Atuvava Bakery Introduce
Introduction / Overview
For individuals in Minnesota navigating gluten sensitivities, Celiac disease, or simply seeking high-quality, delicious baked goods without compromising on flavor or texture, Atuvava Bakery has quickly become a beloved and essential destination. Located in Minneapolis, this women-owned business has built a dedicated following by achieving what many thought impossible: creating truly exceptional gluten-free (GF) bread and pastries that stand toe-to-toe with their traditional counterparts. The word 'Atuvava,' coined by the owner's daughter, simply means 'Would you like some food?' or 'Can I have some food?,' perfectly encapsulating the spirit of generosity and quality that defines this neighborhood gem.
The bakery was founded out of a personal necessity when both the owner, Alex Ellison, and her daughter were diagnosed with Celiac disease. This personal mission drove a decade of experimentation and dedication to "crack the GF code," resulting in products that routinely earn the highest praise from local customers—many of whom dare to call it the 'BEST gluten free bakery in Minnesota.' Atuvava is a dedicated gluten-free facility, meaning those with severe allergies or Celiac disease can shop with absolute confidence. The bakery offers a surprisingly wide array of options, from artisan-style breads that are not 'gummy or crumbly' to a full case of sweet treats like brownies, muffins, and cinnamon rolls that taste like the 'real' thing. They pride themselves on using fresh, high-quality ingredients, including cage-free eggs from the owners' own chickens, underscoring a commitment to excellence that is evident in every bite. This is not just a GF bakery; it is simply a great bakery.
Location and Accessibility
Atuvava Bakery is conveniently situated within the welcoming Standish neighborhood of South Minneapolis, making it a focal point for the local community and accessible for visitors from across the Twin Cities. The bakery's address is 3800 S 28th Ave, Minneapolis, MN 55406, USA, a location that offers easy navigation and access in a classic, cozy neighborhood setting.
The neighborhood setting ensures that accessibility is straightforward for local users. For patrons driving in, the location offers the practical advantage of free street parking, easing the stress of a quick pick-up, particularly given the bakery's popularity and tendency to sell out of high-demand items like their baguettes. While the bakery currently focuses on a takeout model and quick visits, the friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere create a pleasant, efficient experience for every customer. Customers can also conveniently pay using modern methods, including credit cards, debit cards, and NFC mobile payments.
Services Offered
Atuvava Bakery provides a focused menu of services centered around high-quality, scratch-made, and 100% dedicated gluten-free baking:
- Dedicated Gluten-Free Production: Every single item produced and sold in the bakery is 100% gluten-free, providing a safe environment for all customers with dietary restrictions.
- Takeout Service: The primary model of service is quick and friendly takeout, allowing customers to easily purchase their favorite fresh-baked items to enjoy at home.
- Artisan Bread Offerings: They specialize in various rustic loaves and breads, including the highly popular baguettes (often subject to a purchase limit due to demand) and their signature Rustic Loaf, which is often likened to traditional bakery bread.
- Wide Pastry and Treat Selection: The case is consistently stocked with a rotating, but diverse, selection of individual treats, including Cinnamon Rolls, Brownies, Muffins, Cookies, Turnovers, and Fruit Danishes.
- Beverage Selection: To complement the baked goods, the bakery offers Coffee, along with specialty cold drinks such as Kombucha, Jinx Tea, San Pellegrino, La Croix, and Bottled Soda.
- Customer Sampling: The staff frequently offers samples on top of the case—a great opportunity, particularly for first-time visitors, to try their amazing gluten-free products like the lauded brownie.
Features / Highlights
Atuvava Bakery stands out in the competitive Twin Cities food scene for several key differentiating features, driven by its quality and customer-first approach:
- Best-in-Class Gluten-Free Bread: The bakery is locally famous for its artisan-style breads. The baguettes are described as "EVERYTHING," featuring the crusty exterior and soft, perfect interior that is often missing in GF baking. The Rustic Loaf is a local favorite for everyday 'regular bread.' The quality is so high that customers note it's better eaten quickly before it even has a chance to go stale.
- Woman-Owned Business: The bakery proudly identifies as a woman-owned business, adding a layer of community support and local pride for patrons.
- Commitment to Fresh, High-Quality Ingredients: The dedication to quality is evident in their sourcing, with reports that the owners raise chickens to ensure the use of fresh, cage-free eggs in their products.
- Authentic Pastry Flavor: Products like their Cinnamon Rolls are noted to "go toe to toe with normal ones," effectively removing the feeling that a GF treat is a "consolation prize" and proving that gluten-free can be genuinely delicious.
