Modo Hawaii Introduce
For residents and visitors in California looking for a truly unique treat and a taste of the islands, look no further than MoDo Hawaii. More than just a donut shop, this local favorite in San Francisco brings the vibrant flavors and aloha spirit of Hawaii right to the Sunset district. It represents the perfect culinary fusion that California foodies love: a combination of Japanese-inspired chewy donuts, fresh Hawaiian poke, and creative, flavorful coffee drinks. MoDo Hawaii offers a refreshing escape with its distinct menu that perfectly caters to both your sweet cravings and your lunch needs. The popularity of the mochi donut phenomenon, which originated in Hawaii and Japan, has taken California by storm, and MoDo Hawaii stands out as a premier destination for this delightful pastry.
Mochi donuts are a culinary hybrid, combining the traditional American fried donut with the Japanese glutinous rice cake, mochi. This unique blend results in a pastry that is light, fluffy, and features a signature chewy, bouncy interior—often described as "mochi-mochi"—with a crispy exterior. This texture is a major reason why mochi donuts have exploded in popularity across the United States, especially in California, a state known for embracing diverse and innovative food trends. At MoDo Hawaii, these distinctive donuts are baked fresh daily and presented in the traditional 'pon de ring' shape of connected small balls, making them easy and fun to pull apart and share.
But MoDo Hawaii offers a complete meal experience. Beyond the irresistible dessert, the shop also serves up authentic Hawaiian-style poke bowls. This makes it an ideal spot for locals who are seeking both a savory, fresh lunch and a high-quality dessert and coffee pairing. The menu showcases a thoughtful selection of products that reflect a true Hawaiian-Asian fusion, utilizing popular island-inspired ingredients like ube, pandan, and lilikoi across both the sweet and savory offerings. For anyone in the Bay Area, making a stop at MoDo Hawaii is a guaranteed way to experience a delicious, culturally rich food adventure.

MoDo Hawaii is a must-visit destination in San Francisco for several reasons, making it an excellent choice for any Californian looking for a standout culinary experience.
First, the mochi donuts are genuinely top-tier. As noted by one avid mochi donut fan, MoDo's offerings are "Chewy with a slight crunchy on the outside" and the flavors are "aunthentic and soooo good!" If you are seeking the definitive mochi donut experience—that delightful, bouncy, and chewy texture that the treat is famous for—MoDo Hawaii is consistently cited as having some of the best in the Bay Area. The Black Sesame Mochi Donut is a particular highlight, celebrated for its authentic, creamy flavor, while the Lilikoi Mochi Donut is perfect for those craving a tart, sweet, tropical burst. Their commitment to using real, high-quality ingredients shines through in every unique flavor.
Second, the shop's strategic addition of Hawaiian Poke bowls is a game-changer. It provides a fresh, savory counterpoint to the sweet donuts, allowing customers to enjoy a full, balanced meal from one location. The poke bowls, whether you choose the classic Shoyu Poke Bowl or the bold Spicy Poke Bowl, are praised for being "super fresh and so big," offering great quality and portion size for the price. The option to grab a Half & Half Poke Bowl is ideal for those who want to sample the best of both worlds.
Finally, the specialty drinks tie the whole experience together. The menu features an exciting range of Soy Lattes and Coffees, many infused with unique flavors like Ube and Pandan. The Ube Soy Latte, in particular, is a creamy, colorful, and highly recommended beverage that perfectly pairs with the island theme and the mochi donuts. Whether you’re looking for a bold espresso shot in your Brown Sugar Shaken Espresso or a unique non-coffee option, the beverage menu is as innovative and high-quality as the food. The combination of incredible, fresh-made mochi donuts, savory poke, and unique, friendly service makes MoDo Hawaii a true California gem and a necessary stop in San Francisco.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1New mochi donut shop on Taraval in the Sunset. As a local I walked by and saw their soft/trial opening on 8/26 and couldn't resist the freshly baked mochi donuts and sweet flavor toppings. Donuts were moist and chewy and the natural sesame coating is delicious! Friendly staff and I will definitely be back to try more flavors.
August 26 · Wen WenSince their soft opening I have been stopping by for a sweet treat. The whole team has been amazing but a special shout out to Bel, Manuel and Kevin (the ones I’ve met), for always going above and beyond to make everyone feel appreciated.
September 16 · Michael GutierrezThe Matcha and Churro flavors are fantastic. I stopped in on Saturday 8/16 and experienced a trial shift/soft opening sort of thing and was blown away by the flavor profile. I'm super excited to have this spot on Taraval street.

July 29 · Alexander CoughlinPopped in for an early afternoon meal and sweet treat. We were not disappointed. The Mochi donuts were made fresh. We got chocolate, cookies and cream, churro, lilikoi and macha and they were delicious! Still warm when we ate them. Cut them into pieces and we all shared. The texture was fantastic and the taste divine.I got the spicy poke bowl and the fish was so fresh and the spicy level was perfect. Too large a serving for one meal so my dinner is set. This neighborhood is so lucky to have this gem. We will definitely be back
