Ben's Bread Co. Introduce
For Washington residents seeking the very best in artisan baking, **Ben's Bread Co.** in Seattle's Phinney Ridge neighborhood stands as a true destination. Far from a conventional bakery, this establishment is recognized as a leader in the movement toward hyper-local and naturally leavened breads, offering a depth of flavor and commitment to quality that has earned it significant local and national acclaim, including a **James Beard Foundation Award Semifinalist nomination** for its outstanding work.
Ben's Bread Co. started as a passionate sourdough pop-up and has since evolved into a full-service café and bakery, focusing on creating breads and pastries that reflect the diverse terroir of Washington state. Central to their mission is the exclusive use of **local grains**, working directly with farmers and millers like Cairnspring Mills to ensure the highest quality ingredients in every loaf. This dedication produces a product that is not just fresh, but deeply flavorful and texturally complex.
The menu is expansive, catering to all times of day. While the selection of sourdough loaves—such as the staple **Table Bread** and creative daily specials like the **Benne Miso Scallion** or **Caraway Rye**—forms the heart of their offering, the prepared food program is equally impressive. Patrons can enjoy everything from gourmet breakfast and lunch options, including the highly-praised **Fancy Breakfast Sandwich** and a delicious **Daily Sandwich** (like the fabulous Tuna Sandwich noted by customers), to an array of fine pastries.
One of the bakery’s most celebrated signature items is the **English Muffin**. Customers affectionately describe them as "the best version of an adult, savory donut," praising their dense, chewy texture and subtle, well-seasoned flavor that makes them "infinitely adaptable." The commitment to innovation extends to their popular weekly **PiZZA FRiENDS** event, where they transform into a specialized pizzeria, showcasing their flavorful dough in a new light. This blend of artisan baking, specialty coffee, full-service dining options, and community engagement solidifies Ben's Bread Co.'s reputation as a vital and essential part of Washington's culinary scene.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I'm in love. Funny how love sometimes comes when you least expect it...I didn't know Ben's was here, decided to try it and well, now we have a relationship...The English Muffins...I am a fanatic for them and apparently they are one of their signature items. They're like the best version of an adult, savory donut: chewy, with a subtle flavor imbued by well seasoned pans and infinitely adaptable... You could combine these dense muffins with any topping. They're so good, I eat them plain.I tried the Tuna Sandwich yesterday and it was fabulous. While consisting of quality ingredients and an elevated preparation, also evokes the best tuna sandwiches you had in your lunch or at a diner.Excellent coffee and a truly kind staff...I left my debit card and they held it for me. Highly recommend.
August 20 · j spain GreeneThey make pizza one day a week, and it’s definitely worth going for. The ingredients used on the pizza are top quality and delicious. The dough is flavorful and perfectly baked. It holds the generous, incredibly tasty toppings beautifully—so much so that you can eat it with one hand without the slice folding. The place is located in a covered passage. Those who arrive early get to sit down and enjoy their pizza. Right next to it, there’s an excellent wine shop that sells and serves natural wines. Both the prices and the wines themselves are great. If you’d like to enjoy your pizza with wine, you need to sit at the wine shop’s tables when ordering the pizza—only then can they serve you wine.We had a wonderful evening in this passage where high-quality places come together. Highly recommended to everyone.
May 22 · Bülent EjderWhen I got here, I was a little bit surprised that there was no line, as I kind of expected one. It was on a weekend, but slightly after the normal lunch hour.Since I've heard a lot of things, I decided to try a bunch of things. I got the fancy breakfast sandwich, english muffin with sourdough, cinnamon twist, and a salted caramel cookieStarting with the breakfast sandwich, it was good, but I was expecting better. The brioche buns were quite nice on the outsides - they were toasted very well and super soft. Also, the souffled egg tasted great. However, the rest of the stuff was just kind of average. The cheese was essentially nonexistent - if I didn't know the description of the item beforehand I would've assumed that it was just a sausage & egg sandwich with no cheese involved. Also, the sausage just tasted like your average breakfast sandwich sausage you can find at like McDonald'sThe english muffin was a bit better, but not that much so. Obviously, salted butter makes everything taste better, so that was nice. The outside was pretty crispy as well, but I did find the muffin to be quite chewy - to the point where it was annoying to eat. The jam also wasn't amazing either - I ended up not using the majority of it.The inside was really fluffy and nice though.Moving onto the desserts, my favorite of these was the salted caramel cookie, as it was well salted, had a good crunch to it, and was well-baked. The inside was not really gooey at all, but the chocolate was still nicely melted. On the contrary, the cinnamon twist was actively bad. It felt stale, cold, and eating it gave me basically no enjoyment at allThe total for these 4 items came out to around 30 dollars, which is kind of a lot. I think each of these items are either slightly or a good amount overpriced, with the donut probably being the worst of these, with the english muffin being the most reasonableOverall, I see hints of the high quality I've heard about, but it's not enough to make me come back here. 7/10
May 31 · JamesFood: definitely on the dessert side. They do sell savory breakfast sandwiches but never been in on time to order since they close the kitchen down around 2pm. Got the olive oil cake (whipped cream and lemon curd) and the citrus danish with cream cheese. It was bright but likely too sweet for the morning/after for me.Atmosphere: open kitchen, small, cramped, limited seating but plenty of outside space. I’m sure beautiful when sunny and warm.Service: quick, direct, neutral.Would come again knowing it’s for a sweet tooth craving and seeing what’s rotating in the display case.
February 02 · Cape GrapeStumbled across Ben's Bread Co. while running some errands. The bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwich was fantastic (the sourdough English muffin is perfect), and I loaded up a box of pastries too which were also great. Looking forward to coming back to sample more items (like the blue corn cookie) and the coffee!
