Hewn doesn't just bake; they champion a sustainable food ecosystem, working directly with Illinois and Midwest farmers who stone-mill heritage and modern heritage varieties of wheat. This commitment to the source, using grains like Turkey Red, Red Fife, and Spelt, is what truly sets them apart and infuses every loaf with an incredible, unique flavor profile. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We've been driving down to Evanston to get Hewn for years and are thrilled that this location is closer. This is the best place to get bread and pastries in Lake County now. Their locally sourced grain is impressive and the flavor of their bread is sublime. I recommend popping in and trying a pastry and a coffee. I do wish they would bring their garlic knots back.
January 24 · Edward KristanBased on an article I read about this being a female owned and operated business and absolutely loving sourdough bread, I was super excited to visit this small take out bakery. The bread did not disappoint and the young man that suggested we try the blonde loaf was very friendly and super helpful. The bread was absolutely worth the trip. Nice crust in the outside, chewy and soft on inside and that wonderful sourdough taste! We also purchased an almond croissant and sticky roll which were both delicious. The products are packaged nicely in brown bags. The bread bag had the story of the bakery on it snd said fermented in Evanston which I thought was a nice touch and creative marketing strategy! Why not 5 stars? My issue with this business is that they are cashless, which I found out as I was trying to pay. The young woman cashier said rather rudely in a condescending tone “we are cashless, do you have a card?” When I said oh this is my first time here and I had no idea. She just stared at me blankly and not friendly at all. I only had cash on me but thankfully, my husband was with me and had his card.Customer service is a huge deal for me and this interaction felt awkward and unwelcoming. Almost like I was being shamed for trying to pay with cash. It might be nice to have a sign on the door or by the register that says you are “cashless”. Also, suggest adding this info on your website to alert the public of this business approach. Not sure I’ll be back based on this first impression. The bread was great, but the customer service specifically the rude cashier left me disappointed in the experience.
November 02 · Amy McWe are excited to have this bakery in the neighborhood. We have not visited their Evanston location yet, but this is the next best thing. The staff are so nice and helpful are able to answer all questions on their bakery items. We’ve made it a Saturday tradition to pick up pastries a loaf of bread for the week. The quality of their pastries is 10/10 and you can tell it was made with high quality ingredients. Worth a visit! Or two!
April 02 · Salma KerfalBreads are excellent - long-ferment, heirloom grains. Our favorite is the Blonde Country - slightly chewy, slightly sour, and excellent crumb. Great for dipping in olive oil, to using in a sandwich.Pastries are also overall very good - (and I've had almost all of them). The blueberry muffins are full of nice moist blueberries. The chocolate croissants could use a bit more chocolate bits in there so you can get some with every bite.Occasionally we'll get a croissant that's over-done, but it's rare.
October 18 · Vel NatarajanI’ve been coming here for several times now and tried many different pastries. This is probably now my favorite pastry shop in the Midwest! The morning bread and croissants are my absolute favorites. And whenever I came I was greeted with warm smiles behind the counter. Hope there’s a location in the downtown Chicago area. During the meantime I will happily support the Libertyville location whenever I’m visiting the burbs!
