Key features and menu highlights that draw patrons from across the Bay Area include:
- Signature Focaccia: The bakery’s most celebrated item is its focaccia bread, which is made from a traditional recipe where the dough rises three times, giving it a famously pillowy texture. The variety of flavors is immense, with options including:
- Tomato & Green Onion w/ cheese Foccacia (a classic with Grande mozzarella)
- Mushroom Rosemary and Garlic Foccacia (with parmesan and sea salt)
- Artichoke and cheese Foccacia (with quartered marinated artichoke hearts)

- Artisanal Breads and Sourdough: Cuneo offers an array of fresh, daily-baked loaves, including Baguette, Pan Loaf, Country Loaf (a double-weight batard), high-hydration Cibatta, 9-Grain, and savory Olive sourdough loaves. They also make their renowned, hand-rolled Grissini (Breadsticks), a product of over 50 years of tradition, often supplying local markets and delis.
- Flaky Sweet and Savory Pastries: The pastry case is filled with irresistible creations, including:
- Sweet options like Black Berry Cheese Croissant and various fruit-ribboned Scones (Blueberry, Strawberry, Peach).
- Savory options such as Ham and Cheese Croissant, Pizza Croissant (with tomato, pepperoni, and mozzarella), and a popular Jalapeño & Cheese Croissant.

The Mallegni family has owned and operated the business since 1962, ensuring that the traditional recipes and techniques—like the hand-stretching of their famous breadsticks—remain central to their craft.

What is Worth Choosing at Cuneo Bakery
For residents and visitors in the California Bay Area, choosing Cuneo Bakery is a decision to embrace history, artisanal quality, and genuine hospitality. What sets Cuneo apart is its masterful execution of traditional Italian bread. The flagship focaccia is non-negotiable; its pillowy softness, achieved through a three-time rise, is a texture rarely found outside of Italy. The array of toppings ensures that whether you crave the salty, herbal punch of a Rosemary and Garlic slice or the robust heat of the Jalapeño Cheddar, your experience will be memorable.
Beyond the focaccia, the bakery’s expertise extends to its savory offerings. The customer-praised "sourdough bun with cheddar cheese and jalapeños" (likely one of their unique, loaded bread items) or any of the savory croissants make for an excellent lunch or mid-day snack. For those planning a charcuterie board or a large family meal, the hand-rolled breadsticks (grissini) are a local legend, revered for their quality and a product of half a century of tradition in the Bay Area.
Ultimately, Cuneo Bakery offers an authentic Italian experience characterized by quality ingredients, time-honored techniques, and the incredible warmth of a multi-generational family business. It’s an essential destination for anyone in South San Francisco looking to taste a little slice of Italy, baked fresh daily.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Sometimes when you go to a place, it’s not just the delicious food but also the warm connection with the staff who make and serve the food that makes the place special and memorable. Cuneo Bakery is one such little gem in downtown South San Francisco. It’s a family owned restaurant that makes a variety of unique focaccia breads and other pastries. Everything we tasted was very good. The owners (a family of three generations from Italy) were so warm and sweet. The owner told me that their focaccia dough rises three times following a traditional recipe to give the pillowy texture . The price was incredibly reasonable. We will go back to sample more of their baked goods very soon!
September 19 · Rong MaoI stumbled upon this hidden gem and didn’t expect much at first, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everything on the menu looked delicious, and I had a hard time choosing. I ended up trying the sourdough bun with cheddar cheese and jalapeños, and it turned out to be one of the best snacks I’ve had in a long time. Simply amazing. I’ll definitely be coming back for more!
August 19 · Aldo YckA very good place if you like Italian breads and baked goods. I usually buy at least 3 whole focaccia bread every time I visit. My favorites are pepperoni, artichoke garlic, pepperoni and sausage, pesto, and feta cheese and garlic. The breads are tasty with the aroma of spices, cheeses they use and freshness of the bread. They rotate the ingredients so it never gets boring. I also love the jalapeño bread rolls, ham and cheese croissants, cookies and pastries. I never had anything I didn't like here. A small family business with a big heart. You can see lots of repeat customers always telling you what they always buy. Give them a try and you will become a regular...

February 10 · Tanvee SawantMy wife & I are originally from Chicago & now live in NC. We were on a road trip to see some of the National Parks in Arizona, Utah & California in May/June. We were in the SF area & I wanted some pastries, focaccia & real Italian bread. Was not disappointed. Everything was excellent! Reminded me of all the great Italian bakeries I had around me growing up. We usually have to make a few trips to Chicago a year to get real Italian pastries & bread to bring home. This was a great treat. San Fran has always been a great food town & we always enjoy it here & glad we visited Cuneo Bakery. Pay them a visit. You won’t be disappointed.
