Butter Bakery Cafe Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For nearly two decades, Butter Bakery Cafe has been a beloved fixture in the South Minneapolis community, cultivating a reputation that extends far beyond its delicious, scratch-made baked goods. Rooted deeply in the Kingfield neighborhood, this isn't just a place to grab a morning coffee and a pastry; it’s a vibrant, mission-driven community hub—a Social Benefit Corporation committed to social equity, sustainability, and quality. Since opening in 2006 and moving to its current Nicollet Avenue location in 2012, Butter Bakery Cafe has integrated its business goals with profound social impact, notably by serving as a worksite and mentor for youth who have been homeless or are at risk of being homeless, in partnership with local non-profits.
Stepping inside, the atmosphere is bright, relaxed, and welcoming—a perfect escape from the hustle of the city. As one satisfied customer notes, it's a "low-key place to hang out and enjoy a treat." This friendly environment is coupled with an innovative operational model: in 2017, the cafe transitioned to a transparent, no-tipping model for pricing and compensation. This means the menu price you see is the full price you pay, reflecting their commitment to fair wages and professionalizing the food service industry, a policy highly appreciated by locals who value equity.
The menu itself is a celebration of comfort and creativity, offering a blend of a bakery, coffee shop, and full-service restaurant. From award-winning buttermilk biscuits and hearty brunch standards to unique specialty coffees like the 'Buttered Ice' and 'Northern Exposure,' Butter Bakery Cafe promises a quality dining experience. Whether you’re stopping for a quick visit, settling in for a long chat, or pre-ordering a whole pie for a gathering, this LGBTQ+ friendly spot is a Minneapolis favorite for those who appreciate good food served with a side of genuine community commitment.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Cute little bakery on Nicollet. We ordered a piece of eggnog cheesecake, a piece of mocha chocolate layer cheesecake, a carrot cake sandwich, and an eclair. The eclair and the carrot cake sandwich were phenomenal! A must try on your next visit. I don't like eggnog, but the eggnog cheesecake was unbelievably good! The mocha chocolate layer Cheescake had an unusual aftertaste that I did not enjoy, but overall, it was good. I loved the vibe of this little place, and the desserts are definitely worth a return visit.
December 17 · Louie R.P.My favorite Minneapolis coffee shop/cafe! The coffee and pastries are delicious but my favorite part is the vibe. It’s a relaxed, bright, and low key place to hang out and enjoy a treat. Also love that it has transparent pricing/no tipping 🙌🏽
July 08 · Danielle TrajanoService was great but food was really bland. $14 for an egg and cheese sandwich with meat. That’s expensive. I paid $14 for this sandwich and could not even finish it.. I could not finish it and i tried. Anyways this cafe is not worth your time.. and if you want just a cup of black coffee be ready to cough up 4 Dollars
September 26 · Vincent DurrantI love Butter Bakery!!! The food is always amazing with unique flavor combos, always fresh, and the drinks are also very good! The staff are mostly super nice and caring, but there is a barista who isn't and was kind of rude when I asked for a to-go cup one time I went :/ But other than that, totally recommend butter bakery for a date spot or meet up!! Always worth the walk, we go every week.
April 24 · Ross H. (humanitysPancakes)Top notch coffee and top notch breakfast. Staff were very friendly and it overall had a homely feel to it . If you're looking for a place to try authentic various classic styles of coffees, this is a great place to go
