When visiting Uncle Tetsu in San Francisco, the overwhelming consensus and true value of the experience lies in its unique menu and the exceptional quality of its baked goods. While the price point of the main items is around $18.75 for the standard cheesecakes and $31.25 for the Basque varieties, the distinct texture and fresh, high-quality ingredients justify the choice for a special treat.
The Original Cheesecake is the definitive choice for first-time visitors. It provides the pure, unadulterated experience of the Japanese cotton cheesecake—a delicate sweetness and an unforgettable "jiggle" that is a delight for both the eyes and the palate. This melt-in-your-mouth consistency truly sets it apart from traditional Western cheesecakes and is the foundation of Uncle Tetsu's global fame.
For those looking to explore more global flavors, the Ube Cheesecake and the Ube Cheese Tart are highly recommended, often praised by customers for their unique, nutty, and slightly savory flavor profile. As one customer review mentioned, the Ube Cheesecake offers a "nice medley of flavor" that is both "sweet and savory," delivering a pleasant surprise compared to traditional flavors. The yellow (Original) cheese tart is also noted by a customer as "excellent! sweet and a little tarty," making it a perfect handheld option.
The Cheese Tarts ($5.65) are a fantastic, smaller option that still delivers a punch of flavor in a flaky crust, perfect for sampling multiple varieties or for a lighter indulgence.
Ultimately, what makes Uncle Tetsu worth choosing for California dessert enthusiasts is the opportunity to enjoy an internationally acclaimed delicacy, baked fresh daily, that offers a completely different and lighter dessert experience. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I got an ube cheesecake on a total whim and loved it! This cheesecake is a lot airier than normal kinds. Almost like the whipped cream cheese you can get in stores but a little thicker. I love ube and this didn't disappoint. I find it both sweet and savory, which is a nice medley of flavor. Definitely recommend!
August 19 · J GettyTried the cheese tarts- purple (medium sweet), yellow (excellent!) and pink one (too sweet for me). Overall delicious treats but highly recommend the yellow flavor sweet and a little tarty
March 31 · VernieUncle Tetsu's San Francisco location is a slice of cheesecake heaven! Nestled in the heart of the city, this place serves up the fluffiest and most delectable cheesecakes I've ever tasted. From the warm and inviting ambiance to the friendly staff, every visit feels like a special occasion. If you're in SF, don't miss out on this delightful treat!
October 20 · Duke NguyenWe stopped by on our quick visit to San Francisco and we are not disappointed. Tried the original and the Pandan Coconut and while both were deliciously fluffy and amazing on their own, the Pandan coconut was by far the best of the two. We wanted to try all of the flavors but were not sure we could eat enough to fit the left overs in our suitcase, but I wish we had tried. They have several locations, so if you’re close to any check it out and let me know how good they all are.
May 17 · Christopher BennettMy first time ever trying Japanese cheesecake, and I’m so glad I did. This thing was amazing, literally melts in your mouth
