Woodblock Chocolate Introduce
For Oregonians with a discerning palate, Woodblock Chocolate has long been synonymous with the pinnacle of American craft chocolate. As Portland's original bean-to-bar chocolate manufactory, the family-run business—founded by husband and wife team Charley and Jessica Wheelock—has earned a reputation for producing high-quality, single-origin chocolate with just two ingredients: cacao and pure cane sugar. This rigorous, artistic, and patient process, which they’ve proudly pursued since 2010, has established Woodblock as a cornerstone of the Pacific Northwest’s artisan food scene.
However, the experience at their beautiful NE Portland location has recently become even richer. Now, the space is not merely a chocolate shop and cafe but a dual-concept destination, functioning as an exceptional bakery as well. The addition of a skilled veteran baker and team brings an array of fresh, high-quality pastries and savory goods that flawlessly complement Woodblock’s robust chocolate and coffee offerings. This combination creates a truly unique and compelling local establishment.
The atmosphere itself is as thoughtfully crafted as the chocolate. Situated in a “splendiferous and comfy” manufactory/cafe, Woodblock is a welcoming small business that actively supports community and inclusivity, identifying as both LGBTQ+ friendly and a Transgender safespace. Visitors are invited to relax, enjoy the artisanal chocolate, world-class espresso, and scratch-made baked goods, all while perhaps catching a peek at the intricate bean-to-bar process happening right behind a glass wall. This unique fusion of an active craft chocolate factory and a cozy, top-tier bakery is what makes Woodblock Chocolate a must-visit Oregon gem.

- Portland’s Original Bean-to-Bar Chocolate Maker: The foundational feature is the Manufactory itself. The business meticulously handles every step of the chocolate-making process—from sourcing high-quality cacao beans and roasting them in antique drum roasters to refining, conching, aging, and hand-wrapping the final bars. This control ensures the complex, pure flavors lauded by critics and customers.
- The Unforgettable Bran Muffin: The bakery aspect has quickly gained a devoted following. One international reviewer declared the bran muffin to be "hands down the best I’ve ever had," praising its perfect balance and flavor, a testament to the bakery team's skill.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I come from Canada, where I lived in the French province and also had the chance to visit France a few times. Over the years, I’ve tried to find shops that make their own chocolate, but honestly, it’s not an easy art, and many times I’ve left a bit disappointed. But not this time—Woodblock is truly something special! Their chocolates are absolutely delicious—smooth, creamy, and bursting with fruity, complex flavors that feel like a little piece of heaven in every bite.Since it’s also a bakery, I couldn’t resist trying a bran muffin, and let me tell you, it was hands down the best I’ve ever had—perfectly balanced, flavorful, and so tasty that I’m still thinking about it.The service made the experience even better. The lady who helped me was so kind. At one point, I needed to use the washroom, but my dog was waiting outside. Without hesitation, she stepped out to keep my dog company while I was away—that kind of thoughtful gesture really touched me.I can’t wait to come back tomorrow and explore more of the incredible treats this amazing place has to offer. Woodblock is a gem, and I’m so happy I found it!
September 12 · Salvador ValdesAwesome new bakery in NE. I highly recommend the savory scone. Gotta try the pesto roll too. Great espresso and coffee. All of this AND there’s a chocolate factory/retail operation at the same time!Walk, run, and roll to the new Woodblock Bakery!
August 26 · Tom PowersI rarely order scones because they tend to be disappointing. Not here. There were warm. Had a fantastic texture. I’d say the best I’ve had in portland - by far. I also had their cinnamon rolls- pretty dang good! Great coffee, real Housemade baked goods and a very nice atmosphere.
September 04 · Jim DwyerRevised: Still amazing drinking chocolate and the new bakery items are delicious as well.Wonderful drinking chocolate and Bakeshop pastries.
August 07 · SproutI wanted to let the owners know how significant May May is to Woodblock. I had never been in and her wonderful, motivated, and clearly effort driven customer service has made me repeatedly come back as my new local spot. She is truly valuable to Woodblock and you should give her a raise and do everything you can to keep her. I have met friendly baristas before but never ones that are outwardly thoughtful about their work and have intimate knowledge with the food and drinks for sale.
