Abbate Bakery Introduce
For residents of Central New Jersey, the name Abbate Bakery is synonymous with authentic Italian baking and decades of culinary tradition. Originally founded by the Abbate family in Brooklyn, New York, in 1976, this beloved bakery relocated its cherished family recipes to Matawan in 2000, quickly establishing itself as a cornerstone of the local community. Abbate Bakery is more than just a place to buy sweets; it is an institution dedicated to preserving the quality and flavor of classic Italian pastries and transforming special occasions with beautifully crafted cakes. The deep-rooted heritage, tracing back to the Abbate family's origins in Cinisi, Sicily, ensures that every cannoli, sfogliatelle, and custom cake is made with a traditional touch that is increasingly rare to find.
The core philosophy of Abbate Bakery is built on two pillars: consistency and tradition. They use original family recipes passed down through generations, which guarantees that the taste of their products remains authentic and comforting. This dedication to traditional methods is particularly evident in their robust selection of Italian pastries, cookies, and artisanal breads. For New Jersey locals planning a major celebration—from weddings and bridal showers to birthdays and anniversaries—Abbate Bakery is a highly recommended resource. Their expertise in custom cakes, particularly their highly praised cannoli cake, has earned them a loyal following, with customers frequently commending the bakery's ability to perfectly execute both complex designs and incredible flavors.
The bakery’s extensive menu caters to both those seeking an everyday indulgence and those requiring a centerpiece dessert. On any given day, customers can find everything from a simple but delicious croissant or donut for a morning treat, to an elaborate, multi-layered custom cake designed to serve dozens. This versatility makes Abbate Bakery a one-stop-shop for all things sweet and even some savory, like their popular Prosciutto Bread. They have adapted to modern customer needs by offering easy online ordering for pickup, though for same-day or highly customized orders, a friendly call to the shop is always recommended, ensuring that the staff can personally assist in bringing every vision to life.
The shop itself, located on Main Street in Matawan, serves as a beacon of deliciousness in Monmouth County. It has successfully created an environment where customers feel like friends and family, a direct reflection of the Abbate family’s gratitude for the local support that has allowed their business to thrive in New Jersey for over two decades. Whether you are craving a slice of New York-style cheesecake, a delicate seven-layer rainbow cookie, or an Italian cream-filled pastry, Abbate Bakery promises to deliver a sweet experience that truly lives up to their goal: "a sweet experience, with love at first bite."

July 23 · Q BeachWe ordered desserts from Abbate for several events, and they never disappoint! The cake flavors and cake design are both incredible! Highly recommend.
May 06 · Varuni BewtraExcellent Italian American bakery with all the classic favorites. The eclair had the best custard cream I have ever had, brownies are excellent and did not yet try the Napoleon or lobster tail. Italian bread had great hard crust the way it should and makes a great Italian sandwich. I found this bakery because I was looking for a place to buy some pastries to bring to a friends house as I was coming from a distance in south Jersey. They were so good I decided to stop again on the way home and bring an assortment of pastries for back home. Really loved this place, it reminded me of the great bakeries of Long Island and Brooklyn of the 70s and 80s.
August 27 · Thomas TOver the past few years, I have gotten a few special occasion cakes from Abbate Bakery and each one has been a work of art that is equally delicious. The most recent was my wedding cake, which was absolute breathtaking. I came to Abbate Bakery with a few ideas with reference photos and Lindsay pulled the elements together to make my vision a reality. She helped advise my husband and I on what would work best and also helped us to decide what flavors would be best for the occasion. Our guests had nothing but great things to say.In comparing all of the cakes I've gotten, it's clear that there is true talent at this bakery and a passion for creating top-quality desserts. Abbate Bakery truly delivers on what its customers want and will go the extra mile for them, which, in my book, makes them stand out from others I have gone to. The best part of this bakery is the level of professionalism and the feeling of talking to a friend. I highly recommend!
February 22 · Danielle ShafferyOk, so I ordered my sister a custom cake for her 40th bday. I live in California and I sent them a photo and had a phone consultation regarding the cake and flavors I wanted in the cake.I was excited to see how it turned out. I wanted a simple, rustic, feminine looking cake. I did not want a traditional looking cake plastered in old school icing. I also wanted a cake that was light with fruit inside. My sister never got to have a wedding cake and recently divorced, so I wanted this cake to be very special. The cake was a huge hit. People at the party asked where I got the cake. My sister, who generally doesn't eat sweets, wanted another piece.I also ordered some pastries and couldn't believe how good they were. I was like, this place is like an old-school Italian bakery from NYC... I did some research, and I found out they were in Brooklyn since 1976, and in 2000, they moved to Matawan, NJ. How lucky are we!!Now, every time I come to NJ to visit my family, I will be stuffing my face with their Canolli's and lobster tails!!!Thank you for making my sister's special day even more special. She and her friends are still talking about the cake.
