Black Seed Bagels Introduce
In a city that prides itself on a diverse culinary landscape, the bagel holds a special place in the heart of every New Yorker. With a bagel shop on what feels like every corner, it takes something truly special to stand out. Black Seed Bagels, with its distinctive approach to a classic food, has carved out a niche for itself by offering a unique hybrid style of bagel that combines the best of both New York and Montreal traditions. This particular location, nestled in the bustling Midtown East neighborhood, has become a go-to spot for locals seeking a fresh, handcrafted breakfast or lunch that offers a departure from the typical. From the moment you walk in, the scent of wood-fired dough promises a delicious experience that is both familiar and new.
The story of Black Seed Bagels is one of thoughtful culinary innovation. Conceived by co-owners Noah Bernamoff and Matt Kliegman, the concept was to create a bagel that paid homage to their heritage while also offering something novel. They enlisted the expertise of James Beard-nominated Executive Chef and Head Baker, Dianna Daoheung, who perfected the signature recipe. The result is a bagel that is hand-rolled and then boiled in honey-infused water, a technique borrowed from the Montreal tradition that gives it a subtle sweetness. The bagels are then baked in a wood-fired oven, which imparts a crisp, slightly crackly crust and a chewy interior that is less dense than a traditional New York bagel. This careful process is what makes a Black Seed bagel instantly recognizable and a favorite among many who appreciate the nuanced difference.
For many who work or live in the Midtown area, Black Seed Bagels serves as a daily ritual. Whether you're grabbing a quick bagel with cream cheese on your way to the office or settling in for a more substantial sandwich during your lunch break, the shop offers a consistent and high-quality option. The dedication to quality ingredients is evident in every bite, from their house-made spreads to the pasture-raised eggs used in their breakfast sandwiches. This commitment to fresh, artisanal food is a key reason why many New Yorkers have embraced Black Seed as a staple in their daily lives. The shop provides a sense of community and a reliable source for a great meal in a neighborhood that is constantly on the move.
The Black Seed Bagels location at 200 Park Avenue is situated within the MetLife Building, placing it at the very heart of Midtown East. Its central position makes it incredibly accessible for a vast number of people. For those commuting via Metro-North Railroad, the shop is a stone's throw from Grand Central Terminal, making it a perfect stop for a pre-commute bite or a quick grab-and-go meal. The location is also well-served by numerous subway lines, including the 4, 5, 6, 7, and S trains, all converging at Grand Central. Additionally, various bus routes run along Park Avenue and nearby streets, ensuring that access by public transportation is straightforward from almost anywhere in the city. The walkability of the neighborhood means that if you're working in one of the many surrounding office buildings, grabbing a bagel is a short and easy trip. This prime location is a significant factor in the shop's popularity and its integration into the daily routines of the local workforce and residents.
The accessibility of the store extends beyond its proximity to transportation. The design of the shop, while catering to a fast-paced clientele, is also welcoming. It's a place where you can quickly order what you need and be on your way. However, if you have a moment to spare, the atmosphere is pleasant enough for a brief break. This balance of efficiency and a friendly environment is crucial in a neighborhood where time is often a commodity. While some reviews mention that the store can get busy during peak hours, particularly the lunch rush, many customers feel that the wait is worthwhile for the quality of the food. It's a testament to the staff's efforts to be both friendly and accommodating, even under pressure. The strategic placement of the store allows it to serve as a beacon for quality food in an area often dominated by generic, fast-food options.
Black Seed Bagels offers a comprehensive menu designed to satisfy a variety of cravings, all centered around their unique wood-fired bagels.
Bagels and Spreads: The foundation of their menu is the bagel itself, available in classic varieties like plain, everything, sesame, poppy, and multigrain, among others. These can be paired with an extensive selection of spreads, including plain, scallion, and veggie cream cheese, as well as unique options like hot honey cream cheese and lox & dill cream cheese. For plant-based eaters, tofu cream cheese in various flavors is also available.
Breakfast Sandwiches: Available all day, these sandwiches feature pasture-raised eggs from Vital Farms. Popular choices include The BEC (bacon, egg, and cheddar), The Boca (egg, cheddar, tomato, and avocado), and The Plain Jane (egg and cheddar). They also offer options with smoked turkey, pastrami, or ham.
