The Tod and Maxine McClaskey Culinary Institute at Clark College has been on my list for quite some time. When I saw Navajo Fry Bread Tacos on the menu, I dropped everything to go get some! Lol!Though they were good, they were too fancy for me. I'm used to the traditional kind with beef, beans, lettuce, tomato, olives... the slaw was tasty - it all had good flavor, but the fry bread was tougher than expected. That may be because it was toward the end of the week when we went. That's probably why they were also out of the strawberry eclairs and just about all the bakery item stuff as well. Got to try a piece of raspberry cheesecake (meh, but I'm hard to impress since I am an avid baker and home cook) and Japanese iced coffee (now that was YUMMY). I had to remind myself that these students are just starting out and are learning. We all have to start somewhere. They're doing their best. Will not fault them for it needing improvement as they are learning! I will say they have their fries and hotdog down pat! My son devoured his and only let me try a couple fries. It was fun that they had freeze-dried skittles, too!All-in-all, I'd totally go back here again even if just for the hotdog and fries and Japanese iced coffee! Or their freezer grab and go meals looked good and affordable! It would depend what they had on the menu and what day it is that I could come for anything else though. They really have limited days and hours, but I'm glad I finally got to go. All the staff and chefs were kind, helpful, professional, and efficient. - Crystal Atkinson (Crystal in the Couve)

What is worth choosing the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Culinary Institute over other bakeries and eateries in the Washington area is the unparalleled opportunity to participate in a "true culinary adventure" while supporting local education.

This institution is worth choosing first and foremost for the quality and complexity of the food, which often rivals much higher-priced restaurants. The students, under the guidance of seasoned instructors, strive for excellence, resulting in dishes—from their bakery goods to their main courses—that are "rich, many layered, and absolutely on point." The availability of specialty and complex items, such as the **Japanese Iced Coffee** and unique **Breakfast Sandwiches** like the **Ham Brioche**, provides a sophisticated menu not often found at this price point.

Secondly, the immense value is a major draw. For a relatively inexpensive price, customers receive "great eats" and service that is described as "kind, respectful, and elegant." The money spent directly supports the education of local students in the **Professional Baking and Pastry Arts** and Cuisine Management programs, offering a fulfilling sense of community contribution with every purchase. It’s a place where patrons feel "in on the big secret," fostering a unique friendliness and camaraderie.

Finally, the overall atmosphere and mission are highly commendable. By providing an inclusive and welcoming space—an explicit **Transgender safespace** and **LGBTQ+ friendly** environment—the Institute demonstrates a strong commitment to diversity and respect. For those in Washington who appreciate fresh, high-quality food, value, and the excitement of discovering a local, hidden gem, the Tod and Maxine McClaskey Culinary Institute offers a dining experience that is truly **worth tracking down**.
