Calise & Sons Bakery Introduce
calise bread
For over a century, the name Calise & Sons has been a fixture in the Rhode Island culinary landscape. Since its founding in 1908 by Francesco Calise, who brought authentic Italian baking traditions from his home in Italy to Federal Hill in Providence, this bakery has grown from a small, local operation to a major supplier of baked goods across the Northeast. Today, located in Lincoln, Calise & Sons Bakery is a cornerstone of the region's food service industry, providing a vast array of breads and rolls to supermarkets, delis, restaurants, and other businesses. This article aims to provide a clear and factual overview of this long-standing Rhode Island institution, from its historical roots to the services it provides for both retail and wholesale customers.
Calise & Sons Bakery is a large-scale operation, and its primary business model is different from a small, retail-focused bakery. The company’s products are found in grocery store aisles and on the menus of countless restaurants and delis throughout Rhode Island. The business has a rich history, and the Calise family's commitment to baking has been passed down through generations. However, the experience of a large-scale, corporate-style bakery can be very different from the personalized service of a small-town shop. This is a crucial distinction for locals to understand, as their interaction with the brand is typically through a second party, such as a grocery store or a restaurant.
The bakery's reputation is a mix of its century-long legacy and modern-day business practices. While many people enjoy the products, others, particularly wholesale customers, have experienced significant frustrations with service and reliability. This article will provide an honest look at these realities, acknowledging both the "great products" and the "terrible service" that have been reported. It is an important perspective for anyone in Rhode Island considering a partnership with the bakery or simply purchasing its products from a local store. By understanding these dynamics, local users can make an informed decision and manage their expectations accordingly.
Calise & Sons Bakery is located at 2 Quality Dr, Lincoln, RI 02865, USA. This address places the bakery in a commercial and industrial park area, which is typical for a large-scale production facility and a wholesale distributor. The location is strategically situated to provide easy access to major highways, making it an ideal hub for distributing baked goods to a wide service area. Lincoln, Rhode Island, is well-connected to other parts of the state and neighboring Massachusetts via Route 146 and I-295, which are key for the bakery's logistical operations.
Accessibility to the public is different from that of a retail bakery. While the bakery has a physical address, it is not a storefront designed for walk-in retail customers to browse and purchase items directly. Its location on Quality Drive is more suited for commercial vehicles and scheduled pickups, aligning with its role as a wholesale provider. For locals, the accessibility of Calise products is not about visiting the physical bakery, but rather about finding their products in local grocery stores like Shaw's and Stop & Shop, or in delis and restaurants that use their products.
The large-scale nature of the business dictates its location and accessibility. The facility is a modern, professional space dedicated to production and distribution, a testament to its status as one of the largest independent bakeries in New England. For Rhode Islanders, the physical address is the heart of a major local food producer, even if they never need to visit it directly.
Calise & Sons Bakery provides a comprehensive range of products and services, primarily focused on the wholesale market. With a product range of more than 140 varieties, they cater to a diverse clientele of restaurants, supermarkets, and food service companies.
The services and products offered include:
- Wholesale Baking and Distribution: This is the core service of the bakery. They produce a vast quantity of baked goods and distribute them to over 1,000 wholesale and retail customers. This service is crucial for a wide range of local businesses, from small sub shops to large supermarket chains.
- Diverse Product Line: Their extensive product list includes a variety of breads and rolls. Some popular items mentioned on their website include Bulkie Rolls, Italian Rolls, Sub Rolls, Potato Rolls, and Hamburger Rolls. They also offer different types of bread loaves, such as Italian Round Sliced Bread and Rye Bread.
- Panini Bread and Traditional Pizza Dough: In addition to a wide range of breads and rolls, they also offer specialty items like Panini bread and fresh, traditional pizza dough, which are popular with both wholesale customers and consumers who buy their products in stores.
- Retail Availability: Although the bakery itself is not a retail store, their products are available for purchase by the general public in many local supermarkets and grocery stores throughout Rhode Island.
