Features / Highlights
Kee Wah Bakery in San Gabriel is celebrated for several standout qualities and signature products that keep customers returning year after year. These highlights solidify its reputation as a leading Chinese bakery in the region.
- World-Famous Mooncakes: Kee Wah is a globally renowned specialist in mooncakes, especially during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chinese New Year. They offer an extensive variety, including traditional lotus seed paste with egg yolks, as well as modern flavors like custard, red bean, and unique gift sets like the 'piggy in a bamboo basket'. Customers flock to the San Gabriel location to secure these prized festive treats, which are sometimes imported directly from Hong Kong.
- Signature Crispy Pineapple Bun (Bolo Bao): A perennial favorite, the crispy pineapple bun—often served warm with a slice of butter (Bolo Yao)—is one of the most ordered items. Despite the name, it has no pineapple; the name refers to the sweet, crispy, cracked sugar topping that resembles the fruit’s skin. Customers describe it as sweet, warm, and utterly delicious.
- Fresh Egg Tarts: Kee Wah’s egg tarts are consistently praised as some of the best in the area. They offer both the classic, flaky-crust Hong Kong-style egg tart and the rich, caramelized Portuguese egg tart. They are a best-seller and are noted for their smooth custard filling and perfectly executed crusts.
- Savory Pastries: The savory section is equally popular, with top-selling items like the Curry Pork Pie and Bar-B-Q Pork Pie. These pastries feature a flaky crust wrapped around house-made, savory fillings, perfect for a light lunch or snack.
- Gift Boxes and Cookies: The bakery stocks an array of beautifully packaged gift boxes, including their signature Crispy Egg Rolls (wafer-like treats in various flavors) and adorable Panda Sweetheart Cookies. These make excellent souvenirs or gifts for any occasion.
- Authentic Hong Kong Flavors: The bakery’s extensive menu, which includes items like Coconut Cream Buns, Wife Cakes, Red Bean Swirl Buns, and Hong Kong Milk Tea, provides a true taste of authentic Hong Kong street food culture and traditional Chinese pastries.

For a decadent breakfast or snack, you simply must try the Bolo Yao (Butter Pineapple Crispy Bun). This combination of the sweet, crispy topping and the rich, melting butter is a genuine taste of Hong Kong street food.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Mom needed bread so we checked this place out. Located in the San Gabriel Square, this tiny store is packed with lots of goodies. I always buy their handmade almond cookies and red bean swirl bun, so I made sure I got some. They also have moon cakes. Inside, the store is well-lighted, with regular noise level. The breads and pastries were arranged neatly, but the aisles are tight, you can’t walk freely in case you bump into another customer or the food items. There is no dine-in section, so this is purely a to-go store. You pick up a tray and select your pastries then pay up front.
September 01 · Cris PantzThere's no real atmosphere because it's not a sit down place. It's a bakery where you pick up your items, pay, and leave. There are no tables and chairs to sit at.The bakery items are all Hong Kong style bakery items like pineapple buns, sponge cake wrapped in paper, breads, pastries, moon cakes, and other goodies.
September 06 · Anita Lau McElvaneI visited your store and made an effort to communicate in Mandarin, specifically saying the word “taro.” Unfortunately, my pronunciation wasn’t very clear and wrong” and I was mocked by several staff members. I found this behavior disrespectful and disappointing. Of all the Chinese establishments I’ve visited, this was by far the rudest service experience I’ve encountered—particularly surprising given that your bakery operates as a retail business and should prioritize customer service.
