La Gran Uruguaya Bakery Introduce
For many New Yorkers, the vibrant and diverse neighborhood of Jackson Heights is a destination for authentic international cuisine. Among its many culinary treasures is La Gran Uruguaya, a long-standing bakery and restaurant that brings the rich flavors of Uruguay to Queens. This establishment has been a cornerstone of the community for years, serving as a gathering place for families and a source of delicious pastries and hearty meals. It's the kind of place where tradition and flavor are at the forefront, and every visit feels like a trip to South America. Whether you're a local who has been coming here for decades or a visitor from out of town, La Gran Uruguaya offers a memorable experience that is both authentic and welcoming.
This article provides a clear, engaging, and factual overview of La Gran Uruguaya, based on public data and customer reviews. We'll delve into what makes this spot so special, from its beloved pastries to its savory restaurant offerings. The tone is friendly and professional, designed to inform New Yorkers about a business that has clearly earned a loyal following. The reviews highlight the deliciousness of their food, with a family from Florida praising the "Uruguay parrillada and costilla soup" and a local regular celebrating the "milhojas" and "fantastic" cappuccino. This kind of consistent positive feedback is a testament to the business's quality and enduring appeal.
The dual nature of La Gran Uruguaya as both a bakery and a restaurant is a significant part of its appeal. The bakery section is a treasure trove of Uruguayan pastries and baked goods. Their "milhojas," a delicate layered pastry, is a standout item, consistently described as "delicious." The "alfajores," a type of shortbread cookie with dulce de leche, are also highly recommended. These authentic pastries, paired with a "fantastic" cappuccino, have made the bakery a cherished part of many locals' routines. It's a place where you can start your day with a sweet treat and a great cup of coffee, or pick up a dessert for a family dinner.
The restaurant side of the business offers a more extensive menu, providing a full dining experience. For those looking for a hearty meal, the Uruguayan parrillada (mixed grill) and costilla (rib) soup are popular choices. The soup is described as "delicious," and the meat dishes, while compared to other places, are still considered "good." This shows that the business is not just a bakery but a genuine culinary destination for savory, traditional Uruguayan food. The menu also includes other offerings, making it a versatile option for lunch, dinner, or a quick bite.
The experience at La Gran Uruguaya is marked by its authentic flavors and a warm, inviting atmosphere. The fact that families have been coming here for "years" speaks volumes about its consistency and community appeal. However, it is important to note a practical detail mentioned by a long-time customer: the business is "cash only." This is a crucial piece of information for potential visitors and is something a customer "do wish would change." While a minor inconvenience for some, it is a key operational detail that should be factored into a visit.
This article will continue by structuring the provided information into the requested content blocks. The reviews, though brief, offer a wealth of information about the business's strengths, from its delicious pastries to its savory meals. By focusing on these factual details, we can create a description that is both appealing and accurate. The emphasis will be on the authenticity of the food and the long-standing reputation of the establishment within the Jackson Heights community.
The bakery’s reputation for having very good "alfajores" and "milhojas" is a significant highlight. These are not just any pastries; they are traditional Uruguayan treats that hold a special place in the hearts of those familiar with the cuisine. For those unfamiliar, they are a delightful introduction to a new world of flavors. This fusion of familiar baked goods with unique cultural offerings makes La Gran Uruguaya a standout in a neighborhood known for its diverse food scene.
In conclusion, La Gran Uruguaya is a beloved local business that successfully combines a traditional bakery with an authentic Uruguayan restaurant. Its long-standing presence in Jackson Heights, combined with a reputation for delicious food and a family-friendly atmosphere, makes it a true neighborhood treasure.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Me and my family stopped by for some pastries and coffee. The milhojas was delicious as always and the cappuccino was fantastic! We have been coming here for years and always enjoy stopping by for coffee and pastries. Their alfajores are also very good. However, please note this place is cash only, something I do wish would change.
March 05 · Margaret RoblesVisiting from Florida. Great service. We had the Uruguay parrillada and costilla soup. Soup was delicious. The meat was good but rating is compared with other places we’ve been.
March 21 · P MWe've been coming to this place for years but as of late the quality is just not there anymore. For example, in the picture that I have attached to this review of the large bread with cheese, the amount of cheese has gone drastically. If that was not enough, the quality of the bread is completely gone.Another observation is that the vigilantes with cream used to have two stripes of cream. Now, it's only one in the middle, and I think they are also shorter.I understand that everything is more expensive. However, sacrificing quality is definitely not a way to keep repeat customers that have been going there for years.
September 16 · Mario from NYI've been a loyal customer for years, and I'm still hooked on their mouthwatering pastries and empanadas! Everything I've tried has been absolutely delicious. As an Asian customer who doesn't speak Spanish, I've always been getting good service by the friendly cashiers.Highly recommend this bakery to anyone looking for authentic Uruguayan treats and top-notch service!"
November 23 · Melissa HStale pastries. Skip the tres leches with peach and strawberry - the one we got tasted spoiled. They use to have some of my favorite empanadas in the city, but have gone downhill the last few visits.
