Pookie Crack Cakes Introduce
Pookie Crack Cakes is more than just a bakery; it is a true Chicago phenomenon that has successfully blended family tradition with a unique, attention-grabbing brand. Located in the vibrant Bronzeville neighborhood, this establishment is renowned for its signature "Crack Cakes"—a term of endearment and an honest description of their intensely addictive, moist, and heavily-glazed bundt cakes. The concept, which owner and founder Dedra Simmons developed from a cherished great-grandmother's recipe, has created a loyal following that frequently results in lines forming down the block well before opening hours.
The bakery’s mission is simple: deliver premium, homemade, and flavorful cakes using high-quality ingredients, including all natural ingredients. Dedra Simmons and her family take pride in a hands-on approach, mixing and baking hundreds of cakes daily to meet the overwhelming demand. This commitment to quality over quantity is what has fueled their success, transforming a passion project started from home in 2014 into a beloved brick-and-mortar South Side institution. Pookie Crack Cakes is a proud **LGBTQ+ friendly** and **Transgender safespace**, fostering a sense of community and warmth that complements the delicious desserts.
The cakes, often sold as individual portions, are celebrated for their soft, moist texture and the special process where a buttery rum glaze (or another flavorful sauce) is poured into the cracks of the bundt cake, allowing it to fully seep in and deliver an intense burst of flavor—a Southern-style tradition that has captivated the Illinois dessert scene. Customers often travel from far and wide, domestically and even internationally, just for a taste of the hype.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I had the pleasure of going to Pookie's Crack Cakes in July while I was home visiting family. The two brothers that work there are delightful. I initially bought an Oreo cake that was delicious! My cousin bought the peach cobbler cake and when I tasted it I knew that I had to come back and get one before I left Chicago. I also tried the lemon cake which was amazing and I'm not even a big fan of lemon cake. I left Chicago with 5 cakes that I bought for myself and friends. They use all natural ingredients which makes their cakes taste amazing! I've never had cakes as good as theirs. They also sell fruit drinks made with all natural ingredients and sweetened with monk fruit. l bought one of each flavor both times that I was there. Pookie's will be a permanent part of my annual trip home to Chicago.
September 18 · Iretta SimpsonCustomer service is great. The peach cobbler is a little over rated. The strawberry lemonade is super super sweet. If you like that type of sweetness then you'll like it. Surprisingly the butter pecan praline was the best. Taste like it came right out of the oven. I can say i got my experience.
May 15 · Mo WillThe watermelon green apple juice might be one of the greatest drinks I’ve ever tasted in life and it’s all natural with no added sugar which I love. As for the cake it was really good it was a bit tooo sweet but still very good! I’m definitely going back for the juice!
August 29 · Sam BennettLives Up to Their Name For sure.I bought their Strawberry Lemonade Cake first. As You can see I decided to taste a “piece” before I pulled off & Literally went back in to get the Caramel Drip Flavor. Absolutely Delicious!
August 14 · Raquisha HesterOk so as far as my weekday visit (I can only imagine the weekend), it was an "experience." Numbers are given out prior to opening at 11am. After receiving your number, you then get in line before 11 in order of the number received. I arrived at 9:30am. I received my number at 10am.Once I made it in, I received free shots of Lemonade that they have for sale. I tried The Berry Hibiscus and it was good. As for the cakes, The Strawberry Lemonade one (the icing) was soooo sweet. Eh.....The Pineapple Paradise (a popular one) was alright. I think the reviews from folks saying how moist the cakes are is because of the juice the cakes sit in. Nothing made me wanna "slap" someone for being THAT good. I'm glad the business is booming and that I checked it off my list. I say try them at least once for yourself. Good luck! I don't have to go back.
