Nothing like a Tom Tom Tamale. I lived in this hood and grew up in the neighborhood, during the late 50's into the 60's during MLK induced riots, marches etc, a little history here. It was easy to get a Tom Tom. I always continue to go back where I was raised, even 60 years later. However I do not advise anyone to go to this area and surroundings without knowing the hood. Chicago has literally deteriorated over decades and continues to do so rapidly. It was once a beautiful City, now I call it "Gotham City." Alderman Lopez represents this section of "Gotham City," but like others, he's fighting Brandon Johnson and his allies to bring civilization to the city. - tony karkoska

Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company Introduce

Introduction / Overview

Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company, located at 4750 S Washtenaw Ave in Chicago, IL 60632, is far more than a typical neighborhood bakery; it is a piece of Chicago's unique culinary history. Established in 1937, the company is one of the original and most celebrated manufacturers of the distinctive Chicago-style corn roll tamale. Unlike traditional Mexican tamales wrapped in husks, the Tom Tom tamale is a cylindrical, seasoned beef and cornmeal product that has been a staple of Chicago’s hot dog stands and fast-food culture for decades. It is a nostalgic comfort food, often enjoyed in a "tamale boat" submerged in chili and topped with cheese and onions.

The name "Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company" can be slightly misleading, as the business primarily operates as a bulk food supplier, selling its products to restaurants, vendors, and the public in large quantities. While the company is deeply rooted in the local experience—one long-time patron noted they "always continue to go back where I was raised"—its main focus is on bulk and wholesale items. The menu reflects this purpose, featuring large-volume orders of tamales, beef patties, hot dogs, and gallon-sized condiments.

Patrons who visit the factory direct for a "Quick visit" are typically looking to purchase in bulk. However, the experience of picking up tamales from the source can be a pilgrimage for those wishing to relive "memories" of their childhood in the city. While the product has a deep, nostalgic appeal, it is important to note that a customer who went directly to the factory expressed severe disappointment, reporting that the tamales they purchased were "ALL freezer burned," which serves as a factual warning regarding quality control for direct bulk purchases. Despite this specific negative experience, the Tom Tom tamale remains an enduring fixture in the greater Chicago food landscape.

Location and Accessibility

Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company is situated at 4750 S Washtenaw Ave., Chicago, IL 60632, USA. This location places the company in the industrial and residential area of Chicago’s Southwest Side, near the Archer Heights neighborhood.

The company’s facility functions primarily as a factory or wholesale outlet, not a sit-down cafe. As noted in the public information, the sole service option is Takeout, and the dining option is categorized as a Quick visit. This reinforces that the business is designed for efficiency and bulk purchase fulfillment. While the address is easily located on S Washtenaw Avenue, customers traveling from outside the immediate 60632 area should be aware of the changing nature of the surrounding urban environment, as mentioned in one review that provides a socio-historical context to the neighborhood. For those relying on public transportation, the Orange Line’s Western stop provides an accessible transit option, making it reachable for dedicated Illinois customers.

Features / Highlights

The primary appeal of Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company lies in its historical significance, product identity, and wholesale model.

  • Historic Chicago Staple: The company has been a provider of the distinctive Chicago-style corn roll tamale since 1937, offering a deep sense of local "nostalgic appeal" and tradition for long-time Illinois residents.
  • The Iconic 3.5 oz Tamale: The core product is a beloved fast-food tamale, frequently cited by Chicagoans as a classic comfort food, often consumed "dunked in a tangy green salsa" or in chili.
  • Bulk Wholesale Provider: It serves as a single source for essential food service items, including tamales, hamburgers, all-beef hot dogs, and large condiments, making it convenient for small businesses and event planning.
  • Factory-Direct Experience: For local enthusiasts, visiting the original 60632 location is an experience tied to childhood "memories" and Chicago heritage, offering a direct link to the source of the iconic product.

What is Worth Choosing

Tom Tom Tamale & Bakery Company is worth choosing for Illinois residents who are looking to purchase a piece of genuine Chicago food history in bulk. The tamales are an intrinsic part of the city’s identity, celebrated as a classic, simple pleasure, particularly when prepared in the traditional "tamale boat" with the provided Danielson Chili with Beans. For those planning a large event, a neighborhood cookout, or stocking a small restaurant, the convenience of securing tamales, wholesale pure beef patties, all-beef hot dogs, and large-format condiments from a single, historic supplier in the 60632 area is invaluable.

The main appeal is the powerful sense of nostalgia and the unique flavor of their signature product. However, customers must be aware that the primary service is Takeout and that one customer reported a severe issue with the product quality upon purchasing a bulk minimum order directly from the factory—specifically, "freezer burned" tamales. Therefore, while choosing Tom Tom is a nod to Chicago heritage, customers should approach a direct, non-hot purchase with caution and verify the quality of the frozen goods immediately. It is an essential stop for the historical context and the convenience of bulk food acquisition, but buyers should manage expectations for the experience and inspect their purchases carefully.
