Specializing in delectable Italian pastries and cakes, Stella Pastry offers a taste of Old World tradition that is increasingly rare to find.
The moment you step inside this charming bakery on Columbus Avenue, you are greeted by sparkling display cases brimming with confections that are both a feast for the eyes and the palate. Whether you’re planning a special celebration, looking for a satisfying breakfast pastry, or simply craving an afternoon coffee and treat, Stella Pastry & Cafe delivers a truly delightful and historic California experience.
For decades, Stella Pastry has served generations of California families, becoming synonymous with celebratory moments like weddings, baptisms, and communions. The bakery's enduring legacy is built on its commitment to classic Italian recipes, many of which were brought over from Genoa. This dedication ensures that every bite transports you straight to a quaint Italian cafe. It’s a local treasure that embodies the spirit of San Francisco’s Little Italy, and its signature creations are renowned throughout the state.
One of the key elements that sets Stella Pastry apart is its unwavering focus on flavor balance. Many customers consistently praise the desserts for being "not overly sweet," a refreshing characteristic that allows the true, deep flavors of the ingredients—like strong espresso, creamy ricotta, or zesty fruit—to shine through. This careful balance ensures that even the most decadent-looking treats are surprisingly light and enjoyable, making it easy to see why this spot is a top-rated destination for dessert lovers across California.
The friendly staff and cozy atmosphere only add to the appeal. Stepping into the shop, with its nostalgic, old-world Italian charm, feels like taking a small vacation. The bakery provides an inviting spot for a quick visit or a leisurely moment to savor your pastry with a fresh cup of coffee. Features / Highlights
Stella Pastry & Cafe is celebrated for several unique and compelling features that have solidified its status as a Northern California landmark:
- The Signature Sacripantina: This is arguably the most famous and highly-acclaimed dessert at Stella Pastry. The Sacripantina is a Northern Italian creation of sponge cake soaked with rum and layered with rich zabaione cream (a boozy custard made with egg yolks, Marsala, and sherry). It is known for its light, ethereal texture, perfect balance of sweetness, and subtle, sophisticated alcoholic undertones. Stella Pastry holds a special place in the history of this dessert in San Francisco, with its recipe being a trademarked secret.
- Authentic Italian Pastry Tradition: Operating since 1945, the bakery maintains a strong commitment to traditional Italian-American sweets, using original, time-tested recipes imported from Genoa.
- Highly Praised Tiramisu: Many customers hail Stella Pastry's Tiramisu as one of the best in San Francisco, noted for its strong coffee flavor, perfectly balanced sweetness, and layers of vanilla sponge cake, espresso, rum, and mascarpone cream.
- Wide Assortment of Treats: The menu offers an extensive range of delights beyond the signature cakes, including classics like crisp Cannoli with sweetened ricotta and chocolate chips, rich Choco Truffle cake, various Cheesecakes (including Plain, Strawberry, and Blueberry), and fresh Fruit Tarts.
- A Local Institution: The bakery is a family-owned and operated institution, beloved by the local community and a must-see destination for tourists seeking a genuine piece of San Francisco history and cuisine.
- Quality and Balance in Flavor: The desserts are frequently praised for their expert balance—being rich and flavorful without being overly sugary, a key distinction from many modern bakeries.

What is Worth Choosing
For a first-time visitor or a returning customer looking for a truly special treat, the choice at Stella Pastry & Cafe can be tough, but a few items stand out as essential California culinary experiences.
The ultimate, non-negotiable choice is the Sacripantina. This dessert defines Stella Pastry's legacy. As noted in customer reviews, this cake is "a blessing" for those who want the creamy, layered indulgence of a dessert like Tiramisu but with a delicate, rum-and-zabaione profile instead of strong espresso. The light, airy sponge cake soaked in rum and zabaione cream is a texture and flavor masterpiece that you won't easily find anywhere else in the state. Available as a slice or a whole cake (6", 8", or 7x10" Square), securing a piece of this classic Northern Italian confection should be your primary mission.
Next on the list is the Tiramisu. While the Sacripantina is unique, Stella's Tiramisu is often called the best in San Francisco. Known for its distinct and strong coffee flavor, the Vanilla sponge cake is soaked in espresso and rum, layered with high-quality mascarpone cream. It is the perfect choice for the classic Italian dessert enthusiast, balancing richness with a robust, authentic coffee kick.
For chocolate lovers, the Choco Truffle or the Fedora Slice are highly recommended. The Choco Truffle cake is celebrated for its intense chocolate flavor and smooth, creamy ganache filling. The Fedora Slice, a devil's food cake soaked with rum and filled with Italian pastry cream and fresh whipped cream, provides a rich, complex flavor that is both decadent and satisfying.
Finally, for those who enjoy fresh, fruity flavors, the Strawberry Shortcake is a delightful surprise. One customer was pleasantly surprised to find that its not-too-sweet frosting and fresh ingredients rivaled high-end Japanese cakes, making it a light and perfect selection. Alternatively, the Cannoli, with its crisp shell and slightly sweetened ricotta filling, offers a traditional, handheld Sicilian experience that is a benchmark for Italian pastry excellence.
Ultimately, whether you are picking up a whole Sacripantina for a family gathering, a slice of Tiramisu for an afternoon treat, or an assortment of their famous Cookies By The Pound for a party, Stella Pastry & Cafe provides a delicious link to San Francisco's rich Italian past. It's a true California treasure that continues to satisfy sweet cravings across the Bay Area and beyond. Stop by and taste the tradition for yourself!

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Went to South Bay to grab a Japanese strawberry cake, but they ran out, so when we were back in SF, we saw this place on Google and decided to grab a strawberry cake from here.I was pleasantly surprised. The frosting is not heavily sweet like other bakeries. It tasted just like the Japanese cakes that I’ve gotten. The staff was really nice and patient with us asking many questions.I would stop by again for other cakes.
July 13 · JackMixed Berry Tart > Tiramisu > Fedora SliceEverything was really enjoyable, and I don’t think you could go wrong with any three of these dishes. My main complaint is that I thought the presence of coffee was very light in the tiramisu, but this may be better for people who are planning on having this as a late-night snack. Also the bottom of the tart was semi-frozen, but the top of this tart was absolutely delectable.
April 07 · Austin PattonNice dessert spot with a great selection of treats, including Napoleon and Custard Cream Horns. We haven’t tried much there, but it’s a solid choice if you're craving something sweet.
March 26 · Katherine MelnykAll of the pastries are very good. Tiramisu is my favorite. I love the coffee as well. Can’t wait to come back for more.
July 19 · Guomin WuEverything a cannoli should be and more! Super creamy and smooth filling, but not too sweet, a healthy amount of tender chocolate chips throughout, perfectly light and crisp pastry with a sprinkle of powdered sugar. This is what I think of when I think of a perfect cannoli. At first I thought the price was a little steep, over $5 for one cannoli, but after eating I decided it was 100% worth it and bought three more to take home. Highly recommend!
