made it to the front of the line in under 15 minutes. That was the good news, the bad news was that the only items available for purchase at that time were a brioche roll, a brownie, granola and a few wheat loafs. We purchased a brioche loaf and a bag of granola. Both were quite tasty but I was disappointed that there wasn't more on offer. They said that there would be scones and focaccia available in the next 20-45 minutes so it seems our timing was just bad. Street parking was easy to find and everyone working there was very friendly. Would happily give it another go if I lived in the area.
July 12 · Maggie JLine forms up fast and early so if you’re not in line by 10 you’re probably gonna be out of luck. The pasties here are good but don’t think I would come back just for the many variations the croissant they serve here. The pizzetta was very nice and flavorful and the bread is also very good.
July 12 · DickieHands down worth the wait and a huge high point in our visit to Portland. Wonderful baked goods and customer service. Very smooth and quick line. Loved every second of the croissant and the scone so beautiful and simple but creative and rich. One of my favorite bakery experiences in the east coast.
September 23 · Pete SouvallTiny bakery on Clark St near Danforth. Divine croissants! Choc croissant best in world! My fav breads are Rustic, Buckwheat, 60% Wheat.Love love love candied orange brioche rolls sliced with cheese spread, cream cheese, butter, marmalade or apricot jam! Always find a parking spot but might have to walk a couple blocks! Well worth it!!
June 12 · C L BrysonTruly excellent bakery - the James Beard is well deserved. Not only are their pastries excellent (we got one of every croissant and the ham and cheese was a little less flaky than the others, which I guess is to be expected from the extra moisture, but not a single miss), but their breads are top notch as well. Would highly recommend coming back at 1:30ish for their focaccia. Because the reviews all warn of them running out of pastries very early in the morning, we got here at around 8:45 on Saturday morning and there was already a party in front of us, and by the time 9 rolled around, the line behind us was already quite long, so make sure you plan accordingly.
