Toscano Brothers Introduce
Welcome to Toscano Brothers, a must-visit destination in San Francisco’s historic North Beach neighborhood that has quickly become a local favorite for its authentic Italian baking traditions and exceptional New York-style bagels. Created by World Pizza Cup Champion Tony Gemignani, Toscano Brothers is more than just a bakery; it’s a revival of the classic, old-school Italian bakeries that were once the heart of the community. In a city already known for its incredible food scene, this spot offers a distinct blend of Italian artisan bread and top-tier, boiled and baked bagels, catering perfectly to the diverse tastes of California food enthusiasts. Whether you’re a long-time resident seeking a nostalgic taste of San Francisco’s Italian heritage or a new visitor looking for a truly authentic bite, Toscano Brothers delivers a warm, friendly, and delicious experience.
Toscano Brothers stands out by embracing the past while perfecting the craft of contemporary baking. The name itself is a tribute to both the bakeries of Gemignani's youth and the "fratelli" (brothers) spirit shared with his artisan flour partners. Every item on the menu is a testament to meticulous preparation, including the use of high-quality ingredients and traditional methods like milling spelt on-site and employing a 40-year-old sourdough starter. The commitment to these details results in a product that is uniquely flavorful and texturally perfect. The fusion of offerings—from the robust, naturally leavened Italian breads to the dense, chewy, classic bagels—makes this bakery a singular spot in the Bay Area. This blend of East Coast tradition and Italian heritage, executed with West Coast artisan flair, is what makes Toscano Brothers a true gem for locals and visitors alike.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing a single item at Toscano Brothers can be a challenge given the breadth of high-quality offerings, but the bakery truly excels in a few signature areas that every California local should experience. The core of their appeal lies in the intersection of Italian heritage baking and perfected bagel-making.
First and foremost, the Gold Standard Baguette and the Sour Cherry, Maldon Salt, Chocolate Bâtard are non-negotiable for bread lovers. The baguette is a genuine San Francisco sourdough, using the aforementioned decades-old starter, delivering a flavor that recalls the city's great bread history. The Sour Cherry Chocolate Bâtard is often cited as a showstopper—a unique blend of salty, sweet, and tangy flavors in an artisan sourdough loaf that perfectly exemplifies the bakery's innovative spirit. Patrons speak of the bread with genuine enthusiasm, often calling the sourdough baguette the “BEST sourdough baguette I’ve ever had in my life.”
Next, the Bagels are a major draw, competing fiercely for the title of the best in San Francisco. Unlike many West Coast counterparts, these are crafted in the classic New York tradition—boiled for a characteristic chewiness. A plain or Everything Bagel paired with the Double Whipped Cream Cheese or the savory Smoked Salmon spread provides a breakfast experience that transports you straight to a classic East Coast deli, right here in North Beach. Customers highly recommend the Asiago Bagel and praise the bagels as “the real thing: naturally leavened, boiled, then baked.”
Finally, don't overlook the pastries, particularly the highly-reviewed Ricotta Cake. This item, along with the Biscotti and rich Budino pudding, offers a sweet end to your visit and a true taste of Italian dessert artistry. As one customer noted, the Ricotta cake is “5 stars+,” and any of their bakery delights are “sure to warm the heart and fill the belly.” Toscano Brothers is worth choosing for the commitment to authentic, quality ingredients and the masterful execution of classic European and New York baking styles, making it a pivotal stop for delicious food in the Bay Area.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I am not sure where Google reviews placed my review, but Toscano Brothers is worth a second review. This bakery is definitely worth a visit. The fresh baguette, bagels, and Ricotta cake is 5 stars+. I always visit when North Beach is on my schedule. Every friend I have invited are now patrons and fans.
June 20 · Eddie ValadezFriendly Italian Bakery on Vallejo StExcellent cappuccino and biscottiAny of their bakery delights are sure to warm the heart and fill the belly. This place does it well, I highly recommend a stop by 🙇🏻♂️☀️
July 26 · G ShishidoLike a little slice of heaven. The bagels are delicious. Tons of other amazing baked goods. Biscotti. Some ridiculous flatbread with rosemary on it that's kind of like a 2 foot long cracker. Plus pretty sure they have the original cash register they used when they opened in the 70s right next to the digital one they used today. Love the nostalgia. Love the taste. Love the outdoor rec seating. Even my kids loved it, which gives it 1 million extra points.
July 05 · Greg GoodmanA piece of old San Francisco on one of the busiest blocks in North Beach. Charming decor right out of the 50’s. Excellent bread with the perfect crunch and the mortadellla sandwich is huge and delicious, as well as their homemade biscotti - great with a single espresso! Of course I had to try the bagels (says the NJ in me). OMG good and perfectly priced. Enjoying a little picnic of everything I bought - so good!
September 06 · C DSuccess!! Total score. Pumpernickel bagels on Saturdays. Fantastic feeling inside. Everyone working is so joyful and you know the good vibes are going into the dough that you’re eating. Loved it!!
