Amy's Bread Introduce
Since its doors first opened in 1992, Amy's Bread has become an institution in the heart of New York City. The original location on Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen has been a neighborhood staple for over three decades, pioneering the artisan baking movement in the city. More than just a place to grab a loaf of bread, Amy's Bread is a vibrant community hub that offers a genuine taste of old-world baking traditions with a friendly, local spirit. The bakery has a fascinating history, having been founded in a building that housed a fish market since 1896. This history is reflected in its charming, old-world aesthetic, with iron racks filled with freshly baked goods and a marble counter piled high with treats.
Amy Scherber, the founder, along with her husband, Troy Rohne, has built a business committed to quality and community. They take pride in using traditional baking methods and high-quality, natural ingredients, ensuring that every product is as wholesome as it is delicious. The bakery's mission is to nourish the bodies, minds, and spirits of the communities it serves—from its loyal customers to its dedicated employees. Amy's Bread is a testament to the power of "slow food" and a truly local business. It's a place where every loaf is shaped by hand and every pastry is crafted with care, right here in NYC.
In addition to its famous Hell's Kitchen location, Amy's Bread has expanded its presence across the city, bringing its celebrated baked goods to more New Yorkers. This includes cafes within the New York Public Library system at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library and the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. These new locations allow patrons to enjoy a coffee and pastry with incredible views, further cementing Amy's Bread as a cherished part of the city's cultural landscape.
The flagship Amy's Bread bakery is a beloved fixture of the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood. Its address is 672 9th Ave, New York, NY 10036, USA. This prime location places it right in the heart of the Midtown West area, making it an ideal stop for locals and visitors alike. Situated between 46th and 47th Streets, it's easily accessible whether you're heading to a Broadway show, walking through the neighborhood, or simply commuting.
For those traveling by public transportation, the bakery is conveniently located near several major subway lines. The A, C, E trains at 42nd Street–Port Authority Bus Terminal are just a short walk away, as are the 1, 2, 3, 7, N, Q, R, W, and S trains at Times Sq–42nd Street. The proximity to the Lincoln Tunnel also makes it a convenient stop for those driving in and out of the city. While the narrow storefront might seem unassuming, its location in this bustling neighborhood makes it an accessible oasis for anyone looking for fresh, quality baked goods.
The bakery's historic storefront, with its old wood and carved trim, stands out on the avenue and invites you in with the irresistible smell of fresh-baked bread and sweets. Inside, the space is cozy, offering seating in the back for those who want to linger over a coffee and a pastry. It's an ideal spot to sit down, relax, and watch the city go by from the comfort of a charming, old-world cafe.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This place had the friendliest service. The older gentleman behind the counter was so nice, answered all my questions, and even let us wash our hands behind the bar. The pistachio croissant was amazing, the bagel was great, and the cinnamon challah bread was delicious. The muffin was solid, and the banana cake was like a super moist banana bread. We bought some sourdough to go, and he even threw in a couple of baguettes for us! It's a really cute little bakery with plenty of seating in the back. Oh, and the sticky bun was heavenly.
July 13 · Reid RobertsI visited Amy’s Bread around 9:00 am and loved how peaceful it was with no crowd at that time. I ordered a coffee and their pistachio croissant braid, and both were absolutely delicious! The bakery had a cozy and quiet atmosphere, making it a perfect spot to start the day.
January 16 · Amy DominguezAmy's Bread is within the Chelsea Market (see photos), on 9th Avenue between 15th and 16th Streets. Taxis are easily accessible from there to get you to your next destination. I had the banana cake ($7.08 including tax) which, as a whole, was very good. The flavor of the cake had a pleasing banana taste (as it should), while the white frosting, which was tasty, did not enhance the cake because its pleasing flavor was strong and blocked out the flavor of the cake when the two were together on the fork. The few nuts on top of it had no taste.A few weeks later I tried their butterscotch cashew bar, pictured ($5.00). The butterscotch flavor was strong and pleasing, but there was almost no contrast of flavor with the cashews because most of them had no recognizable flavor, as was with the nuts on the banana cake mentioned above.I tried their Hell's Kitchen bakery (9th Avenue at about 47th Street), on February 28th, 2025, it was very disappointing. Their sticky bun WAS, many years ago, considered to be one of the best. NOW, I think that it is one of the poorest versions. The sticky and tasty flavor was only on the top of the bun, the rest was close to flavorless. Their tuna sandwich on that day was the most unrecognizably flavored tuna sandwich I have ever had (rate it 0).
March 03 · Harvey MessingHonestly my favorite bakery in the city. Their chocolate cake is unbeatable. Also the bread is awesome. Really, you can’t go wrong here at all.
March 04 · Ann SteinI first came here in 2022 on a trip and I dreamed of the cranberry orange muffin I ate everyday after since. This time around, happy to be back, I tried an apple crumble muffin and it was divine. My friend had a pistachio twist which was rated a 10/10. This place does not disappoint and is worth the try/hype.
