Cinco de Mayo Bakery offers several unique highlights that make it a standout choice for authentic cuisine in the Illinois region.
- Exceptional Savory Authenticity: The quality of the hot food menu is highly praised by customers, with the Torta de Milanesa de pollo and various Tacos being a central draw. The large, authentic selection of Tortas alone (such as the Cubana, Hawaiiana Supreme, and Rancherita) positions the bakery as a superior Mexican eatery.
- High-Quality Baking Foundation: While one specific custom cake frosting was noted as poor by a customer, the review explicitly stated that the underlying bread was delicious. This affirms the bakery's strong foundation in traditional baking, which is vital for the quality of their Tortas (using telera or bolillo) and their classic sweet bread selection.
- Specialty Drink Offerings: Beyond standard beverages, the inclusion of authentic items like Atole (a traditional warm, thick masa-based drink) and Horchata boba (a unique twist on the traditional rice milk drink) provides a compelling reason to visit for a full cultural experience.
- SNAP/EBT Acceptance: The ability to use SNAP/EBT for eligible purchases adds a layer of essential accessibility for many Illinois families, making quality Mexican food and essential bread available to a wider community.
- Operational Efficiency: The organized service model, including the use of pagers and the Quick visit design, ensures that customers receive their food and bakery items rapidly, fulfilling the promise of a convenient stop.
Cinco de Mayo Bakery is primarily recommended for its outstanding savory menu and its commitment to authentic Mexican bakery products. However, customers seeking highly detailed, special-occasion custom cakes should be advised to communicate their specific design and flavor expectations thoroughly to ensure a smooth, positive service experience, given the past reported issue with a specialty cake item's frosting and subsequent customer service resolution.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The worst experience I’ve ever had with a bakery. On Saturday, September 13. I went to go pick up a cake that cost us 90 dollars, and everything looked good. The cake was beautiful. So we went and dropped it off at my cousin’s house because that was my present to her. She cut the cake into pieces for her guests, and everybody was complaining about the flavor, saying how it didn’t taste good and it tasted like chemicals, paint, and plastic. So then I decided to try it myself, and they weren’t completely wrong. It was the worst cake I’ve ever tried. The bread was delicious. It was just the frosting. We went and returned it to see if we could get a refund. So the employees tried it themselves to see if it actually tasted bad, and they all agreed with us. Every single employee said yes that it tasted bad. They told us the owner wasn’t there, so we had to come in the next day. My mom made a phone call, and they told her that all they could do was give us store credit or we could just take the cake back and just take off the frosting. Keep in mind that the cake was returned, fully, and nobody ate it. So Monday comes and we go to the bakery, and the boss wasn’t in there; only her employees were there saying how it wasn’t true that the cake did taste good but it was all a lie and a set up because they didn’t wanna make their business look bad, and they proceeded to tell us that they won’t be able to give us credit anymore. All that they could do was just return the cake to us the way it was, so we tried to find a way to see if we can get anything out of it, and it didn’t go as planned. All we wanted was for them to be understanding, but then the boss said that the cake didn’t taste bad, which was a lie because we have the proof, but we couldn’t do much on our end, and we left disappointed with the cake that was put in the refrigerator for two days. We even asked if they could make another cake for us and they told us no.
September 15 · Angel CenicerosI went to grab some food after a long day of cleaning and doing laundry I was honestly not in the mood to dirty the kitchen I just got done cleaning 😭😂! There was no line when I showed up which was nice ! I ordered a Torta de Milanesa de pollo . Which is close to a thin breaded chicken on a “sandwich” in spanish the bread is called either a telera or bolillo. I also tried the corn in a cup, atole, and Horchata boba. I received a little pager that buzzed when the food was ready. I’ll admit I really do like a place that’s organized. It took a little under 10 minutes which was really nice because the food was actually a surprise for my husband ❣️. The Atole was delicious, the horchata was superr good the boba I’ll say it was a popping boba which I was not expecting but nonetheless it was still really delicious. The torta I did end up having some and it was really good. Would I go back, yes ! I think I’ll try some of their sweet bread and tacos next 🥰. Highly recommend 10/10. Also you pay inside of the bakery !
