It's the kind of place where regulars are greeted by name and where the owner's passion for baking is evident in every detail. The interior is clean, bright, and inviting, a perfect spot to grab a quick coffee and pastry on your way to work or to sit and enjoy a quiet moment. The bakery's reputation for its fluffy, fresh, and not-dry roll cakes, as mentioned by numerous patrons, is well-deserved. The flavors, like taro and original, are crafted to perfection, offering a subtle sweetness that doesn't overpower the delicate texture of the cake. This balance of flavor and texture is a hallmark of the bakery's approach. In addition to their cakes, the buns, such as the red bean pineapple bun, are also a major draw. The yummy crust and good chew of the bread, paired with a filling that is not overly sweet and contains visible beans, speaks to a careful and traditional preparation method that many locals appreciate. This attention to detail in every item ensures that customers are getting a truly satisfying and authentic baked good. The variety of options available, from sponge cakes in flavors like strawberry and ube to the classic Chinese bakery items, ensures there is something for everyone to discover and enjoy.
What makes Modern Coffee House particularly special is its ability to cater to a diverse clientele, from senior citizens who fill the tables early in the morning to younger crowds discovering the spot on Instagram. This blend of customers highlights its role as a true neighborhood hub, a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together over a shared love of good food and a comforting atmosphere. The affordable prices for both their baked goods and beverages, such as coffee or milk tea, further solidify its status as a local favorite, offering great value without compromising on quality. The fact that it is slightly away from the main mobs of tourists around Canal Street also contributes to its authentic, local charm, making it a perfect spot for New Yorkers who want to explore a more genuine side of Chinatown.
While the name "Modern Coffee House" suggests a focus on coffee, the bakery side of the business is undoubtedly the star of the show, earning it a special place in the hearts of New Yorkers. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Modern Coffee House/Strawberry Bun Cake:The stairway entrance kind of reminds me of the stairs at Wo Hop when I previously explored Chinatown. This bun cake is light and spongy. It wasn’t too overpowering or sweet and it’s definitely an acquired taste.
June 27 · Jeff T. CriticI love their roll cake slices! I’ve had the original and the one in the photos is the taro. Both were so fluffy, fresh and not dry!I also got a red bean pineapple bun, the crust on top was yummy and the bread had a good chew. The pocket of red bean filling wasn’t in the center so I had to take a couple of bites till I reached it. The filling itself wasn’t too sweet and was a paste that you could see the beans (I prefer this over overly smooth paste).I’ll keep coming back here!!
June 28 · Cheyenne YuCute little bakery that I discovered from Instagram (thanks nom_life!) The owner is super sweet and attentive, asking what I'd like as soon as I stepped foot inside. Service is quick. Lots of baked options. I am a sucker for sponge cake so got the original, strawberry, and ube. All were delicious. So spongy and soft. There is also a surrounding layer that is nice and eggy. Inside is clean and bright. I went early at 8am and it was already almost full, can't wait to come back!!!
March 24 · Aa LTiny neighborhood bakery with coffee or milk tea for just $1.50 (!!), and fresh brioche-style Chinese bakery items ($1.50) like bbq pork bao or scallion twist. Senior citizens fill up the tables first thing in the morning, and then there's usually seats free later in the day. New, clean and bright, in the E Broadway section of old Chinatown a little bit away from the mobs of tourist around Canal. Cash only.
March 22 · Brooklyn is HomeI want to order a cake! I went there 5 times! I still couldn't order one! The cashiers said she didn't know the price! - she said she would ask the chef, and the next time she said she would ask the boss! I went there 5 times! In the end, I still don't know how much it costs to order a cake? It's so funny!