Signature and Classic Sandwiches: Beyond breakfast, the menu includes an array of sandwiches that are perfect for lunch. The Salmon Classic, with smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, red onion, and capers, is a standout. Other options include the Black Seed BLT, Turkey Avocado, and various Reubens made with house-smoked pastrami or turkey.
Catering Services: For local businesses and events, Black Seed Bagels provides catering services. They offer bagel and spread platters, breakfast packages, and coffee boxes, making them a convenient choice for office meetings and corporate events. Catering orders typically require advance notice and can be arranged for delivery or pickup from their Bushwick location, with delivery available in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens.
Beverages and Snacks: The shop also serves a range of beverages, including drip coffee and cold brew from Stumptown Coffee Roasters, as well as selections from Bushwick Tea. Customers can also grab snacks like chocolate chip cookies and kettle chips.
The distinguishing features of Black Seed Bagels are what set it apart from other bagel shops in the city, creating a memorable experience for customers.
Hybrid Bagel Style: The signature Montreal-meets-New York style is the main draw. The hand-rolled, honey-boiled, and wood-fired bagels offer a unique texture and flavor profile that is both sweet and savory, with a satisfyingly crisp crust. This process produces a bagel that is thinner and denser than the traditional puffy New York style, and many patrons find it to be a refreshing change of pace.
High-Quality, Artisanal Ingredients: The commitment to quality is evident throughout the menu. They use pasture-raised eggs, house-smoked meats, and artisanal cream cheeses without unnecessary additives. This focus on premium ingredients elevates the entire dining experience, ensuring that every sandwich and spread is made with care.
Thoughtful Menu Options: The menu is carefully curated to include both classic and innovative choices. From the traditional lox and cream cheese to a veggie bagel loaded with fresh ingredients, there is something for every taste. The inclusion of plant-based options like tofu cream cheese and a veggie bagel caters to a wider audience, demonstrating a modern approach to a traditional food.
Efficient Service in a Busy Location: Despite its location in one of the busiest parts of the city, the staff at Black Seed Bagels strive to provide friendly and efficient service. While some customers have noted delays during peak times, many appreciate the accommodating nature of the team, especially given the high volume of orders. This ability to handle a rush while maintaining a positive attitude is a key highlight for many regulars.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Wasn’t expecting much from this place but I went because I was soooo hungry. Everyone here is so friendly and accommodating. I ordered the veggie bagel and it did not disappoint. It was incredible! Yeah it took longer to get it (a few people in front of me and it was during the lunch rush hour)… but so worth it. You guys rock!
June 08 · Rachel OakleySlowest bagel place in all of Manhattan. I’ve unfortunately been several times as my office is extremely close. It is constantly slow and the staff is constantly confused. Today I ordered a plain bagel not toasted and not only did they toast it, they burned it. So gross. This is NYC. So many better options. Please don’t do it.
April 24 · Seren LHow bad do you genuinely have to suck to mess up a “SALMON CLASSIC” and give me TURKEY AVOCADO when there are literally 2 people waiting in line? Tastes like cardboard too. First and last time in this incompetent place, absolute waste of 15 dollars
June 27 · AndreyThe bagel here was just okay. It wasn’t very toasted and had a stretchy yet dry texture. The cream cheese was also unusual, overly sweet but lacking in flavor. Despite the lack of customers, the service was a bit slow. Considering the many great bagel spots in NYC, I wouldn’t recommend this place, but it might still be worth a try if you’re curious.
December 26 · Lindsay TaylorThe bagels are so strange. I do not understand them. Not that they have weird flavors, but that this doesn’t taste like a bagel at all to me. The cream cheese tastes… odd?? I really don’t understand this bagel. Some of the staff ignored myself and a new customer coming in until one of the sweet and attentive staff members came over to help. The staff is kind, but the place seems chaotic despite it being slow.Bagels aren’t good, cream cheese is weird. Some staff is excellent, some are inattentive. Skip and go somewhere else.
