Located centrally in the Northside/Bellevue neighborhood, this local gem is the realization of a long-held dream by owner and professional baker Jonathan Highfield, who brings over 23 years of culinary expertise to every single batch. The dedication is evident in the quality of the product, which is often described as "drool worthy" and "delicious and unique" by Virginia customers who appreciate a superior pastry.
What truly sets this Bakery apart in the highly competitive RVA market is its commitment to authentic, handcrafted processes. This includes utilizing a massive, hand-built wood-fired oven—a feature typically associated with traditional European baking—which imparts a distinctive flavor and crust to their renowned sourdough and specialty loaves. This focus on process extends to their celebrated laminated doughs, with their signature Croissant requiring an intensive three-day labor of love. The result is a selection of breakfast and dessert items that are consistently high-quality, generously portioned, and designed to elevate your daily routine or special occasion. Whether you're a local seeking a Quick visit for a morning bun or a weekend traveler looking for the best artisan bread in Central Virginia, Up All Night Bakery offers a memorable and highly satisfying experience.

Key Features and Menu Highlights:
- The Wood-Fired Sourdough Specialty: A key feature is the mobile, 7,000-pound wood-fired oven. This oven, baked with residual heat from a massive overnight fire, creates the perfectly crusted and flavorful Farmhouse Sourdough and baguettes. This authentic, labor-intensive method sets the bread program apart, appealing directly to Virginia bread aficionados.
- The Three-Day Croissant Process: The bakery's Croissants are a "true labor of love," requiring a rigorous three-day preparation process. This commitment to lamination and fermentation results in pastries—like the classic Pain Au Chocolat, Morning Bun, and Croissant Cinnamon Roll—that are exceptionally light, flaky, and rich. The savory Virginia Ham And Swiss is a particular customer favorite.
- Creative and Unique Flavor Profiles: The bakery expertly blends the classic with the unexpected. Unique offerings include the savory and regionally inspired Pimento Cheese Bread, and creative cookie flavors like Brown Butter Sourdough, Cherry Limeade, and Zucchini Bread Cookie, which capture a fun, seasonal sensibility. The popular Everything Croissant is another innovative savory staple.
- Generous, Jumbo Portions: Customers frequently comment on the portion sizes, noting that items are often "jumbo sized." This combination of high quality and generous portioning ensures excellent value and satisfaction for the Virginia customer.
- Savory Treats and Lunch Options: Beyond sweets, the menu includes satisfying savory choices like specialty scones (e.g., Dill + Cheddar) and the rich Onion Ortiz (likely a savory croissant or bread), making it an excellent stop for light lunch or mid-day snacks.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Super cute hidden bakery, the pastries were delicious and unique! Only wish they had been warmed up! Price was also good for the portion sizes. Definitely would check it out another time. Keep in mind, there is no specialty coffee sold! Just a small station to make your own cup.
May 08 · Eva DelgadoDrool worthy pastries in a wide variety of deliciousness. This is a small pick up shop with a few tables out front. The orange iced swirl was dynamite great. The fruit pastry was delicious. I have an earl grey scone tucked in my freezer which sounded very interesting. It’s nice that items are jumbo sized as you definitely want more. I’m glad I live in Charlottesville because I would be putting on some poundage if it was! A special treat when I’m out that way!
June 20 · R EnglishSo glad I found this place! Cute street with shops. I got the Focaccia (rosemary and sea salt) it is so soft! A chocolate chip cookie and the white sour dough. Got it cut up and will freeze some to make sure it doesn’t go bad before I use it.
April 12 · Lead SmartDelicious. So hard to choose from the many sweet and savory varieties of pastries that I ended up with one savory each and three sweet pastries. The cinnamon roll was different, delicious, but of a flakier dough. Hard to describe so you'll just have to have one yourself. The sweet ones were eaten over two days to leisurely enjoy them. Lucky are you all who live in the vicinity of this wonderful bakery. This is a wonderful bakery, not a coffee shop, as the coffee was in a pump dispenser and was good but not great.
October 21 · Jeanette RodgersCute little Bakery serving incredible croissant based baked goodies!! The Earl Grey scones are so good you want to sit down and have a tea party. Everything I tried here was wonderful. The counter service lady was sweet, didn't rush you into placing your order and was prepared to answer any questions. Definitely worth the drive from DC.
