Sun Street Breads Introduce
Introduction / Overview
Sun Street Breads has long been celebrated as a cornerstone of the South Minneapolis food scene, combining the precision of artisan baking with the comforting flavors of an exceptional neighborhood cafe. Located right on Nicollet Avenue, this establishment has garnered a reputation far beyond its Kingfield origins, built on a simple philosophy: start with the best possible ingredients, master traditional methods, and dedicate the time and effort required to create truly superior products. This commitment to craft is evident in every loaf of their renowned bread and every delicate layer of their pastries.
The style of baking at Sun Street is often described as a masterful blend of traditional American comfort with a rustic, European flair—or as one fan beautifully put it, "rustic French." This is the place for those who appreciate the simple alchemy of flour, water, yeast, and time, resulting in breads like their Kingfield Sourdough and the Norwegian-inspired Bergen Bread. However, the cafe offers much more than just bread; it functions as a full-service breakfast and lunch destination.
Known for its bustling atmosphere, especially during the morning rush, Sun Street Breads is undeniably a local favorite. Customers consistently praise the quality and freshness of the food, highlighting the flaky, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying pastries, which offer a refreshing departure from dry, mass-produced counterparts. From their award-winning biscuit sandwiches to the much-anticipated Thursday Night Pizza, this spot offers a delightful, unpretentious dining experience for Twin Cities locals, making it an essential stop whether you’re rushing to the airport or enjoying a leisurely neighborhood brunch.

Sun Street Breads Menu
Bakery
- Kingfield Sourdough $5.50
flour, water, whole wheat flour, rye flour, salt, cracked wheat. This is our daily bread, the workhorse if you will. Named for our neighborhood because this is where our sourdough starter began and where it thrives, this hearty sourdough incorporates whole wheat flour for an extra layer of flavor. We feed our sourdough to favor the production of lactic acid (which is more buttery) rather than acetic acid (more vinegary), so it isn’t an outrageously sour bread.
- Bergen Bread $6.50
flour, water, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, flax meal, cracked wheat, rolled oats, rolled rye, salt, rye malt extract. Once upon a time, head baker Solveig wanted to be a weaver, and spent 6 months in Bergen Norway learning the craft. While there, she discovered the rustic hearty breads of the region and fell in love. Our Bergen bread is an homage to the traditional country loaves in Norway, and is filled with wholesome whole wheat and pumpkin seeds, and topped with steel cut oats and sunflower seeds.
- Lunchbox Oatmeal $7.50
flour, water, steel-cut oatmeal, whole wheat flour, brown sugar, butter, salt, yeast. This is as close as we come to white sandwich bread. Only ours is chock full of steel-cut oat and whole wheat goodness, making it tasty and wholesome but still soft and perfectly sliceable. Solveig invented Lunchbox bread when her daughter started kindergarten, because she grew up eating her mom’s homemade oatmeal bread, which was her favorite—and the closest thing she ever got to white bread!
- Baguette $3.00
flour, water, salt, yeast. Ours is the classic Parisian baguette. When done right, it’s incomparable and sublime. And the Parisians invented how to do it right. The result is a crisp crackly crust, with a soft but still chewy interior that is shot through with air pockets. It the most versatile bread possible because it goes great with everything, but you have to eat it quick because it’s not made to last.
- Challah - Fridays Only! $5.50
flour, water, eggs, sugar, canola oil, salt, yeast. Challah is one of those breads that calls for a very traditional recipe and technique. The origin of challah comes from Jewish tradition, but that certainly doesn’t stop the rest of the world from enjoying this beautiful style of soft, egg-enriched bread. Our challah is a 4-braid loaf, and is available on Fridays. Turbans (with or without raisins) can be ordered for Rosh Hashanah.
- Pastries $3.50
We offer a wide selection of pastries baked fresh daily, ranging in price fro $2.75 - $4.00. We make our raspberry cream scones, downtowners, turnovers, sweet potato chevre bundles, laugen croissants, and specialty biscuits every day, as well as a rotating selection of danish and laminated dough pastries. On Wednesdays, we feature raised glazed donuts, and on Sundays we have Cardamom twists.
- Cookies $2.00
We have a variety of individually packed and multipacks of cookies and other baked treats, including chocolate blondies, chocolate-almond macaroons, pecan shortbread cookies, graham crackers, and our famous Sun Street granola.
- Crackers $5.00
Our selection of crackers currently includes: Scandinavian Style Cracking Bread, Svalbard Seed Crackers, and Barley Beer Crackers.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Easy 5 stars! No doubt about it. After hearing great things about Sun Street for years, I finally stopped by today after yoga. I’m so glad I did. I got 4 pastries for my husband and I to split, and we devoured them. We tried the downtowner, raspberry cream scone, cardamom role, and strawberry pastry (don’t remember the exact name). Each pastry was fresh, flavorful, flakey, and incredibly satisfying. I’d describe the style as rustic French. Nothing was tough or dry. I’ve had a lot of dry cardamom and cinnamon roles, so these were so refreshing and a welcome departure from past disappointments. I especially loved the texture of the scone. Can’t wait to come back and try their biscuits and gravy for lunch. I really appreciate that they have multiple vegetarian options. This spot is not to be missed.Edit: came back for biscuits and gravy and they were delightful!
September 14 · Shannon MahedyWhat was supposed to be a quick bite before our flight ended up being the last meal of the day. And let me tell you, our last meal did not disappoint. If you're able to see into the future and know that you'll be stuck on your plane for 6 hours...then I would definitely order the matcha and raspberry turnover. My coworker ordered a coffee, turnover and a breakfast sandwich. Now we joke about finding a "last meal" that can match the one we had here whenever we travel for work. I can't wait to visit Minneapolis again to give this cafe another visit! The service was fast and everything was very clean. It was very busy at 10 am on a Wednesday, so you know it's a local favorite. This is truly a great stop on your way to the airport.
August 09 · Lina RakThe biscuit BLT is one of the best & tastiest sandwiches I have had in awhile. Glad I finally stopped by after passing by on my daily commute to work. The atmosphere has a nice vibe and the employees are so nice!
April 25 · ElizabethReally sad this place is closing. The food is phenomenal. You can tell there is so much care and intention going into what’s being offered. Anytime I’m in the Cities, I try to stop in. It’s that good.
August 13 · Felicia MurrellWas able to sneak in Sunday without a wait. There is usually a line, lots of energy in the room and delicious bakery items. Always fresh bread, soups, and hot drinks. However, I always stop in for the biscuit sandwich. The size, flavor and variety of toppings is perfect for brunch. The chai is just sweet and spicy enough. at times overly spicy. I still enough sipping. The room is usually noisy, the cars zoom by on Nicollet Ave and the owner usually working and serving right along with the staff. The bakery is delightful. So many unique flavors and mixtures of textures. From croissants, to cardamom twists, graham crackers, cookies and more. An array of figurines for children to play with while they wait. My mother enjoys their weekly pizza night. I haven't tried the french toast yet, the guest me ordered, and the strawberries looked delicious. Soups and sandwiches; the menu has great variety and something for everyone.A true South Minneapolis community haven.