- Welcoming and Friendly Staff: Despite often being busy, the staff is consistently praised by customers for being "very welcoming and friendly," "kind and patient," and often well-informed about ingredients and allergies, which significantly enhances the overall experience.
- Reasonably Priced for Quality GF: Customers frequently note that the bakery offers its high-quality, specialty gluten-free items at reasonable prices, a refreshing value proposition in the gluten-free market.

What is Worth Choosing
Choosing Atuvava Bakery is a choice for uncompromising quality and a uniquely Minnesotan experience within the realm of specialty baking. It is worth choosing for three primary reasons that set it apart, especially for those with gluten dietary needs:
Firstly, the product quality is arguably the best in the region. The baker's personal ten-year journey to perfect gluten-free recipes has culminated in baguettes, rustic loaves, and pastries that successfully mimic, or even surpass, the texture and flavor of traditional baked goods. This is a crucial distinction for customers who have been routinely disappointed by dry or crumbly GF alternatives; Atuvava delivers breads that are springy and crusty.
Secondly, the peace of mind offered by a fully dedicated gluten-free facility is invaluable. For Celiac customers, being able to select freely from a fully stocked case of items—ranging from savory pasties to sweet turnovers—without fear of cross-contamination is a game-changer. Coupled with the use of fresh, cage-free ingredients, this bakery prioritizes health and quality from the ground up.
Finally, the entire experience, from the friendly, patient staff to the opportunity to try free samples, makes a visit enjoyable. While their hours are currently limited (typically Wednesday through Saturday afternoons, so plan accordingly!), the commitment of this women-owned local business to raising the bar for gluten-free food in the Twin Cities makes every trip to the Standish neighborhood worthwhile. For anyone who has missed the taste of 'real' bread or a satisfying cinnamon roll, Atuvava Bakery is the place to rediscover those simple, delicious joys.

It was AMAZING!!!I found out the owners raise chickens so even the ingredients are cage free and fresh!!!Come try out this Bakery!!Hours are listed in pictures below!!The staff are very welcoming and friendly.I was surprised to see a young lady I knew years ago working in this bakery. I went to this bakery to check it out with her aunt. She is amazing young lady!It was busy in this Bakery, so due to privacy I chose not to take pictures from inside of the Bakery. But I do have some pictures of items from the Bakery!
February 14 · Michelle SummersThis is, dare I say, the BEST gluten free bakery in Minnesota. Reasonably priced, especially for gluten free. The baguettes are EVERYTHING - there's a reason they put a purchase limit on them! Their rustic loaf is my go to for "regular bread". It's reminiscent of the bakery bread I'd get as a kid visiting my grandmother. Their bread is not loaded with preservatives so it will not stay fresh for whatever outrageous amount of time store bought bread is good for. Lucky for everyone, their bread is so good it'll be eaten before it goes stale. I usually get two baguettes because I'll eat one in the car on the way home. Love the danishes. I'm not personally a muffin or scone person but they always have them available. I do love their buns. They have a good variety of items to choose from in their case. Staff is always kind and patient.
July 15 · Mary M.Whether you need to avoid gluten or not, this bakery is AMAZING. But if you are gluten free or celiac and you’re looking for a place where you can finally feel “normal”, this place is your new best friend! The baguettes and bread are absolutely out of this world! They are everything you want from a European style bread! Light and fluffy with a delicious crunchy crust. Toasted or fresh out of the oven, I still have to remind myself that it’s gluten free. We’ve done everything with this bread, from using a baguette to make “pizza bread” to making the most amazing French toast. They have a wide variety of additional treats and desserts too. Food memories are powerfully things. I swear when I first tasted one of their current scones, I almost cried! Their cinnamon rolls will bring you right back to your childhood. And the pastries are amazing, no matter what the flavor of the day is. I’ve been following them since they were a little front porch bakery, and there’s a reason why they have such a following. This is one bakery you don’t want to miss out on!
June 19 · Ashley StillwellThis place is absolutely amazing. I’ve tried many local bakeries that are dedicated gluten free and nothing compares to this place. Photo of a strawberry cheese danish and the rustic loaf. Soooooo good! Hours have continued to expand to allow more availability! This place is everything you could hope for!
August 01 · Ericka ReilWalking in off the street I genuinely gasped when I realized *all* the offerings on the menu board were gluten-free -- I'm a newcomer to dietary restrictions (gluten-free/dairy-free) and it's been a tough journey but I love this place and I'm excited to come back again. The staff were really well-informed about food allergies/finding options that met my specific needs, and it's got a great classic neighborhood bakery feel. The muffins are wonderful but the baguettes are really next level good.
