So Yen Introduce
Introduction / Overview: A Sweet and Savory Sensation in St. Paul’s Lowertown
So Yen is far more than a typical 'Bakery'; it is a culinary destination in the heart of Lowertown, St. Paul, specializing in high-quality, handcrafted goods that marry traditional baking with unique, often Asian-inspired, flavors. This locally-owned establishment has built a passionate following among Minnesotans, famous for its signature brioche donuts that are praised for being "fluffy/pillow but also dense," and filled with creams that are notably "not too sweet." The owner, Yen Fang, started the business with a dream, bringing a much-needed specialty dessert experience to the community.
What truly sets So Yen apart is its dual focus: a menu that perfectly balances sweet indulgence with comforting, savory nourishment. Alongside the gourmet donuts, the bakery offers authentic, hearty items like Congee (rice porridge) and a unique Hmong Sunrise Sandwich. This combination caters beautifully to the Minnesota palate, providing a satisfying Breakfast or quick midday treat. Because every brioche donut is hand-rolled and made fresh in small batches, the demand is often high, underscoring the bakery’s reputation for exceptional quality and freshness—a commitment local users deeply appreciate. It has quickly become one of the must-visit spots in the Twin Cities for those seeking an elevated and imaginative bakery experience.

Features / Highlights: The Perfect Sweet and Savory Balance
The primary appeal of So Yen lies in its unique menu items, which offer a refreshing departure from standard bakery fare. This innovative mix of comfort food and gourmet desserts is the reason lines often form quickly in Lowertown.
- Gourmet Brioche Donuts: These hand-rolled donuts are the centerpiece, lauded for their super-fluffy, yet dense texture, and are available in creative, rotating flavors like Orange Cream, Blackberry Bliss, and PB&R (Peanut Butter and Raspberry).
- Cult-Favorite Savory Congee: Customers consistently call the rice porridge (Congee) "delicious and highly recommended," noting it is "perfect for winter." Options like Pork Congee ($14.50) and Chicken Congee ($13.00) provide a hearty, authentic counterpoint to the sweet menu.
- Unique Cultural Fusion: The bakery features items like the savory Hmong Sunrise Sandwich ($12.00) and the Kuma Egg (a savory egg salad donut), which infuse familiar bakery items with global flavors, appealing to the diverse Twin Cities food scene.
- Balanced Sweetness: A key customer highlight is that the creams and fillings are deliberately "not too sweet," a quality that appeals to many who prefer a more refined, less sugary dessert.
- Small Batch Freshness: The commitment to hand-rolling and making goods fresh in small batches each morning results in a premium, high-quality product that often leads to early sell-outs, a sign of its immense popularity.

What is Worth Choosing: The Ultimate Weekend Treat Destination
For any Minnesotan in search of a truly unique and high-quality weekend indulgence, So Yen in Lowertown is an absolute must-visit. The decision to choose So Yen is based on three core strengths that resonate with the local food culture: Specialized Quality, Culinary Diversity, and Authenticity.
Firstly, the quality of the brioche donut is superior. The dedication to hand-rolling and small-batch production results in a donut with a remarkable texture—fluffy, yet satisfyingly dense. Customers consistently highlight that the fillings are perfectly balanced and "not too sweet," which is a significant preference for many gourmet dessert consumers. This is high-end pastry work, not just a simple sugar rush.
Secondly, So Yen’s ability to flawlessly execute both the sweet and the savory is a rare find. The rave reviews for the comforting, flavorful Congee prove that the bakery is a standout source for an authentic and delicious savory breakfast or brunch. The fusion items, while sometimes experimental (like the Kuma Egg donut, which wasn’t for everyone), show a commitment to innovation and honoring diverse culinary backgrounds, something that enriches the St. Paul dining scene. The ability to grab a bowl of warm, delicious rice porridge and a gourmet donut in the same spot is an unbeatable offering, especially on a cold Minnesota morning.
Finally, the Lowertown location and the lively weekend atmosphere add to the experience. Being near the market means the "environment was absolutely incredible," transforming a quick food run into a pleasant social outing. While there can be lines, as reported by customers, the consensus is that the high-quality, fresh, and often unique flavors of the donuts and congee are "well worth the wait." So Yen offers an authentic, delicious, and distinctly St. Paul culinary experience that local residents should absolutely prioritize.

June 01 · Chong XiongCongee and donuts are awesome!!! 5/5. Fluffy/pillow but also dense. I think I could go with less filling though. The egg sandwich donut wasn’t my cup of tea, didn’t like the combination of Flavours.Laab fries were okay. Laab seasoning goes better on protein.I’d come back for the congee and donuts. Have yet to try the hmong sausauge sandwich.
September 07 · xa vangSo Yen’s D🍩NUTS are the BEST!! August flavors are yummiest we cannot wait for September’s flavor! Please have an indoor tables and chairs soon😊 This place is a must to go!! WE LOVE IT♥️
August 30 · Josephine PenaMy favorite donuts I’ve ever had. They were the perfect flavor and sweetness! I loved the fruit and cream cheese flavor mixes. Even though there’s only four flavors, they switch out every month. The Hmong breakfast sandwich was incredible as well! The staff were really nice and there’s a big room outside with tables to eat at. The only downside is parking around the area is very limited, and the entry door is hard to find. A sign on the side window by the farmers market pointing to the front would be helpful!
March 02 · Jenae CarlsonWe got our food fast, and everything was very flavorful. The lychee tea was very good, and the donuts are not too heavy. By the time we got there (9:30am) some of the items were sold out.
