What is Worth Choosing
For anyone visiting Star Bagels, the choice comes down to whether you prioritize the foundational classics or one of their substantial specialty items. The local reputation often steers customers toward a few standout menu items that have become community favorites.
The Bagel, Egg, and Cheese is perhaps the most recommended item and is an absolute must-try. This simple, classic breakfast sandwich is celebrated for its perfectly cooked components—a fresh bagel, molten hot cheese, and generous egg portion—often described as the quintessential comfort breakfast. It is considered an excellent value at its price point, particularly when compared to similar items across the city. For those looking to add a meat option, upgrading to the version that includes Ham, Bacon, or Sausage creates a truly hearty and memorable morning meal that one reviewer even likened to an "NYC bodega" experience.
If you are looking for a simple classic, the Bagel Only with one of their varied and flavorful cream cheese smears—such as the Scallion or Garlic Herb—is highly recommended. The bagels themselves are frequently praised for their desirable texture: soft and fluffy with a pleasant chew. Furthermore, for those seeking a lunch option, the traditional Deli Sandwich selections, like Smoked Turkey or Pastrami, provide a solid, no-frills meal on a fresh bagel. The shop also stocks affordable pastries, like the Donut and Cinnamon Roll, making it a great place for a little sweet treat alongside your coffee.
Ultimately, the main reason Star Bagels is worth choosing is its unrivaled position as an affordable and reliable bagel shop in San Francisco. It consistently delivers on the promise of a delicious, quick, and budget-friendly meal, making it an indispensable part of the Polk Street food scene for locals who know that great flavor doesn't have to come with a premium price tag.

August 24 · Maggie MaCan't tell you how the bagels are because I never made it past the rude older Asian lady with short hair behind the counter. As others have mentioned, she has TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE.I ordered a Lox Sandwich on a Plain Bagel with smear, onions, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Pretty standard order at most bagel shops. She slapped so little smear on my bagel that that it didn't even cover 3/4s of it then got upset when I asked for more. She got upset when I reminded her about the cucumbers and yelled at me that they were out. And then she put the tiniest little piece of salmon on the bagel and again fussed when I asked if it was possible to get even a tiny bit more. So now I'm paying full price for a sandwich which doesn't even have half of what it comes with and I'm being yelled at like a kid.I agreed to pay for it and that I just probably won't come back and that's okay, but then she started ranting and taking the sandwich apart so I left.
August 28 · Bruce LeroyI was ready to walk down the block to another, trendier shop, but boy am I glad I stopped into Star Bagel! The owner was SO nice and the bacon, egg, and cheese was the best I've had since living in NYC. And the prices are likely the best you'll find in the Bay Area.Don't let the modest aesthetic turn you away. What a gem!
July 14 · Joshua GlasnerJust happened to be in the area for business and I was craving some breakfast, looked this place up and decided to give it a try! Local family owned, they have a huge selection of breakfast, bagels, croissants, and lunch items, sandwiches, etc. I got a bagel and a ham egg cheese croissant. So good!! I highly recommend for a quick and delicious breakfast or lunch. The employees are super nice. I love how they cut the bagels and sandwiches in half too.
August 05 · Otto WeirichQuaint, friendly, delicious and affordableCame here for breakfast on a weekday (~9am). The staff, which I believe is the owner, was very nice. We got the sausage, egg and cheese on a croissant along with a couple lattes and a donut. They all tasted great. He got our special requests right and marked them on the sandwiches. Would get breakfast here again next time I'm in the area.
