Buffalo & Bergen - Union Market Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For Washington, DC residents seeking an authentic New York bagel and a vibrant dining experience, look no further than Buffalo & Bergen at Union Market. This establishment is much more than a simple bagel shop; it’s a dynamic counter spot that expertly blends classic Jewish deli fare with a modern, high-energy cocktail bar atmosphere. Helmed by renowned mixologist Gina Chersevani, Buffalo & Bergen has become a beloved local destination, offering everything from fresh, chewy bagels to hearty deli sandwiches and ingeniously crafted beverages, all served with a touch of nostalgia and flair. These bagels are then proofed and baked on-site in DC, providing a freshness that local patrons rave about. Beyond the bagels, the menu features Jewish deli classics like Pastrami and Lox, alongside inventive, playfully named breakfast and lunch sandwiches. Adding to its unique character, Buffalo & Bergen also operates as a full-service cocktail bar, delivering creative drink options that perfectly complement the savory food offerings. It truly is a unique mashup of a bagel shop, a cocktail bar, a Jewish restaurant, and a full-fledged restaurant experience, making it a standout spot within the bustling Union Market food hall.

What is worth choosing
When visiting Buffalo & Bergen at Union Market, the sheer variety and quality make selecting a dish an exciting challenge. However, a few items stand out as essential choices, particularly for a first-time visitor.
You should undoubtedly start with one of their famous bagels. Given the care taken in sourcing and baking—using the coveted New York-style dough—even a simple Bagel With Flavored Cream Cheese ($5.50), perhaps the jalapeño or beet & horseradish flavor, will showcase the quality. For a decadent lox experience, The Original ($12.50) is the benchmark, but for those who enjoy a bold twist, the specialty Pickle Me Pink ($14.75), featuring cold smoked lox, beet & horseradish cream cheese, and pickled pink onion, is a must-try.
The commitment to high-quality Jewish deli fare is evident in the classic sandwiches. If you are looking for a satisfying, traditional lunch, the Classic Pastrami Sandwich ($19.50), boasting a half-pound of cured and smoked meat, is an excellent choice. Similarly, the Matzo Baller Soup (starting at $10.00) is the perfect comfort food, known for its lemongrass chicken stock and duck fat matzo balls.
For brunch enthusiasts, pairing a specialty breakfast sandwich like the Breakfast Reuben ($13.00), which combines pastrami and corned beef with a fried egg, is an inspired choice. No brunch is complete without a beverage from the inventive bar program. The Virgin Bloody Mary ($6.00) is noted for its award-winning house-made mix, and for those seeking the full experience, the alcoholic Lox'd & Loaded Bloody Mary is a signature item worth ordering. Finally, don't overlook the side of Live, Love, Latkes ($10.00) with bourbon applesauce and peppered crème fraîche—they are a celebrated example of the restaurant’s commitment to modernizing classics. Whether you're grabbing a dozen bagels for the week or settling in for a unique deli and cocktail brunch, Buffalo & Bergen delivers a memorable and quintessentially DC experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Hold onto your taste buds because these bagels are about to take you on a flavor rollercoaster! 🎢 Here's a little insider secret: swing by early, and you'll skip the line and dive straight into bagel bliss. Our Sunday morning adventure was the best decision ever, and trust me, you'll be high-fiving yourself too. Can we just take a moment to appreciate how unbelievably delicious and budget-friendly this whole experience is? Bagel heaven awaits! 🥯✨
February 15 · Ashley TuckerCool little counter service Jewish fare spot. Unfortunately, my bagel breakfast sandwich was over cooked, didn't have a binder, so was incredibly dry - it was a everything bagel, egg, bacon and cheese. It needed butter or something give it moisture.
June 02 · Joseph RaczynskiThere's almost two many options here! The combinations of the different bagel options and other dishes seems endless.I made the hard decision to sample (just) two items this first visit:Hey Y'all... It's a BLT (pimento cheese (cream cheese whipped with roasted red peppers, shredded cheddar, spices), bacon, lettuce, tomato) - did this one on an Everything bagel. Bacon was hearty and crispy, very tasty. All the other ingredients were fresh. The pimento cheese was the differentiator in this BLT though, couldn't beat the flavor with the bacon and the bagel in that first bite! Highly recommended. The Well-Dressed Reuben (house cured & smoked (pastrami served hot w/ sauerkraut, swiss cheese, russian dressing, a touch of "turnpiked garlic butter") - also on a Everything bagel. The pastrami is king. Really good quality meat. Splendid bagel sandwich.Definitely want to return and try more options here.Service was fine, not super friendly but no complaints.Love that you can enjoy lovely patio seating outside during beautiful spring weather like right now.
April 30 · Saminda WijegunawardenaGreat bagel sandwich. The fillings are better than the bagel itself. But the actual bagel is tasty too. The pork I had was delicious
August 12 · Nina StaatsThe food was decent, but the experience… not so much.My friend and I ordered breakfast using their self-serve screen, thinking we could sit at the counter like everyone else. The place wasn’t crowded, so we grabbed a couple of seats to wait. Turns out, when you order through the screen, it’s automatically to-go — which no one told us.We only found out when they handed us our food in paper bags and said we couldn’t eat there. They didn’t offer to plate the food or let us stay. We were just told to leave — sandwiches in hand — and the worst part? I had already tipped for service that basically didn’t exist.Honestly, it left a bad taste. Not because of the food, but because of how we were treated. Just a little heads-up for fellow travelers: if you’re planning to eat there, don’t use the screen — and maybe hold off on tipping until you know what kind of service you’re gettingUpdate:Thank you for taking the time to respond. I just wanted to clarify that we weren’t trying to be disrespectful at all (we truly thought there was no issue). At no point were we told there was a waitlist for the counter seats, and we didn’t see any signs that clearly explained the ordering and seating policy.Had someone kindly explained that there was a waitlist and that our order was considered to-go because of how we placed it, we would have completely understood and adjusted without a problem. As a first-time visitor, I believe clear communication and kind service make all the difference. Customer service matters just as much as the food, and I have to say — your response here reflects the same tone we felt during our visit. This review is simply my personal experience, I sincerely hope that future guests are met with more warmth and clarity.