This focus on wholesale production and a wide product line defines their role as a major food supplier in the region.
Calise & Sons Bakery has a long and storied history, but like any large business, it has both positive and negative features that define the customer experience.
Key features and highlights (both positive and negative) include:
- A Long-Standing Rhode Island Legacy: A major highlight is the bakery's history, dating back to 1908. This heritage as a family-founded business that has thrived for over a century provides a strong sense of tradition and local pride for many Rhode Islanders.
- Extensive Product Variety: The wide array of bread and roll products is a key feature. This variety caters to many different tastes and needs, from a Bulkie Roll for a sandwich to a loaf of Italian bread for dinner.
- Quality of Products: Many customers appreciate the quality of the products, praising them as "Great products." The consistent availability of their bread in stores is a testament to its popularity.
- Wholesale Service Issues: On the other hand, the reviews highlight significant issues with wholesale customer service. Complaints about orders not being delivered, lack of communication, and a lack of follow-up on issues are serious concerns for business partners.
- Product Quality Control: One detailed review expressed dissatisfaction with a specific product, the Potato Bulkie Rolls, citing issues with taste, texture, and an inaccurate product description ("Pre-sliced, but they are not!"). This points to potential inconsistencies in product quality or recipe changes that may not be well-received by some consumers.
These highlights provide a realistic and balanced view of Calise & Sons Bakery, showcasing its strengths as a producer while also acknowledging its weaknesses in service and consistency.
For those who need to contact Calise & Sons Bakery, here is the essential information:
Address: 2 Quality Dr, Lincoln, RI 02865, USA
Phone: (800) 225-4737
Mobile Phone: +1 800-225-4737
The 800-number indicates that the bakery is set up to handle a high volume of calls, likely from its many wholesale partners and distributors, rather than individual retail customers.
Calise & Sons Bakery is suitable for locals in Rhode Island primarily as a product provider, not as a retail destination. For residents who enjoy a variety of traditional and specialty breads and rolls, their products are a reliable and familiar presence in local grocery stores and delis. The heritage of the brand and its long history in the state make it a local institution that many feel a connection to, even if they only interact with its products on a shelf.
However, it is crucial for locals, especially those who own businesses, to be aware of the service issues that have been reported. While the products may be great, the experience of a wholesale partnership may not always be smooth. For the average consumer buying a loaf of bread, these issues may be irrelevant. But for someone looking for a dependable supplier for their restaurant or deli, the feedback about delivery and communication is a critical piece of information. In conclusion, Calise & Sons Bakery is a deeply rooted part of Rhode Island's food system, a source of staple baked goods for many, but its suitability is best measured by the specific needs of the customer, whether they are a casual consumer or a business owner.

Calise & Sons Bakery Reviews
I purchased (1) pkg. of Calise (Since 1908) POTATO BULKIE (Pre-sliced, but they are not!) Rolls - UPC No. 75199 01050. These rolls have NO TASTE @ all & are too soft for anything but light, cold, deli meats. They are super squishy (like trying to cut a sponge) & super duper soft, so much so that HOT grilled Hamburgers & chicken patties are out of the question. They are also NOT pre-sliced!! They are semi-Pre sliced in (3) places but are also so squishy there is notthing to cut! The rolls just disintegrate when hot hamburgers is deposited on the bottom roll. It seems to me, that USA corporate roll & bread recipes have changed considerably since (1908): cheaper ingredients, waaaaaaaaaaay too much white sugar is included in many bread recipes & these corporate type roll recipes no longer cut the mustard. For me, I need a Bulkie ROLl that will stand up to a grilled chicken sandwich wihout acting like a sponge in both cutting & eating. This pkg. of POTATOE ROLLS is NOT that product!
June 22 · Linda NorrisGreat products, terrible service for Wholesale Customers. Place orders and don't expect them to show up. Multiple times they dont deliver placed orders on weekends with no notifications from sales person with a reason. No attempts to make things right. Or another selling point is leaving your bread in the driveway in no box so that seagulls eat the bread.
