Chicken Dog Bagels Introduce
For California residents, particularly those in the San Francisco Bay Area, the search for the "best bagel" often ends in Bernal Heights, at Chicken Dog Bagels. Situated at the heart of this vibrant neighborhood, this establishment is far more than a simple bagel shop; it is an artisan bakery committed to superior technique, flavor, and ingredients. Founded by owner/operator Alex Rogers, a former pizzamaker, the concept beautifully merges old-school New York craftsmanship with San Francisco’s unique sourdough culture. The dedication to this specific style has earned Chicken Dog Bagels national recognition, firmly placing it on the map as a premier bagel destination outside of traditional East Coast hubs.
The core identity of Chicken Dog Bagels revolves around its signature sourdough-based bagels. These are hand-rolled and naturally leavened with a sourdough starter, a technique that gives the bagels a distinct, subtle sourness and an unparalleled texture. Enthusiastic customers consistently describe the product as a "spiritual experience," noting the perfect combination of a crispy, crackly crust and a dense, chewy crumb. This textural excellence often means the bagels are so good, they can be eaten plain straight out of the bag, without even needing toasting—a true mark of quality. The shop prides itself on this focused menu, which emphasizes top-tier ingredients, making it an essential destination for a Quick visit to secure a world-class Breakfast.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is it, the bagel that inspired me to write my first food review in SF. I’ve been on the hunt for the best bagel - rest assured you can stop by Chicken Dog and leave satisfied that you might’ve just found it. I’ve spent enough time in NY to know that a good bagel can give me goosebumps, and eating this bagel on a park bench in Bernal Heights Park was a spiritual experience. The crispy crust and dense crumb combine into a jaw workout that will remind you what your skull feels like and help you savor each bite for just a bit longer. I downed three bagels without skipping a beat and the horseradish shallot cream cheese was the perfect dip for each bite. I’ll definitely be back soon!
November 16 · Benjamin WeyhrauchSimply excellent bagels 🥯 perfect texture and flavor. We bought lox and cream cheese to make bagel sandwiches at home and everything was fresh and delicious. The bagels freeze well too - just slice them while fresh, put them in an airtight container, and pop them in the toaster when you’re ready to eat!
May 12 · Arianna GianolaI used to hate when people used to say, " There is no "good bagels" here in SF! (Especially those from New York and the East Coast!) I had to agree. No disrespect to Wise Sons or Daily Driver! Sometimes I don't feel like driving to Berkeley for Boichik or Beauty Bar. I want a good priced bagel and not Noah! It's $2.50 for a great bagel here!Very happy with Chickendog! Bagels are fresh and crispy outside, dense and chewy dough inside! I splurged a little bit since its the weekend and got a lox sandwich, delicious! You are able to preorder but I simply walked up a little bit after 9am and ordered. Was able to leave a happy customer after I was handed my bag of goodies few minutes later. Please check their website since they are open with limited days and hours.
January 09 · Donny PusawongI’ve recently moved to SF from the east coast and have high expectations for my bagels; thankfully, Chicken Dog meets those expectations. Bagels have a great flavor, texture, and consistency. Lookin forward to making this a typical Saturday stop.
August 26 · William ArcherGreat bagels, friendly, line moves quickly. They're not kidding when they say they sell out within a couple hours of opening. I arrived around an hour after opening and the everything bagels were sold out. I will absolutely return, and I have to wake up earlier next time!
